Pirate attacks around the world rise by 20%

Today in Digg I found this article about real life piracy by Gethin Chamberlain for the Telegraph.co.uk

They may no longer dress like characters from the Disney film Pirates of the Caribbean, but the buccaneers of the 21st century have lost none of their taste for a bloodthirsty boarding.

Mariners are being warned of a growing threat from pirates around the world after attacks on shipping rose by 20 per cent over the last year.

The International Maritime Bureau’s latest report reveals the first rise in pirate attacks since their previous peak in the mid 1990s. In one particularly savage incident in the Philippines in March, pirates shot dead the captain of a passenger boat and two of his crew before tying them to their anchor and tossing it overboard. They then shot the two remaining crew members and escaped in a motor boat.

The sharp rise in pirate attacks is blamed in large part on the collapse of law and order in Somalia and political unrest in Nigeria. The seas around the two African countries are now regarded as some of the most dangerous in the world.

  • I suppose a rise in attacks fits in with most other rises in crimes , interest rates ,fuel ..and so on ..but the collapse of law and order and the unrest in Nigeria will make it even more unstable ..and this sends messages to the savagers that when things are vulnerable in the political arena ,thats the best time to strike .Its sad though that things are so corrupt over there.

  • If you are interested in pirates, here is a link that you may be interested in. It’s about Jean Lafitte the pirate. He was a pirate during the 18th century in the Gulf of Mexico. http://www.squidoo.com/jeanlafitte

They were not corrupt until someone went over there and stole their children to make slaves out of them…….I say again, “The world of tomorrow depends very much on how we treat the children of today”! Simple but true.

  • In an interview, Johnny Depp told, he “made a pact with the devil, acting in Pirates of the Carribbean”. And that’s obvious that since he had this bouncy part, he only choose darkened roles…

One day someone told me about the “ghost vessel”, as existing. I’m quite dubious to it. But I won’t tell it so loud, since life manages to see me I’m wrong when I just object from the existence of something… :)
And for that idea, I really prefer to stay in that state…

On the other hand, I never heard about those pirates set out by this article. This is just a mark of the result of an unfair society. That definitely pushes people to have nothing to loose. Even killing innocent people.

I still don’t understand why terrorists of all sorts, are always attacking civics… This is a non-sense for me. And History shows us, that most of the time, terrorists are creating by governments.

    A sad new…

  • So history repeats itself.Nothing new under the sun.

And why has there been a collapse in law & order?…because of the unscrupulous misuse of governmental power and the corruption of society.
Those poor people (not necessarily the pirates) have never been asked what “they” want, and by the way, “our” distant forefathers started all this, so no need to wonder where they learned this behaviour. Sorry, but the truth always did hurt…

Love & fairness to all, Paul
