Reminds me of that numbingly mind stopping moment when, in response to asking her if she thought the glass was half full or half empty, she said, “It depends on whether you’re pouring in or pouring out?”

Yeah, trying to read the signs may not be as simple as black and white, or colors, but of sound and smell and all sorts of other things!!! My God is tricky that way.
