What do you think about reincarnation?

by Paulo Coelho on March 21, 2008

Brida
In Brida, a book of mine that will be published in various countries (from March onwards), I touch on the subject of reincarnation. Of course, theoretically, this goes against the dogmas of my religion (catholicism). But, even in the New Testament, there’s a moment in which Jesus clearly states that old souls reincarnate in new bodies: “But I say unto you, That Elias is come already, and they knew him not, but have done unto him whatsoever they listed. Likewise shall also the Son of man suffer of them.
Then the disciples understood that he spake unto them of John the Baptist.”
What’s your opinion about that?

This book was released on March 3rd.

How can anyone believe that we can learn everything we need to know in one lifetime? It would not make sense that a baby born in war torn Africa and a baby born in an affluent society would have the same chance to learn every lesson necessary to progress spiritually.

Because all reference to reincarnation was was removed by the Pope in the middle ages you will see no reference to it but that was done to exert more control on the people.

Breaking the cycle of death and rebirth is man’s purpose in this world and that can only be done through many many lifetimes here in which we learn how to wake up from the dream we are in and which we call reality.

According to the first principle of Physics – All things are made up of matter. Matter can neither be created nor destroyed. It only changes forms. Is it really a big deal, according to Modern Science also to believe in the ‘Eternal Truth according to Hinduism’ or just the philosophy of reincarnation?

I wanted to share a story Paulo. Maybe it will help others one day.

Many thoughts and questions again, after a recent death in the family of my kids dad. Our last four days of visits were wonderful, beautiful. He said that morning he was ‘going to heaven today’ (June 3), and did around 3 in the afternoon.

The night before you shared the heartfelt story about the passing of Christina’s father I was sharing a little story with my son. His dad had a sweet little dog named Penny while we were dating. After describing the house he was living in with Penny, it so happened that my son’s friend bought that very house a few years ago.

Immediately after reading the story about your father in law sending you a sign about helping people, the next night, I finished unpacking and went to put flight tickets into my treasure chest. (It helped so much, thankyou again and huge hugs), I looked down on the floor beside the chest and there was a bright shiny penny! My floors are always clean, I do not know how the penny got there. Stamped on the coin is ‘In God We Trust’. The date stamped on the penny is 2003, the year that I read The Alchemist for the first time. I sent a note to the kids to let them know that their dad is okay.

One treasure that the kids dad had was a bible. There were hundreds of passages in the New Testament neatly marked in it. It was a surprise to find he had a bible with him. He especially seemed to like the book of John. A few days prior to the memorial service, I shared a few of the verses with the pastor.

The night before the service, I was deep in contemplation about the poem ‘Invictus’, and shared it with the kids, knowing it would help them through. As well, the pastor spoke of being captain of one’s own soul.

Reincarnation was not a concept that anyone spoke about but read one article about it in Life magazine many years ago. We were taught that people went to heaven and that is it.

But sometimes, after death, people do reach out to comfort loved ones. So it’s not really a ‘belief’ in reincarnation but a truth I accept. For me and perhaps for others that have such experiences too, contact is extra special, deeply personal.

One of my wonderings is: How long is it from passing, until reincarnation happens? Looking forward to the publication in September of Aleph, very much.

Gratitude and Love,
Jane

I believe in reincarnation. We are trapped between time and space in our bodies. After our body expires, it evolves into something else. Just like our energy it takes on another body(human body, animal, trees, etc). We dont disapear, we evolve into something else. Thats why you ought to care for others, animals, trees and anything in the world.

I am a Hindu and its very easy for me to accept reincarnation without any issue cuz we’ve been taught/told of stories and myths from childhood…

Now its a different thing altogether. I am free to question but then no one likes these things. The pro-re-incarnation people feel their religious views are de-sanctified and the nay say-ers simply reject it for want of proof.

Right now spiritually what matters is a clear understanding of Karma and karmic baggage. Every action has a reaction/result. We dont experience all results as this is not one to one. Most reasons we can derive scientifically but we dont seem to be satisfied and take it upon our-self to either blame ourselves or others.

Animals dont seem to be bothered about paapa(sin)/punya(opp of sin in sanskrit for positive effects) We are concerned regarding heavens and hells based on our activities. Hindu tradition does not hold any physical or spiritual realm as permanent. Hence even heavens are temporary places subject to joy and sorrow.

Hence what is always stressed is the here and now. It is explained that when we are in the here and now concentrating without subjecting our desires we come in touch with divinity as pure Sat-Chit-Ananda Existence Consciousness Bliss. This is the Infinite potential available with us as ourself. Whichever loka(world – earth or heaven or hell) it may be has to have these 2 principles of Existence and Consciousness. The third principle is available as Infinite Bliss only for One with Knowledge of this Nature of the Divine or God or Brahman.

Hence this Knowledge is considered as most supreme.

In the light of the above explanation I have so far understood, re-incarnation takes a backfoot as we are taught not to dwell too much on the past or future as both are un-true or non-existant. Only the here and now is true and The Infinite as SatChitAnanda is available for any ‘thing’ alive! Hence the whole Universe is a Divine play of the Lord – ISha Vasyam Idam Sarvam

Death then reduces to going to sleep and birth becomes waking up and enjoying the Divine play again and again for the Knowledge-able One – Jnani! Hence the jnani becomes One with the Divine

Sorry in my enthusiasm I have made this a mini lecture

a good few years back i was fascinated by reincarnation and also with the idea of syncronicity. i think because in my heart i was deeply troubled with life and felt very inclined to look deep within . at that time i met a girl from nearby town where i was born (newcastle upon tyne ) and after only a short time of knowing her i became deeply attached and i some how thought that she was someone i knew before . at a much later point i had some very clear visions in my head of a time gone past (around the turn of 1900) and could see clearly the industrial landscape and the the terraces of houses around me and in those visions i saw this same girl with a baby who i knew to be my wife and child . i did think perhaps i was romanticising till one day in a local museum there on the wall was a map of the very place of my visions and every last detail of the scene i saw was on there i knew then what i had experienced were vivid past life memories so much made sense of the choices and desires i had in this life being based on experiences and attachments of a previous life i found a lot of healing and personal growth in that experience . there was several dreams both before i met the girl and after that gave clues of a past life i had lived .

we are all evolving souls which of us could really say im ready for heaven now . the physical realm is a dim reflection of the higher spiritual realms(as on earth so in heaven ).like evouloution in the physical realm life starts from a single tiny point a spark of life in cell form and then evouloution takes place. so it is with our spiritual selves till eventually it reaches human form and any one reaching to the spiritual knows they are the height of physical evouloution and further progress will be leaving the physical form behind to join the spiritual.evouloution is very beautiful when one looks at it is from this point of view and with a n idea of gods paitience, intelligence and will presiding over all . I am a BORN AGAIN CHRISTIAN

One body, one life, one God we are His spirit, His breath, His creation. Our spirits are eternal but we only get to make the most of this life ONCE! Then after our body returns to dust God chooses where our spirit will go. My father said, “How do we know if there is life after death, no one has ever come back to tell us.” I said to him ” Yes they have, Jesus came back exactly for that reason, to tell us of His plans for us after death”. We can be sure of this God cannot lie. Our tiny minds cannot comprehend the universe let alone GOD or His ways and thoughts. Love and Blessings xo ♥

in 1900 there was a billion of people on earth, in 2010 we are 7 billion. If 1 billion reincarnate, they would make 1 billion, not 7 billion.
Our atoms are millions of years old, and when we die we decompose to atoms. Our liquids will be taken by the plants around the graveyard or with the groundwater to rivers to sea to clouds to everywhere to feed new plants and animals. So we are part of a universum for ages.

Diane November 15, 2010 at 11:24 pm

could it not also be possible that new souls are still being created as we sit here? Is there a limit to the number of souls created for incarnation on Earth?

aksh November 16, 2010 at 4:31 am

One should not apply matematics to where it is not applicable; but if one ventures the path less travelled ( applying maths & logic to spirituality )one should be cautious, very cautious while drawing conclusions.

1 billion vs 7 billion, possible explainations mathematically
1. Souls can replicate, i mean like a phtocopier, each copy taking its own ‘destiny’
2. have u noticed no of plants and animals, insects have gone down, maybe they have moved up teh evolutionary ladder and are presently parading as humans, looking at animal like beahiour of many humans, one may suspect.

‘our’ atoms – teh atoms are not ours, nature has made it possible for them to be arranged for in ceratin manner so that ‘we’ can expereince ‘life’.

Amado Aoun December 2, 2010 at 12:15 am

who knows!!!
but do not forget the fact that while the 1billion are alive , they are making love and creating new lives before reincarnation , so it is logically to have 7 billion in 2010 ,

u can compare the human beiings to waves that are moved by wind and splashed and died in the sandy coast , than evaporated=spirit , than in the air there will be also contact between spirits that creates water AKA rain = life . Nature cannot live without water as such as plants and animals too , notice if ur plants in your garden dies , they will reincarnate at the same place too….. everything is moving in the universe , . Ps , try to study and have a deep understanding about those principles my dear Lars : Mentalism , Correspondence , Vibration , Polarity , Rythm , Cause & Effect , Gender,.
If anyone can enlight me more i would highly appreciate.

which binds man to the reincarnational wheel.”

I believe in reincarnation.
Scientifically speaking, we, matters are just trapped energies. and energy, cannot be created nor destroyed. Therefore, when a living thing dies, the energy inside it is just transformed into another living thing.

I truly believe in Reincarnation. This is a way of God to give every human a chance to fulfill what he/she was not able to achieve in the previous life & also to give us a chance to correct the mistakes we had committed in the previous life.

What you become in the next life totally depends on your Karma of this life………

I’ve found for a few years now that this question is difficult to answer; mainly because of one thing: How did we get to be so many? If, the souls choose their lives, families here before coming, as they choose to have certain experiences during their stay; and the human body comes with ego and needs to be inhabited by the soul before coming here; how did we get to be so many? how did so many many souls decide to come here in the past few thousand years compared to before?
This is a question that takes a lot of my reflection, because as such there are elements about reincarnation that i cannot deny and that are true to me, but as to any religion, there are questions that cannot be answered, and i think this might be one of those questions.
In any case i think more people should respect karma and that way humans would probably be much kinder to others.

I dont think i am here to find answers to all my questions, but to find and ask the questions.

I’ve thought a lot about this, and here’s what I’ve come up with. As humans we are confined to the limitations of space/time, and so when we consider reincarnation we assume the lives must occur in chronological order. If the soul exists beyond space/time, I see no reason why it needs to follow those rules in how it manifests itself. Your “next” life could be in ancient Rome or prehistoric Africa. Better yet, your soul could be simultaneously living multiple lives around the world at this very moment. Imagine what it would be like if you were to meet one them tomorrow!

As for why this particular time seems to be the most popular (so far), perhaps now is the time that offers the most opportunity for growth and learning. My personal intuition is that I have lived multiple lives during this particular time, and I keep coming back because I haven’t gotten it right yet.

Cheers!

Faith February 3, 2011 at 8:26 pm

Read a book called Journey of the Soul. It seems that our souls move up in ‘grades’after each life, just like at school, and they get to a point – a graduation if you like – when they are able to ‘create’ – just like the Great Creator, but on a smaller scale. So new souls are being created as they are needed.

moe May 28, 2010 at 9:14 pm

we all part of the same soul which is the soul of the universe,or you can call it allah or god or whatever was the name.and our souls after our bodies die,go to its origin which is god.and this soul goes back sometimes to other people in the future if a soul in the same aspects is needed to do changes.thats why elias came back and thats why jesus will come back and also any body is needed in a certain time. but this coming back should be in a phisical body.thats why when jesus came back after 3 days, was as an image.and the only difference between a holy soul and a regular one,is that the holy soul will be activated inside the human being after that human will have enough faith and love and is ready to take enough risk, and thats what the power is.and thats how were the prophets.so nobody was born as a holy man.

I do believe in reincarnation since studying genealogy. The latter helps me understand myself better, and some (not all) of the peculiarities or seemingly cellular sorts of understandings.
But have not studied past life regression, and the first time I heard of it was through Shirley MacLaine many years ago. I read her book ‘Out On A Limb’.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirley_MacLaine

One night while watching a movie, my daughter suddenly sat up and said ‘Remember mommy, we were supposed to go and see this together?’ I cannot recall the name of the movie, but Angel Falls was on the screen. She was in kind of a dreamy state, laying with her head in my lap. We had never discussed Angel Falls, or going to together. I am not sure she remembers this incident. But I just calmly stroked her hair and did not say anything.

So thankful you have written about this in Aleph, dear Paulo!

Love and Blessings, Jane xo

Life is a privilege not a right. Every incarnation is a chance we receive in order to evolve. A distinction has to be made between people who are spiritually dead and those who are not. Every time a person does an evil act his or her cellular frequency drops. If they go too far too often then that frequency will become ‘flat-line’ and they will be spiritually dead, and there will then be no soul to reincarnate again, ever, so that individual will literally have ceased to exist.

Honestly,I really don’t know, but I have ideas.
Well,if we have conscious, soul and body, it’s a simple miracle, because we can touch the world. It’s not only a school to learn the meaning of life, but to feel and have all kind of sentimental. We have just to fallow the law’s universe.
Reincarnation, belong to the human being imagination, and created limit to fly so high in the beautiful mind of the universe conception.

The soul is not immortal (Hes 18:4). The soul is the life force and do have a DNA too. Everything has a frequency and negativity makes the frequencies drop. A very negative and evil person, throughout incarnations, will “kill” his/her own soul by poisoning it with negative vibrations. So I say “evolve”! Don´t become a disgrace to evolution killing your own soul! If the life force (vibrations that keep the soul existing) will drop too low the life force will just no longer vibrate or exist. Back into blank matter you go! Worse than a nightmare is the nightmare from which you cannot wake.

I truly believe in reincarnation. And I can tell you that I know a lot of my own previous lives.
In my daily work – I am homeopath, psychotherapist and I am working on alternative medicine, reincarnation is a part of my work. And I may dicover so wonderful things by using this tool, this way to help people getting out of s.c.”prisons” they were put in from painful situations which are still in the memory of our souls and even cells. Once you made the experience you will never doubt.
Universalcommunication in its inner meaning stands for all ways of communication that is possible in this univers. Including reincarnation.
Religion comes from the latin word re ligio, that means leading back to ourselves. Reincarnation, as Paulo mentions, is not something openly discussed in our christian churches. Why? Becaus when we truely follow our own ways back to ourselves (religio!) we become independent, free, no longer manipulated by anybody and we will find out that God is us!

Reply

Marie-christine February 9, 2010 at 10:46 pm

I also believe in re-incarnation.
“Leading back to ourselves” is the only way, sadly it does not seem to fit the way “religion” is “selling it” to us… as you said “because when we truly follow our ways back to ourselves (religio) we become independent, free , no longer manipulated by anybody and we will find out that God is us!”

Anne, my Yoga teacher, hands us a sheet of paper to-day. with something to meditate on:
“Le bonheur c’est nous meme.” “Happiness is ourselves”
It concurs with what you are saying.
Merci Anne, Thank you Anne and Ulrike.

Salud. Espero no haber ofendido conciencias, no busco jamás ofender, solo hallar la Luz. Dios los guíe.

Reincarnation gives an answer to the question (is GOD a just GOD? that gives the same opportunities to all his children?)

Leaf May 25, 2009 at 7:31 am

Didn't they also ask John the Baptist if he were Elijah?
How come? If not reincarnation?
I have chosen to believe that these are indications of reincarnation in the Bible, though when I have tried to discuss such with other Christians, the best I have been offered is a polite;
that's not definitive proof.
(why any believer should need definitive proof???)
there is a growing number of 'Christians' who are rapidly moving away from being told what to think, how to think, when to think….the ones who say things like;
yes, I'm a Christian….but i don't have to go to church to prove it and vice-versa, going to church once a week doesn't make one a Christian….being one everyday is what 'sorts the sheep from the goats'

There are so many, many, many many!! different Christian establishments, all arguing and back-stabbing each other!! why the *heck* not just decide for myself?
I think maybe that's how/why i came up with the Spaceman-god theory
because if you read Genesis and Revelation absolutely literally, it bloody well fits!
But, I daresay, any bible scholar who's worth his salt, is going to object and say; But you can't take Genesis nor Revelation literally….
and I'd say; So, you want me to take Jonah, Samson, Moses, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, blah blah etc, absolutely literally, all of it, in fact, except the first and last books?? yeah, okay.
But that doesn't matter – I'm just a Star Trek freak lol! I'm not trying to persuade people to join my religion and I'm not going to argue with anyone about anything (on a good day…) ESPecially not about Jesus, The Messiah, Prince of Peace,
because I'm not afraid to be wrong
I'm not afraid to be childish
I am afraid I've wandered far from the original point!
But that's two points in one – you know i was not literally afraid…and we all have equal capacity to prove a point, if we put our minds to it, but if that means that too many people are arguing about the bible, then what is the point??
That's where I've been for the most part, recently, again, as we do;
Okay, God, remind me again, what was the point?
I think I'll just quietly go back now,
thank you
Love
xxxx

I fear paradise will be boring after some time – maybe exept being commanded as “Angel for very special missions” – this could be interesting. Incarnation could be an exciting adventure I can imagine. However it will be, I hope it will be a good surprise!

i have not gone into the depths of the existence of reincarnation…but sometimes…i do enjoy to think of another real life…where we are sleeping and dreaming our present life..isn’t that possible too….just as we dream…the things existing and those not existing…isn’t it possible that our life now ,is a dream too….and when we die..we actually wake up from the dream to the real world we are really living in……i love the way my thoughts wander sometimes.

Well I think the question of karma is an important one, and this is linked to the concept of reincarnation.

There is much that we do not consciously understand about the afterlife, but being aware of our actions and reactions is key – the universe is a mirror. Every single thought and every action we make affects the universe, whether or not our individual consciousness, as we know it today, is reborn as another individual consciousness. Time is probably also an illusion, so our actions and therefore karma, spread backwards and forwards in time.
