My Keynote Message for the Meeting on Youth@the Crossroads - a future without violent radicalization

Dear readers,
Below you may find a text that I wrote recently for the Unesco about the radicalization of Youth.

When I was invited by the Director-General of UNESCO (…) I felt a great deal of responsibility and, I will not hide it, grief.

(…)

Even before sitting at my desk to write this text, sad images started to crowd my mind. I could see an army of children, bare foot, walking down a dusty path that would lead them to their certain death. I could see some of them actually smiling, holding carelessly their light AK-47s, and heading towards war.

(…)

I keep on seeing these images and the feeling of powerlessness grips me. What can one do against a rising number of children soldiers? Of children slaves?

(…)

    Dearest Paulo,

I admire that you recognise that pathetic reality of the situation of millions of youths over the world. There are countless problems, and it seems that many of them just go round in circles- for example, poverty. Poverty itself leads to violence, criminal behaviour, being sold as slaves, having to work being children, which leads to lack of a proper education and well, its an endless circle of problems as you know.

My question to you though, has UNESCO identified the specific problems, in the specific areas with regard to the youth? have they got a plan in place to improve the lives of some these children? And what is their stratergy?

    Thank you for being
    Yajna

You know, i look around me sometimes, and i want to do is do more. i want to make the difference tht i was born to do, and truthfully i know its not possible to rid the world of violence or crime or the ideal idea of ’saving the world’ - i just want to do stuff so that atleast the people around me get help. I must admit though, it can be rather overwhelming, and well, im not in a position to do all that i want to just yet. Hopefully i will have the power and influence to do so one day :)

    Lots of love

Agora além de educarmos as crinças temos que pensar em “reeducação adulta”… porque alguns adultos estão a desaprender a ser humanos…

Yes it’s a question of power that won’t survive when we all would act with love as you did with sharing your love in the words you wrote.
Every day is a day which makes me aware of violence that kills the spontanety of a child with the gun of power, which shoots in every direction where love goes…without knowing that they kill mother earth who lives in all of us…and thus kill ourselves.
Yes we have to safe the children by loving each other and that starts indeed with love and yourself.

Whenever you stop for a moment to think of all those children, whenever you read or watch what is happening around the world, you just feel so..empty, so…helpless, and so ashamed, for yourself, and for the whole world to let this happen. You may try, you may even do something, but still it’s not enough, never, because with one positive act there comes two or more so negative, so tragic, that you just cannot cope with that.
We go on living because around us we may not see this, but it’s there and it can only shows how..we became immune, that is so… sad.

There’s this sign in Aushwitz Birkenau in Poland (concentration camp from war world II):

“People prepared this fate for people”

children..the most beautiful people in the world.. and we make them abandon everything about being a child.. so poverty, violence and unhappiness in this world..i feel it like putting a knife in my throat..
Dear Yajna, i really hope that you someday can make this difference..i hope i ll do that too…
    Love to all of you.
