Today, I was impressed to find out in Digg that the U.S. has Nelson Mandela on their terrorist list.

WASHINGTON — Nobel Peace Prize winner and international symbol of freedom Nelson Mandela is flagged on U.S. terrorist watch lists and needs special permission to visit the USA. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice calls the situation “embarrassing,” and some members of Congress vow to fix it.

The requirement applies to former South African leader Mandela and other members of South Africa’s governing African National Congress (ANC), the once-banned anti-Apartheid organization. In the 1970s and ’80s, the ANC was officially designated a terrorist group by the country’s ruling white minority. Other countries, including the United States, followed suit.

Because of this, Rice told a Senate committee recently, her department has to issue waivers for ANC members to travel to the USA.

Members of other groups deemed a terrorist threat, such as Hamas, also are on the watch lists.
Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff says “common sense” suggests Mandela should be removed. He says the issue “raises a troubling and difficult debate about what groups are considered terrorists and which are not.”

  • Hi,Paulo and everyone,
can someone please tell me the name of the article(or where I can find it), that appeared here I think on 21. 22. or 23. of April(from the New York Times) about that psychologist who made an experiment with 12 students, when he put 6 of them in a sort of jail, and the other 6 were their guardians, but the experiment lasted 6 days because the” prisoners” had nervous breakdown, it was at one of universities in the US, it was about the topic “are people good or evil”. He tried to explain the behaviour of amercan soldiers in Irak, when they tortured prisoners.

    thanks:)

  • Hi people, I do understand your disbelief how someone can put person like Mandela on the list of terrorists. But you shouldn’t be amazed, despite everything, you really shouldn’t. I actually can see why and how some people behave. At the first moment you might think it doesn’t make sense, but at the deeper look you might find out something you know very very very well…they are humans, with mistakes, humans who wanted to test their possibilities… some of them do that in purpose of personal benefit, but some of them just can’t resist to try it. And over all, I’m actually happy this happend… you might think I’m crazy…well, in fact I can see the bigger picture of it. Mandela is a man very well known for his deeds, good deeds, he is a good example to show people how manipulative media can be, and not only media. His example can open eyes to many people. And that’s good… every cloud has silver lining :)
Bad things can have a good reason which even might be in hands of higher forces..
    with eternal love

  • Paulo,
just to make it clear, when I previously wrote about stupidity and fear I ment it for those who put Mandela on terrorist’s list, it was in no way ment for Maria-M.
    Love
    Luci

  • Dear Paulo,
I just replied to Maria-M on your blog about terrorists and “necessity” of war (from 30.04.) and it make me sad how easily people can be manipulated by mass media. In your book Like Flowing River I read yours “Thank you President Bush” and I wish she read it too.

There are no words to describe stupidity, fear,or else, that moves such persons to act in that way, well Christ was preaching and was feared too !

Thank you for pushing me through your books into your universe, for the feeling not ot be alone.

Go on with your questions, to open questins in our mind and heart.

    With lots of love,
    Luci

P.S. Hope to see you in Dubrovnik, I am one who does not give up

  • just: do not go to the USA.
Live is to short do something good:-)

    god love us all!!!

    thomas

  • The best: never go to USA!!!!!
live is to short, so do something good :-)

  • My God, …
    This makes me so sad.

Forces without light misleading people who live in fear,…how dark would it be when there wouldn’t be the warriors of light?

  • I can not believe it .How is that possible?I think in the end the only one who is not a terrorist should be Bush.

  • This story reveals its wise not to simply believe everything you read. Just because someone tells you something, doesn’t mean you should automatically take it as gospel either. Living in a physical body offers each of us many different opportunities to grow. One of my favorite responses to what I’m told relates to a story about a Zen master who didn’t permit external events to disrupt his inner peace of mind. No matter what he was told, he always replied, “Is that so?”

  • Dearest Paulo and friends,

oh wow.. Look.. Whats george scared of? Maybe when nelson mandela visits the country, he’ll strap c4 to himself and blow up everything, after spending half his life in jail, fighting for in my country. See all of that was a lie.. His true aim at 90 and his whole life me course, is to steal a plane, and fly it into and blow up the white house. Seriously america.. Get over yourself!!! The entire world does not revolve around you!
I was utterly appalled when i read this article. Nelson Mandela is nothing but an unbelievable man. He is a man of peace, and one of the greatest leaders of all time. I can’t believe that the americans have him, of all the people in the world, and members of the ANC marked as threats!! I know members of the cabinet, i know the foreign minister and his deputy, and i can tell you.. I can’t see them blowing anything up or hijacking a plane! Aziz Bahad is the deputy and his father fought with nelson mandela and my grandfather. Thats only one man i mentioned..If you meet these people, and if you know them, you’ll see they’re certainly not a threat to anyone!! What do they care anyway of harming america? We busy dealing with our own problems here! I am extremely offended because i live in South Africa, i know how the ANC fought to bring equality, and democracy. The ANC and every other black or rather non white party, during Apartheid days were deemed ‘terrorists’ as they fought against a racist government. Anyone who goes against the goverment is named a terrorist these days!!Its been 14 years since, and we’ve grown as a country and its obvious to the world..so why hasn’t america acknowledged this?! Oh wait! Maybe George Bush didn’t know this revelation took place.. Maybe he was too busy playing golf or going to war for no reason. Nelson Mandela, when he was released from prison, spoke to the nation me peace. Not of killing all the white people in the country for revenge, not of negativity, not of war. He was a man who asked people to forgive and love, who brought all colours together. Unity in diversity. If anything, America should learn from him.. In fact, having nelson mandela walk on their soil, is a blessing! This article just upset me.. Have people forgotten.. The land, any land, belongs to the people.. Regardless of our man made nationalities, we are ALL part of this earth. I swear.. The world will be a far far better place if old georgie boy was a 10th of nelson mandela.

    Thanks for sharing this article.
    Thank you for being.

  • This is..outrageous! and so shameful. It is hard to find the words. How such a person like Nelson Mandela can be on the list?
The world is getting crazer by the minute.
Maybe I shouldn‘t say that, because I live here, but in this country many things are upside down, distorted and it is done with the smile on the face.
And the craziness about terrorism – sky high. Now almost anybody can be perceived as a terrorist and that is twisted and sad.
Of course the people is what creates the country and they are great, kind, fantastic, but there are so many things that don’t look good at all, especially in the politics.
