Do you think man is intrinsically bad?

by Paulo Coelho on December 21, 2007

In my book, The Devil & Miss Prym a foreigner arrives in a village to tempt a woman. I wanted to explore the fight of good and evil and would like to ask you:
Do you think man is intrinsically bad ?
Love,
Paulo

The Evil that we encounter serves to improve us, “to purify us.” We all have the ability to change and improve our lives and those of others around us by exemplary behaviour. There are countless ways to achieve such a goal. Although there are too many to mention, a good beginning for all of us would be to analyze the things upon which we focus. We tend to emphasize the things to which we pay attention. If we choose to focus on Evil, that is to say on negative things, on our limitations, our faults or those of others, we thus give importance to Evil and make it grow a little more because of us. This is exactly the same process if we focus on the Good, that is to say positive things about our capabilities, our strengths and those of others, then we participate in their development and Goodness will grow a little more thanks to us.

To categorise man “good” or “bad” is not justified because his actions are governed by a thought and that thought could be right or wrong. Even a murderer can be right from his perspective and he can give 100 reasons why he killed that person and his mother will surely believe him but before law he is a murderer. In whole life span each person plays diverse roles and he cant be perfect in all. So the good and bad elements are present in all. man is grey neither black nor white… as per the circumstances he manipulates things…

Man is not bad or good, man is good AND bad. Sometimes keeping from doing the wrong thing does not necessarily result in doing the right thing.

We are born as innocent little beings, I don’t think we are bad, I think we are influenced by our upbringing, by our culture by whomever. If we do something bad we eventually realize it and we change, we are fogiven.

However there are exeptions of maddness, for example Jeffery Dummer, who said if he was to be let free he is afraid he would kill again, so if you think about it he did have a concience of what he did, but he simply said he couldn’t control it, now how is that? I am not juding him because it is not up to me to do that I simply don’t understand it.

I work as a nurse, not on a psych unit but we do have cases where I see people gone mad, but that is another subject, that I think is beyond their control.
That is such a vast field to explore.

Thank you, always intruiding questions from one and only Mr.Coelho:)

Love always

man are not bad, as we see them they are ,as we feel them they are, as we realise them they are the most importent thing is that they contain a nice and beautiful soul inside them which ask them to have love, to conquer the whole world with hand in hand of their other half we need to be very much clean to see a man from inside, we need not to be very much curious to understand them as curicity aiways leads you to other directaion in other word it stops you from floatig like river besause they are woman inside there is no diffrent between man and woman as both of them living in this nice and very very very beutiful planet sharing the same soul which was gifted by god and which has been protecting by god since adam and eve”s era

It is our choices, that show what we are, far more than our abilities.Curiosity is not a sin. But we should exercise caution with our curiosity. An eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind

No. Only mankind can create the idea of bad and good. We are part of the universe and part of the world and part of nature. We cannot be judged by ourselves as that is an insult to God.

I think man is good intrinsiclly, but acording to his choices he can become bed. He can choose life or death.God asked us to choose life.

What’s bad?
Not to be nearer to Mother Nature…
Yes, man is intrinsically bad.

Man is neither born good or bad, but is born with enormous potential. In some instances of life, influences brought about by immeadiate surroundings and close ones will lead to a specific choice.
Yet in other circumstances (for eg. growing up)will leadto more awareness regarding choices one is capable of making in life, and thereby either good or bad will predominate:)
