The sound of OM

Interesting article - sent to me by Reine Willing:

According to Hinduism the whole universe started from the sound of OM. The new discovery seems to corborate it.

Earth gives off a relentless hum of countless notes completely imperceptible to the human ear, like a giant, exceptionally quiet symphony, but the origin of this sound remains a mystery.

Now unexpected powerful tunes have been discovered in this hum. These new findings could shed light on the source of this enigma.

The planet emanates a constant rumble far below the limits of human hearing, even when the ground isn’t shaking from an earthquake. (It does not cause the ringing in the ear linked with tinnitus.) This sound, first discovered a decade ago, is one that only scientific instruments — seismometers — can detect. Researchers call it Earth’s hum.

Investigators suspect this murmur could originate from the churning ocean, or perhaps the roiling atmosphere. To find out more, scientists analyzed readings from an exceptionally quiet Earth-listening research station at the Black Forest Observatory in Germany, with supporting data from Japan and China.

Different types

In the past, the oscillations that researchers found made up this hum were “spheroidal” — they basically involved patches of rock moving up and down, albeit near undetectably.

Now oscillations have been discovered making up the hum that, oddly, are shaped roughly like rings. Imagine, if you will, rumbles that twist in circles in rock across the upper echelons of the planet, almost like dozens of lazy hurricanes.

Scientists had actually expected to find these kinds of oscillations, but these new ring-like waves are surprisingly about as powerful as the spheroidal ones are. The expectation was they would be relatively insignificant.

New thinking

This discovery should force researchers to significantly rethink what causes Earth’s hum. While the spheroidal oscillations might be caused by forces squeezing down on the planet — say, pressure from ocean or atmospheric waves — the twisting ring-like phenomena might be caused by forces shearing across the world’s surface, from the oceans, atmosphere or possibly even the sun.

Future investigations of this part of the hum will prove challenging, as “this is a very small signal that is hard to measure, and the excitation is probably due to multiple interactions in a complex system,” said researcher Rudolf Widmer-Schnidrig, a geoscientist at the University of Stuttgart, Germany.

Still, a better understanding of this sound will shed light on how the land, sea and air all interact, he added.

Researcher Dieter Kurrle and Widmer-Schnidrig detailed their findings March 20 in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

  • This is an interesting article, indeed and I believe in it!
The primordial sound, when the universe was created, was AUM pronounced as OM, the Logos. A is the energy of the left channel, that of the past, of pure desire, U represents the energy of the right channel, of action, of the future and M the one of the center or middle channel, of the present. Pronounced as one syllable they become One.
This sound represents the first thing that was created, innocence spreading everywhere and its symbol is the swastika but with a clockwise orientation, towards evolution, not in opposite direction, like Hitler and the Nazi transformed it, to represent destruction. It is also represented in the structure of the charbon atom.
From AUM comes Amen which means the same thing, but modern people lost its primordial significance, of eternal innocence and love, alpha and omega, the cycle of beggining and end, the eternity.
When I meditate I pronounce the sounds separately A-U-M for each channel of energy and then Aum pronounced as OM which creates a hum inside, vibrates according to the Earth’s vibration and the whole Creation. Mother Earth is alive and has energy, I am convinced because I feel Her vibrations, her compassion and protection.
It is interesting that in Romanian OM means “human being,” maybe as a remembrance referring to the principle of the primordial Creaation, the Man, innocent and pure.

    Lots of love,

  • one does not have to be religious for being close to god, one is religious when one is close to god, not even close to god, for God is everywhere, when one has turned his/her attention towards god ! when one is focused on God, then one is relegious. mere rituals don’t make religion ! one does not have to be a religious person to head any so called religious isntitution, in fact one needs to be more political than religious for such a position! do u have any doubt how would christ be treated if he wanted to meet the Pope presently !

  • Hi Yagna ! Friends !

As agni says, we don’t have to understand, we can just feel HIS ‘doings’. a famous scientist, i forget his name, once said, ‘the more i understand, the more this unverse appears like an idea’. physical manifestations ( that which we see and experience with our five senses, includes earth, the physical part of it )are based on /woven around non physical entities ( are there any such thing ), the first contact on physical plane happens with sound, and to human ears it sounds like AUM or hmmmm in case one is not fully focused on it.

as agni says, we may leave the ‘understanding’ part to scientists, surely they will come up with some damn useful applications once they understand it, rest of us can just feel it, have fun.

and ya speaking of hinduism, 5000 years old, does it not reflect poorly on the followers of hinduism ( us ! ) that even though all knowledge was made available to us long ago, we could not do better than merely reciting it ( like machines, although that way at least the knowledge got preserved for seekers )

  • Agnieszka,

I agree with you :) I know that no matter the religion, the belief or even if you choose to just listen to your own heart and experiences, are all different paths of to God. Although our journeys may be different, our destination remains the same. It is merely a matter of finding what suits you best, and what you’re most comfortable with. I know very well that one doesn’t have to religious to be close to God, i’m not really, but i love. And i believe that is the first step to God. However, i do find learning about religions, common beliefs and philosophy, rather interesting, and it really excites me when science coincides with it :) Especially when i’ve grown up with this culture :) I enjoy the way you write, have you thought of having your own blog?

    Annie,
    Love the lyrics :)

    Liara,
The mantra the buddhists use, it is very powerful :)
And your very right about perception…

Lots of love to you all

  • Dear Yajna,

    What is religion?
Isn’t it in everything around us?
Isn’t it in all we do, all we think, all we love?
In every person, every smile, every tear..?

    Like Khalil Gibran writes:
“If you want to know God, don’t try to solve the puzzles; look around and you’ll see how He plays with children…”

We don’t have to understand… but we can.. feel..

  • Oh i forgot to say one last thing, what fascinates me more, is that the Hindu religion is over 5000 years old. It is one of the oldest religions on earth, and only now, 5000 years later does science point it the direction of one of its greatest teachings…

  • Aditya and friends,

    Hello :)
I like what you claimed- i thought of it too.
What if the natural forces, or one of the threads that forms ‘the universe to conspire’ for us, that interlinks us with the earth, the universe, the trees, other people, and pretty much every soul is connected by this sound. What if, it is a sound of our souls? Hmmm.. It could explain how we feel so connected with things sometimes- like our souls are actually talking, yet we may not have heard or said a word. It could explain how we can connect with mother earth and all of its creatures. But thats just a thought..

So far science speculates the earth hummms, water particles can possibly be connected to thought and our souls weight 21 grams. All interesting, very interesting…

    Lots of love

  • Dearest Paulo and friends,

As alexandra mentioned, i too find it fascinating when science and religion head towards an agreement.

I must admit, my entire life i’ve been using the sound ‘AUM’. Besides starting and ending it with nearly every prayer in a traditional mantra, I’ve found just saying it calms me incredibly. At a young age we were taught to close our eyes, put our hands together, take a deep breath and as breathe out slowly, resite the word “AUM” - all in one breath. We were taught to say it 3 times and then begin whatever we were doing. I’m not a very religious person, I find it interesting to learn of religions and their teaching, but i am very much a spiritual character. Truthfully, just resiting AUM, in any sitution, from being scared or being stressed, just pulls me together. It is one of the most powerful, yet very simple words/sounds that i feel just reaches inside me and gives me peace. I feel, so much more closer to God, so much more focused and in lessed than a mintue i swear i feel my faith in myself and the universe is revived. I love it :) If you are reading this, and you haven’t tried it before, just do it.. and on your last AUM, pray and tell God whatever you want or even meditate- see if it makes a difference to you.

I have read that in the words AUM, various religions- hinduism, jainism, and buddhism use it. All and all, AUM is said to be the primordial sound that was present at the creation of the universe. It is said to be the original sound that contains all other sounds, all words, all languages and all mantras. In Hinduism is said that each letter represents the 3 Gods- namely Brahma (Creation), Vishnu (Preservation and Balance) and Shiva (destruction)- the cycle of life. What makes things more interesting is, in sanskrit it is described as - “to make a humming or droning sound.”

I know that the science is progressing and that we are far from knowing the answers, but for me, knowing what it feels like, and knowing the power of these words, i seriously won’t be suprised if it proves that AUM is a sound that connects every soul on earth and the earth itself (and even the universe). I must say i found ths article very fascinating and the entire concept is pretty awesome- if i don’t say so myself :)

    Thank you for being

today after a long spell i feel a vibration that is us,
sometimes i muse that we could all be small planets inside gods head,
and all the sounds we perceive are his digestive rumbles, funny eh?now that all of that all of us agree ( the sceintists, holy men, etc, etc..
agree dont you think itz high time to stop all these neuclear testing, powerplants coz, just imagine one explosion is enough to put our deat mother earth out of orbit,
i strongly feel that this is the true reason behind this globalwarming ,
    earth has developed a wobble…
itz time to calculate where we use the next force to cancel the dumb american efforts that put us here in the first place,

  • We are all instruments in this music of life…
from the lyrics of a song of mine..
    …..

We are instruments in this song of life
If only we werent so blind, to see what lies behind

Dont be afraid , dont be afraid
    Just listen to the rain
Drops of your soul, they re your song
    Nothing is inane

We are playing our parts in this melody of life
If only we werent so deaf to hear this music of life.

Dont be afraid , dont be afraid
    Just listen to the rain
Tears of your heart, songs of the ocean
    Will alleviate your pain

    (in the background)
And you ll hear the music of life…
And we ll hear the music of life……

    Love to all of you

I just want to add that Ananda Church of Self-Realization has a site. It is
    ananda.org
For anybody interested, Torkom Saraydarian´s books are available thru hius trust in California, as far as I know. The ISBN nr of volume 2 of the book I mention above is ISBN 87-875-0571-1 in the Danish version that I have here. I know he has written extensively in English as he lived and taughed a lot in California. He was born in the Middle East.

    Dear Paulo Coelho

The one most extensive theoretical explanations of the OM and AUM that I know of is in the second volumes of two books that I cherish much. They are Psyche & Psychism 1 and 2 by Torkom Saraydarian. In volume 2, chapter 43 is called “The sacred sound OM”. THe other part of the theoretical insight I have received about OM is from Ananda Church og Self-Realization, started and led by J Donald Walters, a direct disciple of Paramahansa Yogananda.

At Ananda in California with whom I have had the big blessing to live and learn from, I´ve also learned about OM in a practical way. To my beginner´s experience OM is the manisfestation on the human level of the Divine sound. It can be experienced as an inner reality in higher consciousness in meditation. It is a profound, liberating experience to say one thing in an area of life where I am short of words..

I´m sure OM is a Divine reality that is accesable thru other true spiritual paths as well as I´m sure God´s reality is the same behind all paths. I´m describing the 2 sources here that have opend my onw experience of OM´s reality.

I think everything that we perceive as physical also is energetical and vibrates with lower or higher frequencies. The vibrations have their particular sound, so it makes perfect sense to me that Earth has it own sound as well.

    with my respect,

    Sibila

  • I am happy to dicover once again a sort of agreement from science to esoteric ideas.I agree with great part of budism ,even if I am not a budist .I have had the ocasion to hear that sound murmured by monks, and I cannot denie the hipnotic power.Everything is linked in some way.Who knows how many other things should find an scientific explanation to?

  • one more line of thinking which may be explored -

that the ‘hum’ sound ( quite close to om ) is not caused by these natural forces, but it is the cause on which earth with all its forces are caused.

  • I think its Mother Earths singing to us ,gentling humming and those who hear this vibration and sense it, and naturally cycle with her rhythm are tunned in . Blessings Tania

  • Fascinating…
The sounds, the vibrations, the..voice of Earth, of….Universe.
Hmm… if we could only hear..
Everything around us…talks to us; the earth, the moon, the sun, our heart.
Life is full of sounds, full of enchanted moments, infinite thoughts.
What is life? What is the Universe? What is love?
    Is love..the Universe?
No matter how far we go, no matter how deep we dig, we’ll never know.
We may get a glimpse of this..truth, but we will never grasp all of it.
    It is the Unknown.
    And it’s magical, exciting.
Every one of us, like this Earth, this Universe is full of unexpected…sparks, waiting to be discovered, waiting to ignite…the whole truth about…LIFE,.. LOVE.

    How can we ever comprehend..
    this world..
    this life..
    this feeling..?
