Twilight sweeping sprays,
clean days haze.
Children spin in harmony,
elevating all who witness.
Towards the Universal Law,

Dear Paulo! I’ve just read your new book “Witch from
Portobello”. Your book impressed me. I feel that I understand better a lot of features of women’s moods. Your book teaches us to love, to be loved. I met one girl, and I feel her soul. Please create more and more perfect books.

There were many things that intrigued me about this book. The two that I would like to metnion here are:
I felt dissatisfied by Athena’s relationship with her son. I think I would have liked to know her experience of her son and the relationship she had and tried to nurture with him. Of all the relationships within the book I felt a gap in not knowing her (Athena’s) position. A mother/son relationship is complicated especially within male dominated culture and in this case within the context of Church inspired conservatism and such a lack of compassion. Her relationship with ehr son could sit outside of this…I wonder of his impact on her and vice versa.

Aswell, I really enjoyed that Atena’s boyfriend was someone who engaged with different ideas than her – this spoke to her strength and self understanding as well as the value that difference (when it does not impinge on others like the Church in the book for example) can have in this world.

Hi Mr. Coelho,

I’ve been a fan of yours ever since I read “The Alchemist”, followed by “Eleven Minutes”, “By The River Piedra…”, “Veronika Decidess to die”, “Manual of the Warrior of Light” and just recently “The Witch of Portobello” I was surprised to find it in a bookstore here in SIngapore since I know it will only be released in a few countries. I love the book so much. It was one of the best books I’ve ever read in my whole life and believe me I’ve read a lot. Not only did it catch my attention from the very beggining it also made me hold on til the end of it. It opened my eyes to a lot of things… things that I never knew I actually felt or thought of before… or maybe they were always there but I was just afraid… things that I already know the answer to but was just asking the wrong questions… or just too scared to accept it… Others may say it’s not the best book of yours but I’ve seen beyond it… the message it was trying to convey and I felt it. Thanks for a wonderful book…

Cheers!

Hi there, i just read your comment and being a lebanese muslim growing up in Sydney. Your words have relinquished my actual thoughts regarding the balance between faith and a peaceful soul. Perhaps you share the true instinct of spiritual kindness, that has been rejected by other muslims. When truly, it is the path to finding happiness in life..

All the best

I wanted to dance and go to trance with her and in her presence. I wanted to hold her child and look into her eyes.

It is a shame how a great work like this may lose it’s appeal due to the medium in which it is transported. I have just read the first chapter of Arabic translation and must say that it does not have the feeling nor does it convey the images that I have obtained from the English translation.

Arabic is a beautiful language rich and full of ways into which all of Paulo’s images, feeling and soul searching can fit in most luxurious yet simple of ways.

I suggest that a work like this is always entrusted with those who consider translation a work of art and creation in it self not a mere technical work.

Hi Paulo,
Not sure if you will read this, but I just wanted to say thank you for all your words of wisdom. I have read every book that I can get my hands on written by yourself, and the day that I spotted your new book in a magazine I was beside myself with excitement. Each book, makes me think about my lifes journey and how I got here, each time I experience the highs and lows as I read, where I relate them to my journey. The Witch of Portobello made me think alot about my blank spaces in my life….and how we tend to cover them up rather than look too deep in whats missing. I miss my mum very much, and I know that I need to do something about it, its just finding the strength to do something that might heal our pain. Your work is an inspiration to me and I am sure to many others, I just wanted to say thank you.

Hi Mr Coelho,

I have read many of your beautiful books and have learnt so much from your knowledge and wisdom. Although I have great respect for all your last novels, it took a long time for me to be interested in reading “The Alchemist”, maybe because I didn’t know what an Alchemist was! Then I finally realised, because it is advertised on every one of your books and gave you much popularity, I thought I should read it. Since then I have read it, and I admire your work immensely. Now I understand it’s popularity. Your new book. “The Witch of Portobello” is intriguing. Athena sounds just like my life story. Not quite like that, only when she started meeting her mentors in her life. I have had many beautiful mentors in my life, but just left me when I needed them most. I believe now that they probably thought I were starting to rely on them too much, and it was not in my best interest to continue. It was so hard at the time, but it made me stronger and more determined to become the person that they thought I would become, (or that I was already, but didn’t realise yet}. That was the hardest part of my life. I am 53 years of age now and I met them when I was 40. I divorsed my husband, who now is my best friend. I love my children, but we have learnt so much from my being a sole parent. I am able to pursue my reading and trying to find my purpose in life and still bring up my children in wisdom that they do not understand yet, but my legacy is to leave all my books, especially yours in my library for my childrens kids, and their kids.

Dear Paulo,

I am enchanted by the fact that you have produced such a wonderful book. I’m enchanted by the story. What I find especially awe-inspiring is the fact you present the idea of The Mother as well as God, and that there’s no need to dismiss worship of the Mother as paganism or Satanism. It is about a return to the soul, where God is, so what can be wrong with that! Perhaps a balance will be restored all the sooner for this book.

This is the fourth book of yours I have read and I love your work. I am an English actress and a writer currently travelling Spain. In June I will begin El Camino de Santiago. I’ve given up just about everything I had and knew because it meant nothing, and now I’m going where I’m guided, come what may. I cannot live any other way.

Your books are words of comfort to me in moments of doubt, as well as moments of absolution.

Thank you.

hi!! paulo

i dont know where to start…three years ago,i was as lost as time…i was so confused about what the path im on…and the one that im really sent down here to take…and im not gonna say here “the thing that perhaps im supposed to do…” im gonna say “the thing im sure i must do…” for due to your last novel speaking of Athena…i learned to BELIEVE…with all my heart…

It all started with the “the Alchemist”….which set my mind and heart on the track that im really up for…then it was “Like the flowing river”…that really modified my belief to so many issues concerning my life…then i went in search for a better understanding…and as a coincidence…i got a copy of “eleven minutes”…that really touched my heart so deeply…and made me realise things in a different way…totally new!!!

the strange beautiful thing concerning your books…yet really brings sadness to my heart…is you cant stop reading the book…till you finish it…and i dont remember that i spent more than a week…reading any of your books for the first time…and yes for THE FIRST TIME…for i dont read it once…and i believe that with every time i re-read the book….i learn and realise a corner…that i couldnt before…you go after the idea that i call KISS(KEEP IT SIMPLE SWEET)…

the witch of portobello…is a great book indeed!!that made me stay awake yesterday till 3 A.M….just to finish the last fifty pages…because i couldnt just leave it to the next day…strange how although you dont know any of us…you just speak to each heart as if you know what concerns it (and im saying this…for you do speak to me and my friends…but each one of us…respond differently)…thank you for that protector!!

in this book…i felt like you’re Athena…sherine khalil…hagia sofia….i really had my heart caught by some lines…i dont remember all of them now…but those lines made me feel that Athena speaks of the universe you have in your heart…and mind (lines like we’re not supposed to stand in the way of feelings…that it must stay flowing like a river…and the thing about not to keep ourselves surrounded by all the books we already read and used…that it must travel through the world…and not stand still in time….)

maybe this story is a fiction one…maybe none of the characters really exist with those exact same names…but i believe that there lies Athena…inside each one of us…trying her best to reach the light…the vertex…to make herself heard out loud…to touch this universe…and make it all move…in a beautiful harmonized way….like the beautiful sound of an orchestra…playing an ancient symphony…that speaks a universal language…touching the hearts of all..and expressing a universal mind…and although its ancient…its yet so modern…played with the time and place the players live in…may it be this decade….or hundred years ahead…thank you…for lighting the fire in our souls…and encouraging us…to live each moment…and celebrate it…to the maximum…god bless your soul

I like the last pages that comes as a pleasant shock to the readers. Also I like the idea of the Great Mother and lofty and at the same time real atmospher of your novel. I pray for you and hope in the future to read more fascinating novel from you. My favourite one is “like the flowing river”…Good Luck.

Dear Paulo!
Yesterday, I started to read your new book The Witch from Portobello. Every time I receive your new book I can understand why it happens so. Your ideas always come in the right time. Thank you for the dedication in your book. It is so true that even I do believe today that after seven years of planting seeds with bare hands I will be able to dedicate you my book The Stroke, which has been blessed by the Pope Jan Pavel II. Your main heroine Athena is your life experience, when you know that the EGO is corruption for the whole world. Gifts, which we have received from the Good, need to be developed for the well-being of others. Afterwards, they can grow to gain the sizes that are over the understanding for others, as you write. I teach this my son and he can understand because his soul is clear so far. But what happens with our children??? It is not a chance that he was born on 24 August 1991. Yesterday I hold two books in my hands. The first one was yours Paulo Coelho and the second by Borgese. I am waiting only for you to come.

Dear Mr. Coelho,

many thanks for your last book – Witch of Portobello. It is fabulous.

However finally I was able to understand the Alchemist story. If I understand correctly all the Alchemist story is celebration of work of Carl C. Jung. All archetypes, unconsciousness, dream interpretation, Soul of the Universe, Person’s Destiny, last discovering Santiago’s soul as God’s soul – all is coming from theory of Mr. Jung about process of selfrealisation. Carl Jung reminds the alchemist in his direct expression as he felt like the alchemist. You discovered this and tried to sell the world as one of the myth. Most of the people knows the story however they do not know the right basis for this and I think they do not care about this.

You have the biggest impact on my personal life over last few years. Based on the With of Protobello I discovered myself as one of the alchemist and teacher. I had to come back to my deepest room of my soul to understand it correctly but thanks for this. You are one of my teacher on my own destiny.

Thanks again for this and looking forward to see you somewhere

Paulo,
I enjoyed meeting you in Verbier, Switzerland a few years ago. I was the man who, when I asked a question brought the thunder, whilst the lady who asked the next question brought the sunshine piercing through the rain cloud – remember? You commented on it.

I do find when in dance (which is a true passion of mine) that I can liberate myself and have the spiritual and reality pleins co-existing in harmony. It is the only time the world actually makes real sense and it is simply because everything is in total alignment.

The rest of the time I’m pretty much a mess, full of half truths, contradictions and doubts. I found it interesting and really related to how Athena found the same channel in dance to integrate the two dimensions. What is the problem for me, and I see for Athena too, is that integrating the two dimensions in the real world seems to cause all kinds of conflict. I don’t think I am a fighter…I have seen too much of it in this world already and do not want to contribute to it. I suppose the consequence of this choice is that I will keep producing thunder and storm clouds with all the crosses and contradictions I carry – except when I dance of course.

Maybe one day!

Anyway, I wanted to say hello and thank you! God bless!

Hello to everyone
Hi Paulo! Its been such a joy to meet you, although not in peson but through your writings. I am still trying to find the hidden meaning of the Portobello Witch. I must admit that at first I was a bit puzzled. The characters seemed not very likable, the plot was elementary, yet the messages were powerful.. I will appreciate its meaning any day now!
The Awakening has truly started, and I believe that women will soon discover their power.. Have you ever thought of using Aura-Soma products to help you with your writing? I am a practioner of the method and I would like to send a present for you, Bottle 54, “the well of unshed tears”…
It is amazing! Where can I send it to you? Will you be coming to Athens soon?

Best wishes

Dear Mr. Coelho;

“The Witch of Portobello” is the first of your books I’ve read (I read the advance). I understand now why your writing is so revered. I loved how Athena’s story unfolds to the read via interviews from the other characters and how that’s used to not only show how multi-faceted her personality is, but to also point out how we all are perceived differently by everyone is our lives. I won’t point out specific details of the book since I don’t want to spoil the reading for others. However, I did thoroughly enjoy it’s ending.

For myself, I adhere to the quote that every good book should be read twice-this one certainly fits that category. The first read is needed to get Athena’s story across to us-her relationship with her parents, her son, the men in her life, how she learns and adapts, her goals, etc.

The second read is a must, to go back and deeply contemplate the central themes: what is faith, love, drive, our need for acceptance. And, how it more importanlty points out-how beneficial to us it is to accept ourselves and embrace what’s around us joyfully, to never believe we should, or even can, quit learning.

Quite honestly, I can’t wait to start reading it all over again, and again. I’ll make notions of particular points as I read it the second time, pulling those out to muse over.

Thank you for such a wonderful, inspiring work. “The Witch of Portobello” may have been the first of your works I’ve read, but it certainly won’t be the last.

I’m beginning to understand what love means, and especially what life means… I’m beginning to understand, but I’m not so hasty to know the answer, I’m living every moment, I’m aware of it, and I’m appreciating it…
Athena in her own way made me more open to give and take…
I’m ready to live, since I’m ready to die!
I am able to love since it flows through me, not from me…
Thanks for your words that made the dreams possible…

Dear Paolo Coelho,

I´ve read the first chapters here on the site and I´ve got the books sent from US so I could keep reading it now.

I´ve finished reading it yesterday evening.
For me it´s a delicious stroke that Athena and her story is described by many people – from their angle´s and experiences with her. This shows clearly that we interact in many ways and affect each-other because of who we are ourselves. But also because of who the other is and how they perceive us.

Intuition and guidance are central themes. Our need to have a teacher guiding us who has gone thru the proces that we are about to walk ourselves and what a big gift such a teacher can be. But also what motives the teacher, a need to impose themselves or an ethic tha says “inspire and share your own experience – but first and foremost teach your student to listen to their own inner guidance. I think Edda potrays this in a beautiful way.

For me intuition is our own inner teacher. The word it self means teaching from within. And it takes sincere, demanding work in life to learn to discern if it is our intuition speaking inside to us or not. It requires that we know ourselves very well, also all those parts that make up who we are.

For me, Athena shows clearly that she´s composed by among other parts a capable business woman, an artist, a mother who´s capable of loving, a child who was abandoned and devastated, a woman who has been capable of learning from her life´s story and heal herself. She´s true to her self and thereby finds her way which is unique for her.

For me she demonstrates in a simple way what is true for all of us. We have challenges, we have pain, we have whatever we have to walk thru. And there is a way for us to meet it, be in it, use it and create the life that is uniquely ours to create.
It requires that we use our own guidance, our own teaching from inside, our intuition and that we are true to that.

The book also tells us that intuition can transform and heal, which for me means to make whole, the whole being that we potentially can be, all of us. This goes for both men and women, it includes men, which both protector´s are examples of in the book.

I find it very inspirering that Heron as well as Athena´s boyfriend are men that are or grow into being who they are in the story – and therefore they both in each their way are capable of giving Athena space and freedom to be whom ever she needs to be. For me this describes the possibilities for relations where people let eachother be who they are and give each-other whatever they want to share freely and I think we really need examples of this to show us that it is possible and within our reach – if we dare to be ourselves in our relationships.

I love that Viorel is a child that is an examle of growing up under such circumstances which teach him by example to be true to himself – what a gift to receive as a small child.

As I´m writing this it strikes me that both Athena´s mothers for me are striking examples of forgiveness. Which implies working with whatever hurts, not judging ourselves or each-other and finding a way where we can set ourselves and the other free.

For me, the book is much about authority. Authority we let other´s have over us and authority that we can choose to follow from inside. Inner authority. What that is and what that implies.

God. Is God out there, outside ourselves, described by others with a lot of rules. Or is God inside. All of us. And then where, how and how do we go about that? Is God then femenine, masculine or above having a gender? Is what we´ve called God an energy which both has masculine atributes and femenine atributes and is it times for us to let these 2 ways unify?

Is what we´ve called God until now part of each of us- and also part of all? Are we part of the wholeness or are we not, which f. ex can be in exile, utterly isolated or are we plainly above all other lifeforms?

For me these are central issues in life today that touch many people collectively.
And what is love? Is it a bargain? A game we play with a lot of rules, lies, pain and drama? Does love always require that we are loved by somebody else?
Is that true? Is it also true that love is a flow that´s part of our being, part of all of us, part of who we all naturally are? Is love our true beingness and are we in a tremendously big process of discovering that, individually and collectively?

I find that the Witch of Portobello is a fabulous story that raises these central questions among others in a simple, clear, provoking way that for me says : This is realistically a story of what happens in their lives. And – it´s up to us reading the story to answer questions like these in our own lives. As I see it, we need to find our answers to questions like these. Now. We are all collectivelly being called in a million ways by what is going on in the world today. Not only in “The Witch of Portobello” – in our lives as well. We need to be aware that we are faced with questions like these.

Dear Paolo Coelho,

thank you for a wondrous story with so many vital examples and questions.

with a hug from Denmark

Calling you Paulo at once gives me a feeling of intimacy with you but I feel I cannot possibly do so. I am in awe of your amazing ability to lift a simple storyline and make it so profound. How can I so casually refer to you as Paulo. But Mr Coelho is too formal. Maybe Sir then.
In any case I am getting sidetracked. I was in Dubai on holiday and picked up a copy of your latest book. Needless to add I am a fan of your books and even though they leave me thinking just after I finish them, I go on with life and they get filed away in a corner of my brain. I have this bizarre idea of reading everything when I am older and absorbing them after some of life’s experiences have passed me by. I do not feel I have yet attained the ability to totally grasp what you are saying and implementing them. Your books charge me up and I am so glad that my fifteen year old loves them too.
In ‘witches’ your flirtation with this new writing style is fantastic. I could not put the book down. Athena as seen through the eyes of those who came into her life seems so much more real and the best part is that the way you have left it, it is up to us, the reader, to make up our minds as to what we feel about her. The piece de resistance for me is the epilogue. The elusive boyfriend actually exists. I doubted it like everyone else. It puts so much more depth into her character. In fact it is what completes her and lifts her persona way above everyone else, Edda, Andrea, her real Mum……………
I am a student journalist and am hoping to be able to do a review of the book that is worthy of it. I am nervous.
I will post it on my blog if you are ever interested in reading it.

I salute you. Thank you sir.

Good afternoon Paulo,

Thank you for signing book the other night – it was a pleasure to meet you.

My wife, Elaine, has just started reading, The Witch of Portobello, and is enjoying it very much. I, on the other hand, have just begun, The Alchemist.

Thank you for the advise – yes, Elaine was the best person to ask in relation to which book I should read first (the obvious solutions are sometimes missed.)

Enjoy the rest of your day.
Dean

I have just finished reading your latest book – The Witch of Portobello. I found it such a powerful read that it was very hard to put it down, hence why I completed reading the book in less than a week. I have been reading it non stop in fact – on the bus to work and at home in the evenings. At first I wasn’t too sure that I was going to like The Witch of Portobello as it seemed very different from your other novels but I soon realised that there was a lot I could learn from what was contained in the pages of the book. I almost got to the point of wishing I had a note pad and pen with me when reading so that I could make notes to go back and refer to at a later date. There is so much to learn from the story and your words in the book – too much to take in on the first read so I will be reading the book again very soon. I didn’t really take to the character of Athena but then I got the idea from your writing that we as readers weren’t meant to or at least it !

It didn’t really matter if we liked her or not. In fact even in the book she didn’t care if people liked her or not. I loved the clever way you wrote the book telling her story via her family and friends. A very interesting way of getting a story across and perhaps it made the book more powerful than if it had been told like a normal story by the main character. When I read Eleven Minutes and Veronika Decides to Die I had a clear idea of what the books under lying message was and what you were trying to teach us as readers. As yet I am not totally sure what I have learn’t from the book and what you wanted readers to take away with them. I need to think on this for some time and digest what I have read. This was a very powerful read for me and whilst reading I felt a strange power come over me. Your words really did project something I cannot at this time describe and that is something I will hold onto for a long time to come. Thank you for opening my eyes to the world!

Thank you for releasing such a thought provoki!

Hi ! Paula

So u r the force behind. u chaps r doing a great job. I have read the chapters and am going to get my copy today. So in way I have not read the book ( fully that is !). As usual Paulo has been able to touch a chord in my heart, like most fellow humans I suppose. These chapters & the discussions on them were ‘enlightening’. ( why r u closing the comments, anyway that is u’r choice ). I am still a littl;e intrigues though, why did paulo name the book as he did. perhaps I would have gained a better understanding after reading the whole of it. In case u’r rule prevents this from appearing on the blog, it’s OK
Paula & Paulo, gr8 work. thanks !
