Copyleft or Copyright?

Today, In Digg – I’ve opened a profile there in order to digg news – came upon this following one on copyright.

Record companies sue Project Playlist on copyright

NEW YORK (Reuters) – Nine major record labels filed suit against an online music provider on Monday, accusing Project Playlist Inc of a “massive infringement” of their copyrights to the songs of artists such as U2 and Gwen Stefani.

Project Playlist enables its users to easily find, play and share music with others for free, according to the suit filed in U.S. District Court in Manhattan.

The website compiles a vast index of songs on the Internet and users can “quickly and easily search the index for recordings by their favorite artists. At the click of a mouse, Project Playlist instantly streams a digital performance of the selected recording to the user, who can listen to it on his or her computer or mobile device,” the lawsuit said.

The Beverly Hills, California-based company, an affiliate of KR Capital Partners LLC, also allows its users to embed their personalized playlists on social network sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Blogger, the lawsuit said. The record companies said projectplaylist.com gets more than 600,000 daily users, nearly 9.5 million average page views per day.

  • Dearest Paulo and friends,

    i agree with what you all said, but we must not forget that greed exists. The way i see it, the artists and the record companies are billionaires or millionaires over and over again. Its not like they are starving and people are taking their bread away! Seriously! Thats why i admire Paulo, cause he’s more interested in people seeing who he is than taking their money. His got enough to live comfortably.. And thats great. I think if one day, if i ever had to be famous, i’d want to be like that.

    Thank you for being

  • Yes, Paul, haha – i stand as testimony to my own statement and also to your own observations. ie, I love my art, but there’s no money in it….no-one can afford my blood, sweat, tears, not to mention the occaisional stay at the Hotel California aka psychiatric ward – (and that’s not vanity that’s practical housekeeping)
    and I never really want to part with any of my pieces anyway because it’s like parting with part of myself. God bless my scanner; it wasn’t here when I started out.
    I was a born dreamer
    but I always had one phrase on my mind
    “Most artists never make money whilst they’re alive – but I can keep on painting and hope that some lucky bugger makes a fortune when I’m gone” (I have an heir now, and that means much much more.)
    and while am at it (blah blah blah)
    on the other hand
    My ex-husband once asked accusingly;
    What if I took all your paintings and burned them all??
    - I replied;
    What if? No-one can take away the experience or the fact that i did them.
    and that’s the indescribable part
    like Love
    and all the different ways we feel it and show it.

  • I don’t think it’s most artist artists have a problem with free music download from the Internet, but it’s mostly the record labels, and the lawyers working for them that have a problem. The artists get most of their money from concerts, they are in the business of producing art, and art not shared is not art. The record labels are in the business of making money and so are the lawyers, so they’re protecting their own interest not the interest of the artist. Besides take for example Paulo Coelho. He makes money from selling books, doesn’t he? Then why have them on this site for you to download them for free? If you want to have his books in your library, you’ll buy them, and having them on this website gives opportunity to people that are not familiar with his work to get acquainted with it. I think the same is true for music. People will buy the books, and they will buy the cds regardless of the fact that they can listen or read them online for free. The same was said when the VCRs came out,” people are going to stop going to the movies”, but movies are still grossing millions of dollars. Record labels are also making tons of money, don’t feel sorry for them. I think record labels are just greedy!

    Then I guess there are not too many true artists out there then LEAF, or did they just all happen to get caught up in that commercial vicious circle ;-) Anyone who says they are not in it for the money is a dreamer and if in fact they are, they certainly won’t get very far in the business..unfortunately..”That’s the way it is”..and I believe they should all be paid for their work, because here’s no such thing as a free lunch ;-)

  • Yes fully agree ..if you get paid to do something you love or your passion then yes its a bonus !! but you have to wonder if artists would still do what they love if no one ever knew there name or seen there faces ..would it still drive some of them ..say you only ever heard songs and never knew who sang it or what they looked like ..it has always made me wonder would people truly carry on without the fame ..Blessings Tania

  • I don’t see how that one hurts anyone more than stuff and videos you find on youtube…. :S

  • Damn, I’d hate to miss out on Gwen Stefani ;)

  • So cool, what you wrote Leaf, i agree :-)
    Thank you Paulo,
    love

  • Well, I hope they don’t succeed in closing Project Playlist – I love it. Music while you blog!
    Nice, the way you added a link, Paulo,
    copyleft, copyright, copy right down the middle, or behind the back….what the heck!!??
    A true artist does it for Love – money is just a bonus.
