Today’s Question by Aart Hilal

If there is a saying “Explosion of Latin American literature” : what would be the relation between you and the tide (or phenomenon) of literature?

I do believe that the so called explosion of Latin American literature was, in the years 1980, responsible for a kind of text that does not separate the reality that we can see (like seas, tables, or papers) from the reality that we cannot see (feelings, spirituality, love) but that affects our life on the same level. That’s why this movement was called “fantastic realism”. As for me, I am more concentrated in writing my books than in connecting my literature with this or that school or tradition. I leave this for the scholars.

    Great attitude!

Scholars are like art critics, they can always tell you what’s in the mind of the artist, and what school of art is it from. But can they produce art themselves? I don’t need anyone to tell what is, or is not art, or to tell me how to “feel” about it. Feeling, that’s what is about, whether a positive or negative reaction, as long as it produces a reaction, it’s art.

I do rely a bit more on food critics. I’m not a chef, so I’m not bothered by them. If I want to go to a nice restaurant, I do search for recommendations. I don’t like surprises here, but I don’t always follow the so call “experts” advice. I read what other “common” people have written about it.

If critics gives the time they offer to classify, in creating, world would be better.
Indeed, the writer generally don’t think about nothing but the story he’s writing.

    Blessings.
