Messenger of Peace for the UN

By Paulo Coelho

Dear Friends,

it’s with great honor that I accepted the invitation from His Excellency United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to become a Messenger of Peace for the UN.

Below is the press release with more information about this fantastic opportunity:

SECRETARY-GENERAL DESIGNATES BRAZILIAN AUTHOR PAULO COELHO AS MESSENGERS OF PEACE

On Thursday, 21 September – the International Day of Peace – United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will honour Brazilian author Paulo Coelho and Her Royal Highness Princess Haya Bint Al Hussein of Jordan by designating them as United Nations Messengers of Peace. They will join four other Messengers of Peace, individuals who possess widely recognized talents in the fields of art, literature, music and sports, in helping to raise worldwide awareness of the ideals and activities of the United Nations.

Paulo Coelho, world renowned author of “The Alchemist”, uses his universal appeal to help underprivileged members of Brazilian society through his Paulo Coelho Institute, which he founded with his wife, Christina Oiticica. He is also an advocate of multiculturalism through his work with UNESCO as a Special Counselor for Intercultural Dialogues and Spiritual Convergences.

A political activist since his youth, Mr. Coelho will continue to promote intercultural dialogue and focus on the needs of children around the world as a Messenger of Peace. The native of Rio de Janeiro has enchanted readers from around the world for years and gathered numerous international awards for his works, which have been translated into more than 65 languages.

In selecting Mr. Coelho for this designation, the Secretary-General said, “Mr. Coelho’s “talent as a writer and his exceptional ability to touch the lives of men and women across boundaries and cultures would make him a powerful Messenger”.

While previously scheduled commitments will preclude his attendance at the International Day of Peace Observance, Mr. Coelho said he was honoured by the designation. “I gladly accept this responsibility and am committed to do my best to work towards a better future for the current and next generations”.

The other Messengers of Peace and their areas of focus are: Ms. Jane Goodall, the environment; Michael Douglas, disarmament and peace and security; Yo-Yo Ma, youth; and Elie Wiesel, human rights and the Holocaust. Italian opera singer Luciano Pavarotii was a Messenger of Peace for nearly a decade before his death in Modena, Italy on 6 September 2007. Mr. Douglas, Ms. Goodall and Mr. Wiesel also will attend the International Day of Peace Observance.

  • Dear Paulo.

I read a while ago, on this blog an article about eunuchs.

I woke up early this morning and couldn’t help thinking about that.

I related that article with cancer.

Why? Because I felt like a eunuch myself after I had cancer.

I also felt androgynous, one side is feminine and the other is masculine. So I guess I am complete.

I have felt your pain Paulo, and like you “I am proud of my scar. I’ll wear it like a medal”.

To-day, for the first time, I feel free and “frankly, I don’t give a damn what others can think of me anymore. It is so liberating.

I finally got to the bottom of one of my problem and find a solution. I still have a long way to go. It is pleasing to see a glimpse of the light though.

Had I know what I know now, I am convinced I will be free of cancer and depression. That is one of the reason why I believe that education is one area we need to focus on. Educating our children to think in a healthy way for a healthier world.

I thank you Paulo and everyone on this blog for all your wisdom. knowledge and love and very proud to have been able to participate in this blog.

I am forever in your debt.

    Much love,

Thank you thank you thank you Paulo. You rock! I love you

    Beijos :)

    On cancer -

The different ways of dealing with cancer from one country to another one is interesting.

It makes me wonder who makes the decisions in these matters?

In some countries - for example in France - when you have cancer, the Social Security looks after you. For five years, everything is included and free - ex: with breast cancer, reconstruction, scans, doctors visits, mammography, visits to oncologists , medication , etc -

    Cher Paulo,

Je me sens libre.

As a parent, I did exactly the same as your Mum and Dad.

I realised, after my son was diagnosed that my son was not mad at all.

From that day on, I swore I wanted to do something about mental illness. I just did not know how to go about it.

When the same thing happened to me, I then had full confirmation of it.

The fact that I came onto the Paulo Coelho’s blog is no accident either. Of this,I am sure.

I first learned about judgment through a stranger. I remember that day quite clearly.

As we were discussing life in general, what followed took me completely by surprise.

I started listening attentively as he proceeded to explain to me the reasons why he stopped judging people. He had noticed that every time he said something bad about someone, retributions were coming back with a vengeance - like a boomerang -

    It was so simple.

I remember thinking at the time ;”Why didn’t I think of that myself?”

    That stranger was my son.

My son provided the link I needed to further my quest with spirituality ; the observations.

I want to pay tribute to my son. Without him I would not be where I am today.

If you knew my son, you will like him straight away - guaranteed -

My son, despite having all the external attributes of being tall,
handsome is a very engaging young man who looks you honestly in the eyes (like his Dad) He has that special human quality that makes him different from the norm.

I believe my son can look into other people’s souls.

My son to me truly is “a beautiful mind”.

  • Dear Paulo,.

The lack of validation of people’s feelings can be, in my opinion a breeding-ground for envy, jealousy, resentment, anger, violence, illness, depression, etc.

My questions to you, Paulo are :

Do you believe that the implementation of a self-esteem program from an earlier age can be a step forward in ensuing better communication with each other?

How important is the validation of feelings in life?

    Thank you,

  • Dear Paulo,
I am quite determined to go along that path because I believe that Education is part of an entitlement each parents must received from their Government. The assurance from them that our children will receive a free education from Early childhood to University level.
It must be free of charge.
It is the same with a good health system.
We must have a say in what is happening in the affairs of our Government.
Otherwise, why are we electing these people for?
Paulo, is what I am saying make sense?

  • Dear Paulo,
I do not know what my personal legend is.
There is one thing that I do know though - the system of education has to change -

I am a mother of two beautiful and very smart children.
There is one thing that I am really proud of - I taught my children to read -
They have travelled from one side of the world at a very young age and they love music.
Most of their life was spent in a remote area -thousand of kilometers from the big cities -
These areas abound with mineral wealth and generate billions of dollars for the country.
My children did their primary school and were very good students.
The High School was taking children up to Year 11.
After that you had to send your children to boarding school.
You look at the way other parents deal with that, you speak with the teachers. After a while you work out a pattern - all the engineers 'kids are all going to boarding school from Year 8 -
Anyway, after agonising for a while and after discussions with teachers and other parents, we decided (at a great cost) to send our child to boarding school.
We were assured at the time that the curriculum was exactly the same whether we were here or in the city.
Before my child was accepted, I had to deal with the local priest, who came and knock on my door telling me that if I was not going to attend church with my children, he will not sign the paper for the private school, do you believe it?
I was faced with the same thing with the youngest one - the difference being that he was not baptised -. It was going to take I don't know how long to have him baptised. Fortunately, the priest went away on holiday, the locum one (bless him) who had spent some time in South America, baptised him on the following Sunday.(God was on my side)
Our eldest child was accepted, after an interview and went to a beautiful private school.
After the first report, our child who was top of the class in maths, physics, etc, suddenly was bottom of the class.
At the end of the year, we were faced with having to disburse more money for private tuition.
He was so far behind that he failed his maths exams.
When this happened we decided to send our other child to boarding school from year 8.

The first year reports were excellent top of the class in all subjects, the second year , changes started to appear, the third year was getting worse, and the last years were quite bad.
During the first years, I called the school . I was concerned about my child arriving at 10pm at night when he was only 13.
The reply I got was that if I was not happy with that arrangement , I could fly down with him. ??
Other incident and I am not going to list them all
I received a phone call from the Housemaster telling me that my child had left his room in a mess.
??? “Well, I said, what do you want me to do I live 1,000kms away ?
    He could not answer me.
Then my child I believe started smoking the funny cigarettes.
I am asking you Paulo, what do you think?
What is their duty of care ?
I am sending my children to boarding school expecting that my child will be supervised up to a certain standard.
    I believe the school failed.
I also believe the government failed by not providing my children with the proper curriculum.
    This is utterly ridiculous.
    Something has to change.
Seems to me that private schools are only interested in the fees they are receiving and the welfare of a child is of no concern to them.
Not only do you pay the price for living in these remote areas, you also have to pay the price for sending your children to boarding schools.

What is wrong with this world?
Are we going to sit there and do nothing ?

    Thanks for reading my comment.
    Love

His Excellency United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon,

Whilst we are enjoying a high standard of living, we are still unwilling to take responsibility for all the devastation that has occurred over centuries and that we have inflicted onto people through bigotry, narrow-mindedness wars, etc.

When are we going to realise that unless we change our way of thinking , we are heading nowhere?

I want my children and my grand-children to benefit from my numerous mistakes and choices.

A multi-cultural nation is, to my mind, one who is going to embrace fully those who have suffered from our actions.
A nation that will respect the right of these people to exist and that will allow them through Education from both sides, to participate into the Society with the help of the Government of that country.
A multicultural nation is one who is willing to teach foreign languages and is committed to it - It is a nation that realises the full value of it - one that enriches and stretches the mind -

More and more languages are disappearing from the face of the earth.
When this occurs, a whole community dies - their soul vanishes -
This is what happened to the Natives Indians of South America, the Aboriginals, the Natives Indians of America, the French did it in Indochina by changing their written language into a Westernised way, etc.

When you live abroad - you observe the way people live and behave -
There are things that you like - others you don’t - it is human.
The experiences you acquire makes you change your mind about different aspects of your life - for the better -
You are witnessing a change in your make-up - your D.N.A. - You suddenly find yourself “a foreigner” in a different land.
Things you took for granted in your own country do not apply there.
When you speak a different language, you have a common goal - you understand each other better - there are no walls in front of you.
    It breaks down the barriers.

By all means, let us have a common language - be it English or another - in order for us to communicate and understand each other better.

This can be done without taking the dignity and the spirit of other nations. Our roots are at stake here. It is our heritage.

I see a way of approaching this problem by collaborating with other countries and see what is being done and take the best from it so that your own country and its citizens continue to learn and grow and prosper.

I believe, education is one of our priority.
This has to start with the future - our children - and how we are going to educate them will determine the world.

For example, there are two schools that have drawn my attention.
The Reggio’s Emilia school in Italy and the Instituto Paulo Coelho “Meninos de Luz” in Brazil (for underprivileged children).

These schools focus on the education of children from birth to 6 years old and further.
We know how important those years are for the development of children. It determines what they will become for the future.

This is done through careful observations of each individual child to see what their competences are, using all the senses - visual, touch, taste, smell, hearing and emotional -
A program is implemented in an open-dialogue between the child, the parents and the teachers - all collaborating in an innovative way to bring the best in the child, by acquiring critical skills that will allow him to learn through his mistakes and teaching him other skills in an engaging way that enhances his creativity.

By listening and guiding the child in a loving caring way, the child is able to express himself in a responsible manner that will benefit his community and the world in the future.

The teaching of philosophy at a young age is also a valuable asset; in that it allows to look at different points of views, acquiring critical skills , analysing them and making-up your own mind about it.
It gives the child an independent way of reasoning and therefore leads him to become a better adjusted person that can contribute in a positive and mature and responsible way. The child becomes a free thinker.

Personally, I am in favor of children being taught also at an earlier age, the different religious philosophies - Buddhist, Christian, Indian, Islamic, Jewish, Japanese - so that they can gain a better understanding of humanity and make-up their own mind on which religion to choose if they so desire later on in life.

Music is an important part of development.
International music is not widely broadcast.
When you listen to songs in different languages, you get transported in a different world.
It is the same with films. Watching movies with subtitles enriches you even if you can only grasp one word - At the end of the film, you feet a connection with the people of that country.

I believe this might be one step towards reaching peace.

    Sincerely,

    Marie-Christine
