hello Mr. coelho, i am reading the witch of portobello and i wanted to congratulate you for this marvelous piece of work. congrats :)
Dear Paulo!
How did you write this book? Did you meet a person like Athena and told her story? Did you write from your own experiences? It is amazing, it feels like you could read my mind and put all the questions, dilemas from my head into the book. And according to the comments on this web site, there are many other people who feel the same as I do. Your books touch so many hearts that I can’t help but to think that they come from a divine source or better yet that you somehow are in touch with the divine.
Your books are all so inspiring and I am trully sorry that I have missed the oportunity to meet you in person.
Thank you.
Funny how the people we meet can change our lives, shape our being, or set us on another path in life. A friend of mine did just that, she gave me your book, The Witch of Portobello, and my spirit was moved – like the waves of the water move across the surface.
Your books have inspired me to take a leap of faith, to be different as your Witch of Portobello did. I was faced with an impossible choice of family, work, passion all having something to offer and all showing me a pretty future. When realism and idealism came face to face with eachother, I found myself saying “I am a pencil…”. While it seemed strange to my family, I truly believed that ultimately the hand that controlled the pencil would guide me. I am happy to say that, 2 after two days of believing that completely and absolutely, the pencil has started writing guided by the hand–and everything is reconciling in a way that no human could ever make it so. Thank you for your inspiration. Your books to me have become a way of life and way to find my true meaning and connection with the world, perhaps even one day the Soul.
Sir,
I am Anju from India.I finished reading ‘Witch of Portobello’,and I feel that the character Athena is the most interesting person I’ve ever read about.Sir, I am writing this letter to tell you how much inspiring it is,to receive a mail from you. Now, my exams are over, and I am very happy ,because your mails kept me positively oriented all through these days.I always find your books very inspiring.I feel that I am hearing a wonderful story from a person who is just like my grandpa, who has great affection for me.Sir ,whenever I receive your mail, i feel very much happy and I am at my best.I will continue reading all your books, and spread its fragrance in the world around me
wishing you a good day
love
Hello.
I just finished the book about the witch of Portobello, and just wanted to let you know how much i enjoyed it. I have read every book you have written that has been published in norwegian and you have been my favourite author for many years now. And you books have made a greate impact on my life. when I read I learn a lot about myself at the same time and every book is an eye opener. the funny thing is that I already know the things I read but I have not thought about it in the wright way before:)lots of love from Alice!
I’ve just finished it and I experience an inexplicable feeling of loss. I didn’t want to finish it actually. It was amazing. Thank you. Question: How can you write about a woman’s psyche being a man?
i have read a number of your books and it changed my perspective on my life and the world.
i was just wondering if ‘the witch of portobello’ is based on a true facts or is it just fictitious…..
Paulo,
I just want to take a moment to thank you and honor you for making the continual choice to share yourself so powerfully.
Now, I’ve just finished reading “The Witch of Portobello” at a time when I am just beginning to dive-in and understand the power of my feminine energy. I am already planning some workshops to empower women to honor themselves as an expression of the the Divine Feminine, and all I had to do was read a line in your book, and more ideas started flowing. I literally, had to put your book down in order to list out: speak to young women in business, create a workshop about loving our feminine body, speak to girls in schools, write a song about the goddess etc. At the end of my list, I wrote: Meet Paulo Coelho. Ha! Ha! I was truly inspired.
I am also in the process of leaving my day-job and pursuing my business full-time–a scary, yet exhilarating process. The energy of Athena is EXACTLY who I needed to connect with right now. I am transforming my life, and inspiring others to do the same, and it felt so comforting to see myself reflected in this character–she is beautiful, strong, whole in herself, and it was so powerful to be reminded that I am the same.
The simplicity and humanness of your message and your characters opens me to my own creative potential and feeds my passion to serve all those who cross my path. Above all, your books remind me of my infinite connection to God and that power and magic that exists when I continue to give and open myself to receive Love.
Thank you for sharing your growth with so many. Your words continue to inspire me.
Many blessings to you as you continue this rich path.
I would just like to say that your book the witch of portobello has made me realise some very important things about myself! I am a student at uni and am contemplating what to do with my life, your book has given me courage to just go out and do what I really want! Thankyou and I look forward to reading the rest of your novels!
yes, I thoroughly enjoyed the “witch of portobello” which I read during my stay in South Africa, meeting a ‘Sangoma” = medicine-woman,her powers, reminded me of Athena, because she accessed it (power) through dance as well…so, it was perfect timing, to read this book then….thank you, for inspiring me.
Hello,
I felt compelled to leave you a message after finishing your book this morning. All your books never fail to make me think and re-think the pure joy and wonder at being alive! One day I will set down my own feelings on paper and hopefully make some sense of them as you try to do. Thankyou for sharing your thoughts. I hope you find time to read this as im sure many people must feel as moved as me to contact you.
best wishes to you,
Dear Paulo,
I’ve just finish reading your book – Congratulation on producing such a masterpiece. I’m sure you hear that a lot and I’m not orginal in saying that. I just felt a need to write to you after reading it as your book has answered a lot of my questions that I had recently. I read many of your books but only a few days ago I’ve bought this one, although my friend (who also is your fan) told me to read it a long time ago. Maybe my grandmother spirit was guiding me to buy it. By the way, you said in one of your interviews “[...] my religion is more important than the men that are trying to guid it”. This is exactly what my grandma use to say to me when I was aking her why is she such a devoted Catholic when I had doubts about the prists and the church.
I admire your talent!
Many thanks for your books!
even as I write this I know I will sound mad. I have to ask if Witch of Portobello is based on any true facts. I have read many of your books and never felt the characters to be so real. I lived in London for many years when I as a young woman and met many strange and wonderful people. I would have been one of Athena’s group if I had found it! Your writing is truly thought provoking and calming. Thank you.
Dear Paulo Coelho,
I hope and wish that you are well.
I’m just reading “A Bruxa de Portobello”. Even l did not yet finished it l would like to thank you for such a great book.
I wish you all the best,
I have recently read your book The witch of Portobello, in it one scene has fascinated me, and I was curious where its foundation lies. Once when Athena is dancing she stops and says something like “When I die I want to be buried standing up, because I’ve been on my knees my entire life.” It seems so familiar to me and I was wondering where that came from, was it based on actual events?
Thank you
Im currently reading The Witch of Portabello and its helping me escape from my full time MSc studies, as all your books are such a wonderful escape in to a spiritual world.
Thank you and keep up the good work.
I’m reading your book The Witch of Portobello and just reached the chapter where she is refused communion after signing her divorce papers. Why? Church teaching is that only remarried divorced Catholics should be excluded not divorced ones. Can you explain please?
after reading only 3 pages of the book I fell in love with it instantly! the fact that the words came out of real mouths of real individuals gives me a certain fee;ing; as if the book were alive!!so honest and pure.it’s such an amazing experience, reading this book! I recommend it to all Paulo fans around the world with any kind of belief for this book talks to the heart and the soul.Paulo, please please please keep on writing as long as you can cuz your writing gives us hope…it brings love to the world.Really does!
I have just finished this book, which is my 5th Coelho book this year. I also just finished a weekend retreat with my sisters in spirituality, with my own “protector” learning the ways of the Goddess. I loved this book, and it mirrored many struggles I have encountered while coming to own my own divinity. That said, the ending was not believable for me. As a mother, I don’t believe Athena would have left Voirel under any circumstances…I often consider leaving my own children, but the fact is that they would be
devastated….I (and I believe that Athena) could not be that selfish. The murdered victim scenario was also not believable for me. I love reading your path Mr. Coelho, and I would love to be able to attend a writers workshop with you, if you ever have one.
In Spirit,
Sunny
I am currently reading your book “The Witch of Portobello.” i just wanna thank you for writing this book because it seemed like some part of athena is like me…I’m just 17. Now i realized who i am and what i am in this world. But i’m still reading the book, and although i’m not yet half-way finished, i assume that i will find out who she really is and discover more about her. Well, again thank you for writing such a good book. Take care and God bless.
Dear Paulo,
I have just read the Alchemist and the Witch of Portobello during the last week, the first time I have read any of your work. I am amazed by the themes and the ideas explored, so close to my own experience in life (not the actual facts but the progress and realisation of what is important and what we are (should be) seeking in life. I am over 60 and it has taken me a lifetime to find the path that you depict in your books. I too am an unconventional catholic, looking for my own way, embracing life, love and pain, having learned the hard way that one must give everything and take the risks, embrace the pain that will surely ensue, but love without holding back anything. You are so right. So much in life cannot be analysed or rationalised, there is a restlessness that cannot be stilled, mysteries that cannot be explained, much that must just be lived, experienced, tasted, embraced, if we are to know the true joys of life. And that most powerful of human drives, love, just like God or Mother Earth, defies explaining. As you say, love just IS – so simple, so profound, yet many of us spend a whole lifetime without understanding this. Thank you for your enlightenment.
I have read several of your books and find them inspiring but at the same time, elusive, as human capabilities tend to be. I finished reading “The Witch of Portobello” and it incited thoughts that I can only keep to myself. I want to challenge you with the notion of somehow making one of your central, strong female characters ugly (or average wallflowers)? Would Athena have been less strong if she were ugly?
Humans love things that are beautiful. so when you’re not, it hurts tremendously to not have that attribute. Beautiful women get all the attention, those who calculate their sexiness, those who are oblivious of it. and there are women who are intelligent, who sometimes feel that that’s the only card they have to play in life. those that are cunning nurturing vindictive innocent . the list goes on.
Can you create a story around a female character that is not beautiful, so that I (and many other women) can somehow hope one day that all the themes of your books can be easier to seek and achieve?
Dear Anne Marie,
I completely understand the way you feel, however, I don’t see it that way. I believe that each and every one of us holds a natural beauty as we are all God’s children, that is the pure beauty in it. I actually didn’t feel that Athena was such a physically attractive person (except for her “beautiful breasts!!!)
I have always felt very confident in myself despite the fact that I’m not very attractive. However, people have quoted otherwise about me, telling me how attractive they find me, even sexy. I realized it must have been because of my energy and confidence. When you carry yourself in the grace of God and feel attractive just knowing that you are alive, it doesn’t matter how you look physically, honestly, your energy will do all the talking.
So try to look at “beautiful” characters metaphorically, we cannot see their energy through words, but I bet there so many attractive people because of their energy and love for life. When you love life, life loves you back.
I personally absolutely loved the book, I am a belly dancer, therefore, I know how it feels to be in touch with a spiritual side whilst dancing. It is an absolute divinity.
I love Athena, at the beginning of the book, I thought she was going to turn out to be a crazy witch (haha seriously) but it just made me realize it was on the contrary, the world is a crazy place, and by the world I mean ignorant people. Lost souls.
I absolutely love the idea of a feminine side of God and completely believe it to be true. there are always two sides to each story. God made opposites to balance. God must be the complete world itself, including men, women, animals, plants etc.
Spirituality is the way, I have found that many times where I’ve talked to myself I have found the answers that I needed more than the times where I had spoken to “friends”.
Long live Paulo Coelho’s inspirational words of true love.
Peace and Love.
Cristina
hi this book has given me a great of understanding of myself as I feel things and see things to, I myself read a lot of books and before I read the pages after 163, when athena goes to heron flat. I looked at all my books and thought I have to give some of them away. I do not believe anything is conisidental and feel that there is a lot of athenas out there and I am one of them. Could you give me advice on this and possibly futher reading and music to help. Hope to hear soon. Kind Regards Karen
dear mr coelho,
i really loved your book. i thought it was fascinating, mysterious, thought provoking and wonderfulk.albeit, i did not like the way the story ended. i know it was not a fiction but still fact seemed a lot like fiction. i mean, those are the kinds of ending that typical “song-and-dance” bollywood movies have. im not trying to be rude or anythign just expressing my views.but, the book whole on the whole was absolutely marvelous. it did really made a huge impact on me. and im so thankful tht i found your book. always keep writing such inspiring books.
Hello Paulo
I trust you are well. Now that I’m ‘here’ I’m not sure what to say, except thank you for your exceptional work. Your books hold great meaning for me and clarify my thinking. I’ve never enjoyed a book as much as I did The Witch of Portobello -amazingly well written and full of ‘keys’, for which I’m very grateful.
Blessings and well done!
With love
Dear Mr Coelho
I really love your books and the spirit that you put in them, I have just finished the witch of portobello and I really saw myself in Athena, no that I sing well or play the guitar, but I found myself in her many times
it is such an amazing story and ending, WHAT A “COLPO DI SCENA”! I really believe in the feminine side of God, there are things that you write and I can find around me
your books have really inspired me during the most difficult moments of my life
since I was a child,I have always read everything, expecially ancient Greek mithology, I used to write small stories, my stories
to be honest, I had quite a wild imagination
my dream is one day to find my story and put it down properly , maybe one day I’ll find a white feather : )
Best regards
Chanel
Dear Mr Coelho
It is years I wanted to write you, your books have been my best friends from the very first day I read by the river of Piedra River.

Mr. Coelho,
Thank you ever so much for “The witch of portabello”. I just finished it on a plane ride (as unfortunately that seems the only time I have for reading these days; thankfully work sends me away a lot!) I was very intrigued and drawn in by Athena’s spiritual journey as I don’t ever know that I’ll be finished with mine. What struck me most of all was the statement of the book, that love simply IS. I have fallen in love with a man through all odds and, to be frank, common sense as a feminist. He is intensely spiritual and I’ve tried my hardest to figure out why I love him….and I find myself with Athena “I don’t know and I don’t care”. The logical side of me has been battling for weeks as to whether this is worth pursuing and it took Athena’s boyfriend to tell me it is.
I’m currently reading 11 minutes and have to admit that although i know not much about sacred sex, I think I can confidently say I’ve experienced it already and it was undescribeable. I look forward to following Maria’s journey. Thank you Sir.
Dear Paulo, thank you for writing the Witch of Portobello. As a child,I shunned my birthname Isis because it seemed “weird”, too “different” and all I longed for was to belong and be accepted, and acceptable. In the irony which is my life, I am also Jewish and here I was given the name of the Ultimnate Female Goddess, and asked by my religion to abhor and reject all deities and idols , worhsipping only One G-d. I have struggled too long with this deception of life and sacredness and am just now entering into wholeness allowing my own intuition and “protector’ to guide me and send me teachers. Your book has been invaluable to me and certainly taught me well. I travel extensively as a Flight Attendant snd have gone to Brazil many times, perhaps someday our paths shall cross, take care…..Love, Isis
Just complete reading the book. The contents are as usual nice. But the last chapter is disappointing. It showed Athena’s character to be manipulative and scheming. Why should she keep Ryan under dark as to the existence of her boy friend? Athena schemed and separated Andrea from her boy friend and then ditched him too!!! What happened to Athena’s parents? Were they aware that their adopted daughter lives on? The book threw up more questions than what it answered!
Dear, Paolo Coelho,
I’m completely in your books. When I read them i feel like someone is
wrapping my deepest thoughts in words. And it is great to realize I’m no the only one who is searching for The Way and finding your books as a
manual of Life. :))
I bet you receive millions of messeges like this every day. Still – I
would like to say thank you because of what you do. I’d also like to find more about the Mother cult you write in your book “Witch of Portobello”. Yesterday I got really confused – I believe in God and from your previous books I gained so much, but now I somehow lost the link between God The God and God The Mother? So – SOS!!!! :)) :)) :))
Thank you in advance! :)
Your fan :D

I dont take anything is coincidence anymore after reading your books.
I am now reading “The Witch of Portobello” and searched online and got this site.
I am amazed to find there are only that much of chapters uploaded here in this site which I have completed reading in my copy of the book. I have yet to read twelfth chapter.
Is it a coincidence or it is predecided that I would visit this site right after reading Eleventh Chapter of your book?
first of all is my pleasure to keep on touch with the best writer on the world , indeed ; i like your pure way of merging the east with the west of the main charecter athena(sherine) and her way of fulfill her target no mater how pain she feels . best regards .
what qualities of athena made her tha witch of portobello? is
>she any like of the traditional witches we know? what made her different?
Greetings gentle warrior!
Although I have not yet finished The Witch of Portobello, your telling of the story has moved me many times as I savor the words. As a born Witch I want to thank you for telling our story with such grace, insight, truth and beauty.
As I read Edda’s passage that begins on page 150 I was moved by the Mother to write the following which I would greatly love to dedicate to you and your work. It is a poem I would like to post on the Powerful Human website, the love child of my twin flame and I (linked below).
Untitled
Dedicated to Paulo Coelho
Find yourself within the moment
and the moment within yourself
will reveal the beauty of creation
for the nothing that began all things
is the emptiness containing all potential
Be Blissed!
Your books always teach me invaluable lessons and give me clues for my way going forward. Is there any way to find Nabil Alaisi, a Bedouin in your book The Witch of Portobello. I have been looking for a sufi guide and the art he can teach may be what I’ve been seeking for a while now. Many many thanks.
Dear Mr.Paulo,
Thank you for your message. Now I’m reading The Witch of Portobello.
As far as I understand from your books, you were carried away by religious mysteries. Before I thought that such mysteries were just in the past but not today.
Books are interesting indeed.
All the best,
Tolkuna, Bishkek
Kyrgyzstan
How did you arrive with that kind of story and style? I really
admired the way you wrote that novel and how you discussed love…
Dear Paulo,
as a continuous reader of yours, I follow your events and development (as human and personality, because I think your opus does show this).
I just bought your new book and publication “The Witch of Portobelle”.
I’ve been reading a recension about it.
There were different voices to it.
I can agree with both main-opinions:
On the one hand, it might appear a bit bothering, maybe also because of the difficult matter you handle with.
On the other hand, it shows you again as the without doubt brilliant Paulo Coelho whom I know, the writer and author,
who is able to approach theme in a particular way.
Hi I’m Elaine from the Philippines. I really love your books especially the Witch of Portobello. But I like to know one thing, who or what is your inspiration in writing those books and what makes you unique from the different writers these days?
I’ll look forward to your answer.
sir,
its our pleasure that ur able to read ur novel.ur my favourite author.ur spritual n philosphilcal books hav changed my life.still nw i had read opnly 3 books of urs i.e. alchemist, veronika decides to die and witch of portobello.others books i dnt get here .its very hard a get copy of ur books.n also its cost is also is too high 2 purchase every books.
i dnt nw what to do afterwards.
yours sincerly
Dearest Paulo,
I have read Eleven Minutes, The Alchemist, The Witch of Portebello,
Veronica decides to die and will read all the remaining one also as I have learned the biggest lesson of life, “Start Dreaming and turn pages to move ahead with clear vision and high hopes. What ever ill happens, makes you much more stronger and just move ahead with high hopes. Hopefully one day dream will come true”.
I have really become a big fan of you and respect you because you venture places and write true stories, helping us to find ourselves which is the biggest discover we can make in this world. Its really very hard to know our potential within us.
I red “la strega di Portobello” and I found it very good. As the others woman protagonist of your book she is a little reflection of the woman in the world, Athena maybe is a modern kind of woman the thing that bring me for athena is that her powerfull is ,that she never leaves that her warrior soul be asphyxieted from the problems of her life. But I ask to me How much difficult would be to love a woman as Athena….
I hope to see you next time and I hope to read a new book too…
with love
adriana from Rome
I finished reading the witch of portobello, and it left me with a bit of an uncomfortable feeling. I was confused and didnt understand exactly what P. Coelho was trying to say. It seems like a very lonely life to live as Athena did, but I guess if someone is strong enough to do it, it will bring its own rewards. Does anyone know if it was real?
I am 19 but still i feel as experienced in the field of Divine Nature as any old one would, just because of Sir Paulo coelho & my Friend Vijay who suggested me to read this book, thanks to both of you.
