To be believed to be seen

by Paulo Coelho on May 23, 2008

Recently I found this beautiful quote by the English poet – Ralph Hodgson

“Some things have to be believed to be seen”

Do you believe in this? Why?

It would be interesting to see your personal list of things that have to be believed to be seen.

Love,
Paulo

Y mejor no sigo.

A very beautiful quote, bumped into it in my schoolbook, looked it up and ended up here =).
I think there’s a little bit of something that needs to be believed to be seen in each one of us.

Veronica decides to die is one of the most beautiful books I’ve read.

Thank you so much Mr. Coelho
- and greetings from Finland!

“Some things have to be believed to be seen” after thinking about it I agree.

I believe in angels, I believe everyone has his/her own angel or guide, but not everyone believes it, and thus never asks for help or advice from them. I do not know if you know of Sylvia Brown who is a very famous author and psychic here in the USA. She has written “A Book of Angels” and describes all the different angels in it, some that are always around us, some that need to be called by our angels to come and guide us if our angels need help. She describes them even by the color of their wings. She talks of agnels as pure love, because they are heavelny they have never been born therefore they don’t know our world. Very intersesting book if you ever come across it.

I do believe that our spirits live on after death, therefore I dream of my father often, he comes in my dreams sometimes smiling sometimes he doesn’t talk and I know what that means, sometimes takes me few days to realize. I made a pact with my father that if he dies first he will let me know he is okay and he has, through dreams.

I believe because it could not be otherwise, I mean knowing someone and poof all of the sudden they gone. I can not grasp that concept, so I believe we go on in a world that is a mirror of this world but 100% better as Sylvia Brown talks in her books.

Thank you Mr.Coelho
Love always

believed to be seen, i can agree with you because you have to be and believe first what you will to be and all starts in the mind and the heart… you cant say

Mr. Coehlo,

There is only one thing that I’m still struggling to believed in…to be seen..ever since a child. And that is My Angel.

That’s why when I read your book The Valkyries, I was inspired. :D

And it may seem stupid because I never seek for a soulmate, yet I always find myself seeking for my Angel. Can there be a reason why I never find myself searching for a soulmate (like most people do) instead seek for an angel???

And I don’t know why, but even though I do strongly believe in angels,I still feel like I don’t have one.

I even feel like my angel is in this world…and I need to find my angel.

I wish you could share me some insights. Thanks.

Everything in life begins with an idea. We think or feel something (sometimes we are told by past generations or books) and then we decide if we accept it, in our mind first. If we do, then the world with align itself with us to ensure we see what we desire, if we reject it, the same force will work to ensure we recieve confirmation that our choice is correct. This is a matter of the mind… mind over matter… the power of thought is the most powerful… it can open our eyes and make us blind….

good day sir,

the zahir was the first novel i have read..

in the ending part, esther said “i’m pregnant”.. i looked at it as she’s just testing her husband..

but sir i know this is just a very shallow thinking of mine. i can’t easily grasp ideas.

sir, if you don’t mind, i just want to know if the pregnancy is true. i can’t imagine her to be pregnant when in fact she still loves her husband. i know there’s something in the statement, but i can’t grasp it. i want to know what does it mean.

please sir, if you don’t mind.

thank you sir for the book! it made me think that i must not continue being a “prisoner of my past”.

Many readers were shocked. But when I wrote the book, she was pregnant from someone else. Love goes beyond that, and accepts everything.

Paulo Coelho is a great author. I’ve read Alchemist 5 times and every time I really enjoyed reading the book.

“Some things have to be believed to be seen”
you wanted to know if believe this to be true. and my answer would be yes! absolutely!

it is no coincidence that children and teenagers have the majority of ghost encounters, because most people are brought up to believe that ghosts do not exist, so by the time children turn into adults they start to believe that ghosts are not real, therefore they stop seeing them.

then as an adult we have to learn to trust our own senses again, learn to listen to our own inner feelings and perceptions, rather than to follow what society dictates. for the ones who chose to trust their own awareness over the collective one, this means living a life that is a constant battle against convention. because so many people are afraid of people who are different, thus they fear the unknown, fear the new, fear people who follow intuition rather than dogma.

but i would like to go further i would also say that:
“Some things have to be believed to be felt”
as in our modern society we seem to live a life that separates us from our feelings and teaches us that rational thought is more important than feeling. yet our feelings are honest and a good guide. still, i am in the process to learn to listen to my feelings more and more. and in the process i discover that i can feel things, because i learned to believe in their existence. i cannot see ghosts, but i can feel them. i am no vet, but i can feel when an animal is destined to die. i am no psychologist, but i can feel a soul that is quietly begging for liberation. yet i have yet to discover the way to fully liberate my own soul and the way to liberate others.

and therefore i am in search of a teacher

If you believe in something or someone, you visualize it.
For the universe it’s doen’t matter is it real or a imagination.
It can come true.

Everything, except life, came because someone believed in that thing before it came to be.

I heard of “seeing is believing”, but “believing to be seen” is harder for me to grasp. However, I follow the teachings of Jesus Christ and one today must believe in what he teaches to learn his meaning.
Alot of truths are lost because we don’t trust the prophets and believe what they teach is true. Sadly,we turn to man for answers to questions and satisfaction when the answers we seek are already in us, but we lack the ‘belief’ that allows us to see and hear.

Because faith leads to realization,
Believe=faith, to be seen=realization,
and in some cases only the believer has eyes to see.

Possibly there is strange presences, that can be seen, without we have believed in it.

“Some things have to be believed to be seen”

Well, to me its you believing is same to having full faith in something or someone. Its like jumping off the plane with a parachute, you believe the parachute will work and then you’ll be able to see the world like a bird.
Like friendship and love, you need to have full faith or believe in it in order to see its beauty.
Sometimes it borders of being reckless and being carefull.
But also you must have the courage to face the hearthache if things don’t turn out like you had imagined. Its a gamble and at times the stakes are high.
I had full faith in my love for my fiancee, but in a relationship both have to see the same beauty.
She didn’t and I was broken.
Nevertheless, I still beleive in my love for her.;
Shakespere wrote about true love, Da Vinci painted about true love,Shah Jahan built Taj mahal because of true love, and god maybe created her to break my heart to show me, my believe on true love.

All things that’s seen have been believed by someone. That’s wy we have to be careful with our heart’s wishes.

A thing that is not deeply believed in heart could not appear.
(I agree with lvs)

“Some things have to be believed to be seen”
Well, No I don’t believe in it cz every eye & mind can see what they want to see.
Our imagination & life experience allow us to see things (what ever it is) in our way,
which is difficult to make others see it through our eyes. I can’t believe in anything did not feel or pass through.
So how can we believe in the unknown. I do believe in my own seen world and don’t need to believe in any else.
Life is special and weird enough for every person living it, and the simple, easiest way we take it, would be much better…!!

It is believing that is important, to believe is to see…we just need to start believing and stop worrying about seeing.

I Believe In It Even Though It May Contradict The More Scientific Things In Our Lives.

I Believe In It As Much As To Say That I Believe God [Allah] Exists So He Exists As The Quran Exists. =)

If Anyone has Ever Seen Peter Pan,They Might Realize The Basis Of This Beautiful Poem. Not The Actual Basis,But The Basis For Some.In The Movie Children Could See Fairies As Long As They Believed In Them. However,When One Child Starts To Believe Otherwise,The Fairies Start To Disappear.

I May Sound Naive And Foolish And,Most Of All,Childish – But I’m One Of Those Adults Who Believes In The Existance Of Other Forms.Yes,Even Fairies. ^_^

Firstly, I want to thank you Paulo for giving me this oppurtunity to take a bit of a distance from my everyday worries and wonderings, by inviting something different to have a visit in my mind. It’s very refreshing and important, keeps the mind from stucking into certain ways of thinking, keeps it alive and running.

“Some things have to be believed to be seen” do I believe in this?

Well, to find an answer, I must first dream a list of potential situations in which this might make sense.

I have to believe it makes sense, in order to find out if it makes sense.

So, lets give it a go…..

*dreaming dreaming dreaming….*

Ok, here’s a situation for you:

- I need to believe that my boyfriend is trustworthy in order to see him as a trustworthy person.

If I don’t believe he’s trustworthy, it does not matter how much of a saint he is or isn’t, since without my belief I would always remain jealous and suspicious no matter what.

Hmmm… what other situations will dreaming bring to me….

Well the more I think of it, the more it applies to all my lived moments.

Such is the case with creation, first comes potential, the dream, the belief… then comes the material form of what we have dreamed.

We first see with the eyes of our soul,
believe what we see,
and finally see it with our physical eyes.

:)

Hi Paulo

If you dont know what truth is dont proclaim that whatever you write is the truth.

I read “The Alchemist” and the narration is good.I really enjoyed reading that book.

I read “The Zahir” and am influenced in the same way.But later on I realized that it has got lot of negative philosophy. It did squander my time a lot.

What my request is write a book, but don’t proclaim that what ever you write is universal law.People would be mislead a lot.

It might effect you in the long run.

You can contact me and I can tell you clearly where you went wrong.

My daughter called me nine and a half months ago… her voice was quiet holding back tears. “I made a mistake mom, I’m pregnant.” I told her I loved her and the baby in her. We decided that day that we would never, ever use the word “mistake” again. We BELIEVED that she would be a blessing. We BELIEVED that she would bring joy and goodness to the world. Camille was born two weeks ago and all we can SEE is her beauty, her innocence and when we hear her coo and SEE her smile we can only guess that she remembers conversing with angels.

I think LOVE is like this… if you don’t believe in it, if you don’t nourish it, it wouldn’t be there anymore. Somehow this makes me remember the saying that beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. I would say that beauty is in the eyes of the person who loves… if he doesn’t love, then the beauty wouldn’t be seen either.

Once upon a time I read a book called “Unicorn Highway”, nowadays one can only buy it used and it is expensive, but it contains a beautiful message: If seeing is believing, believing must be seeing. Like that a little boy can finally ride a unicorn. So if only we believe, we might see or hear or feel…
