Today’s Question by Aart Hilal

by Paulo Coelho on January 17, 2008

You said in the past that you can learn love in all its forms from women, and discipline from men. Which were the stages of love in your life as related to the women you have loved? And what about men who have marked your existence?

This is a very long answer, and I don’t want to simplify, so probably I will resume by saying that we need to understand that love justifies life, and that we have to fight with enthusiasm and discipline for people and things that are important to us, otherwise life will be like a Sunday afternoon, plenty of time, but the most boring day in the week.

‘You can learn love in all its forms from women…’

My comment on this statement:

My ex-wife reminds me of a cross between the possessed girl from the Exorcist (linda blair), and a female version of Hitler!

I guess I learnt a certain form of love from her. You could call it ‘anti-love’.

I think that you can say that men are usually more pragmatic and woman more romantic,
but I am fortunate to have a husband who is as much romantic as I am.

I guess you can never say it’s black or white.

Love from women and discipline from men?, I don’t understand that.

To a certain extent I think you can maybe differentiate between men and women on how they express love but each individual is unique and don’t always fall under the stereotype.

Traditionally men are less affectionate, more about making sure the family is provided for, rules are abided – but in my family my father is the one who was extremely affectionate and the one I could discuss problems with. He was definitely a disciplinarian but very forgiving. Mum the patient, kind, forgiving, tireless trooper.

Apart from my mother, the women in general in my family tend to be bossy, the men quiet and patient types.
