The slayer of dragons

by Paulo Coelho on May 30, 2007

By Paulo Coelho

Zhuangzi, the famous Chinese writer, tells the story of Zhu Pingman, who went in search of a teacher in order to learn the best way to slay dragons.

The teacher trained Pingman for ten whole years, until he had honed to perfection the most sophisticated dragon-slaying techniques.

Pingman spent the rest of his life looking for dragons in order show off his skills: to his great disappointment, he never found a single dragon.

The writer of the story comments: ‘We all prepare ourselves to slay dragons, but end up instead being devoured by the ants of the details that we never bothered to look at.’

Hello Darling Paulo,

I don’t understand, why do they say ‘the devil is in the detail’ I mean, why the devil? that’s already giving it a negative connotation no? what’s wrong with knowing the detains, as your story states, it is very important to pay attention to the details, also, like Santiago keeping his eye on the oil in the spoon.

So why do they say the devil is in the detail?? I don’t get it!!

love
C.

Ohh my! :) I have a question to you, Paulo, with this message. But if “the devil lives in the details”, it seems that I have now something to think, again! :) How can I know or be sure that I can see the difference between the things? I understood the message but I also see people so attached with the details, that sometimes they’re not able to see the whole scene. Ohh… I’m thinking here… And someone needs to slay the dragons, no? Where they exist, of course. Ok. Let me think a little more about this text!

Be blessed you! You always make me think! :D
