I am invited to go to Guncan-Gima, the site of a Zen Buddhist temple. When I get there, I am surprised to see that the extraordinarily beautiful building, which is situated in the middle of a vast forest, is right next to a huge piece of waste ground.
I ask what the waste ground is for and the man in charge explains:
‘That is where we will build the next temple. Every twenty years, we destroy the temple you see before you now and rebuild it again on the site next to it. This means that the monks who have trained as carpenters, stonemasons and architects are always using their practical skills and passing them on to their apprentices. It also shows them that nothing in this life is eternal and that even temples are in need of constant improvement.’

i understand that I think it is a good idea
I too liked the message very much.
The only constant is change.
Sad to think that they truly feel nothing in life is eternal. Makes me praise the lord that I am not a Zen Buddhist. Life would seem so empty without all the eternal realities I expierence around me. I guess that is their goal though is to expierence nothingness. What a sad state of existence, and to think they want to expierence that forever. I guess man can truly make a hell of heaven and a heaven of hell. Milton was right.

Dearest Paulo and friends,
Destruction breeds creation. This story perfectly expresses this. It is a lovely story. There is a time and place for everything. There is a time to be born, and there is a time to die. Similarly, there is a time for a young zen student to do his share, in doing so he is able to put his skills to use, and he is able to build confidence and pride in himself and his work after the temple is complete. The old master now becomes the teacher and guide to his students as they build. Even though the master is sad his work is destroyed he is reminded that nothing material is immortal, nothing material is that important, but the lessons he learnt building (creating) it will reside in him forever, and he is now given the opportunity to pass it on.
Thank you for being

aditya,
its never easy to let go of work that you’ve put you’re sweat and blood into. After you’ve created something amazing, you are amazed that you actually had it inside of you to create something so beautiful. But i’ve always felt that the personal growth inside of you is enough, after all materialism will only cause you to digress. I think we have to lead those sculptures into the ocean to remind us that its not really real. What is real is the change it brought about in you. And you and you alone will always know what you created, and just how great you are.
lots of love
Yajna
personally I find it very difficult to ‘destroy’ whatever i have invested my sentiments in; but I guess that is a lesson I need to learn. In India we have many festivals, where idols of our Gods are created with much labour and love, but at the end of the festivals which last for anything form 1 to 10 days, those idols are immersed in water. Those immesrsion processions, off and on I have been part of a few, have always been painful moments moments for me. these emotions which make us human, make us cry a lot also !!
Dear Paulo,
I really enjoyed today’s message. Some people stick to some objects and they forget that they are their properties. They swap the roles, they let to the objects be their owner. Challenges and changes make us mature and help us growing up faster but unfortunately some people prefer to spend the time without any movement and sticking to the old memorials.
Paulo, last Sunday i was surfing in the “net” and reading about Batimat 2007 that had in Paris last week. It’s the most important construction event in the world. When i saw the buildings of the future in Dubai,i told to myself:fantastic!!! They can you feel like inside dreams… Another thing: you’re singing with your friends, very good and interesting!!
