This course of thought brought to mind the book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho which was life-changing book for me several years ago. His premise was that most people drudge along in less-than-satisfying careers for years and years all the while saying to themselves: "I am working so that one day I can REALLY do what I want to do with my life" . . . and they work through all of the best years of their lives and never get around to fulfilling their passion. I have a theory about the investment world - that it’s all a game for self-sustenance.
It’s rather smart actually, to have people save & invest & so on, so that what the world actually expends is really more than what it does have. And it has to continue because it is a vicious cycle, and maybe more vicious to others than to some.
I read your 3 short essays on Manuel today (the ones compiled in ‘Like a Flowing River’). Despite never having given meaning to his life, he lived a good life, with love. Always wondered about the importance of meaning.
Perhaps I will learn it…?
