The mother giraffe makes her child suffer

By Paulo Coelho

The giraffe gives birth standing up, so the first thing that happens to a new-born giraffe is a fall of about two metres.

Still dazed, the baby tries to stand up on its four legs, but its mother behaves very strangely: she gives the baby giraffe a gentle kick which sends it sprawling. It tries to get up and is again knocked down.

This process is repeated several times, until the new-born giraffe is too exhausted to stand. At that point, the mother kicks it again, forcing it to get to its feet. After that, she does not push the baby giraffe over again.

The explanation is simple: in order to survive predators, the first lesson a giraffe must learn is to get to its feet quickly. The mother’s apparent cruelty finds support in an Arabic proverb: ‘Sometimes, in order to teach something good, you have to be a little rough.’

um their is a greek terminology that i learned and sometimes cruelty is better than being helpless and most giraffe’s give birth standing up so :( dont be mean she is teaching the baby giraffe that he needs to be fast and nimble like giraffe’s need to be to escape predator’s,

The Jay chatters and chatters telling Stories, histories and hero tales,to her eggs, and when she is sure they have listened, and learned enough to repeat only the relevant, unique to each individual, and no one is taught by anything other than the Spirit of Life, but everyone learns, life long, long may we all live…then, just as the Eagle, the jay pushes her young from the nest, and meets them on the ground to feed, and chatter some more…xxxx

Deux metres ce n’est rien Paulo,il a fallu que je me procure un parachute pour ma chute ….. peut etre c’est le feline en moi. Qui sait?

The nature is wise. After falling several times by a hole that you try to jump, you learn to avoid that hole taking another way. Or what is the same, after encountering several times over the same stone, you learn to jump it or to avoid it. But before you have to fall.
    Kisses,

that is tough love… just like our parents when we were learning how to walk they had to let go of our hand so we could walk by ourselves they did that knowing that we could fall and get hurt, but there is no other way of learnig and they were next to us to protect us and that gave us confidence
or when we were learning how to ride a bicycle, and then learning how to drive a car
or when they had to let us make our onw decissions, that was tough for them because they think only they can make the right decissions for us but still they let us do it.parents only want to do what is right for us but they are not right all the time. there are those parents, the overprotective, the ones that wont let go of our hands, they will see us as their babies even if we are 20 and will not accept the deccisions we make in our lives, and therefore we are not going to be happy because we are making them unhappy. so i would rather have a giraffe mother because even if she is tough i know she will alway be by my side to take care of me after i fall.

    hi paulo,
what genetic programming, I am sure animals are actually on a higher plane than us humans. They are the living proof that nature provides whatever you really really need everytime without fail. Be it population control, soon we will be facing male and female sterility.Be it global warming and eco clean up by washing us with the present downpour trend. Be it a catastrophe yet to be perceived by us , our mistake we have become too plastic oriented, but nature has already taking steps to cushion the meteor impact. Dear paulo what is your view of the future?

Interesting. I’m currently teaching my wife computer savvy-ness and use of the internet, she doesn’t take too well to my Giraffee-styled teachings.

Perhaps for humans we should be a little softer around the edges.
