My biography, entitled The Wizard, has just been released in Brazil and given that I opened all my files to my biographer, some people have been horrified with my past.
So here is my question to you: Should you know all about me?

Hola Senor Paulo,
I think that your life stories has impacted so many people around the world, bringing them closer to God, that perhaps, you might bring one more closer to the Universe. Your books will impact our children, and their children. You will live on forever. One thing is for sure Senor Paulo, no matter what, I will never be able to experience exactly what you felt at that moment, and at that time. I could only use my imagination. So my answer is yes, share your life, share your soul.
It’s your past so it’s your choice. And then it’s the decision of each individual whether or not they want to read what you choose to tell us.
I won’t read others opinions before I say mine first. I think and believe, that giving people the option to find out everything about someone is a great great gift which might help others to understand. To understand life. It is not important what wrong we did, but how we found the power and energy to return on the “right path”. Important is that we didn’t avoid the lesson, challenged ourselves and won. So writing everything about yourself is actually wisdom offered to people.
Yet more, writing about everything of yourself is just next step in your personal life lesson… ;o)
Dear Paolo:
Hmmm. You can tell me personally, I’m dying to know. But maybe you should keep it a secret from others, unless there are those who also really want to know.
Marcela
And I forgot… how can they be horrified with your past?
the past is what it makes our present, and sometimes contribute to our future. I dont know your past, and I dont want to know about it, becuase what I do care of is what the past that HORRIBLE past made in your life. you are wonderful now, and when we look in the past need to be things thats brings us good times, we need to forget and leave the things that makes us feel sad or any weird feeling.
your past is only yours, is your decision if you want us to know about it. and we need to focous more in the present that tomorrow will be in the past and making our new present and contributing to our futeure. I dont know if you understood me, but well!
Hi there! haha I just want to thank you everything, every single word of your books made me feel somewhere else, not in earth.
And you made and interesting question…
I guess we dont need to know everything about you, becuase our secrets the ones we have inside, the ones that we have deeply in our hearts. somethings that we remember at night and we love doing it. we enjoy knowing that are oure secrets.
life will be awfull if we say everything, becuase the sense of linving will change completely, we will be all the same. and the magic we have in our hearts will just dissapear. so I think we need to have secrets about us, thats what makes us different and interesting. I think if I knew everything about you, the feeling I have for you will change dramatically, so lets have secrets, just for ourselfs! thanks for letting us write you!
All I can say through knowing how critics and academics go into deep explanations and interpretations of literature, I always prefered to know by the Author himself his life, strenghts, weakness, motivations.. This author cares surely to let ME, as a reader and fan, know his deepest “muse” if i may say.
PEOPLE “HORRIFIED” better than ignorants telling us analysis that are not related to the truth at all.
Thanks for being in the World.
At Least you are HUMAN,
ARENT YOU?..
To really know someone is to be that someone. People may have had a harsh past and the only way they know how to deal with it is either hide it, express it, be the person they are today from it. These three aspects have common factors of expressing it; become a workholic, write, paint, dancing, walk towards the sunset! Your books has inspired millions of people and to know the great man behind these powerful words is a privilidge no matter what past, present or future holds. I would personally love to be inside a great mind as urself, Mr. Coelho. You have changed many lives! Thank you.
Можно на электронную почту ilyushkin_mag@mail.ru
From Russia.
I read a short blurb on your biography. The word satanism was inserted. I draw no judgement on the word. There are many misconceptions about the religious practices of the world. I myself believe that delving into the dark helps us see the light more clearly. I have found some of the things in your books to be a bit shocking and maybe controversial. I have enjoyed another view point and have felt very enlightened to read both the dark and light aspects of your books. I will enjoy knowing/reading that you are a multifaceted person with a dark and light side. All of us have both sides. Some are brave enough to show both. You are a warrior, after all.
E a Chris?
PATRICIA RUDECK
Dear paulo,
your books are very special to me. we, indians, have a unique passion for spirituality. in many ways, our’s is a special country.although we are poor., harassed every minute by natural calamity’s and riots, we have a special ability.that is to laugh at our problems.in other words, we sees problems through a spiritual angle.your novel-The alchemist has many links with the indian way of spiritual thinking. the shepherd boy- santiago, obsessed by an unknown treasure, symbolises for our ‘jivatma’ who is in want to meet his ‘paramatma’(the treasure itself).fatima is the stimulus. and to write such a great spiritual novel, one needs a great spiritual undestanding. you have that and for that i love you very much.
No, I do not think we need to know everything about anyone, everyone has the right to privacy and a right to keep to themselves what they choose to keep to themselves.
However, I think when someone chooses to share their life stories it can really aid the reader. Not just in learning about the person, but learning about themselves as well.
Some people may read this book and gain some understanding as they see how someone else lived through and dealt with similar situations that they are expirencing in thier own lives. Some may find enlightenment as they realize they are going through the same things but never knew. Some others, though their own personal expirences in life are totally unique to them, will see that the other person dealt with things that were totally unique to them as well, and as such maybe they will not feel so alone in handling issues that no one else has.
Do we need to know everything? No. Do we have a right to know everything? No. Can we learn and grow personaly from learning about others lives? Yes.
Thank you Paulo for allowing this book to come out and your stories to be told. I hope it is published in America sometime soon.
Dear Paulo:
I think that knowing everything about an author is entirely up to the author. Life’s experiences make you who you are, how you see the world, how you express your feelings and thoughts, so they are important to YOU as a whole (entity). It is very brave to open up your entire past to your readers, and anyone who is horrified by it is not seeing the value in the fact that these experiences not only make you who you are today, but are also a gift to your readers.
But the decision to let everyone in is entirely up to you. The word “should” is the operative. The fact that you DID, is our blessing.
Thank you. You are truly an inspiration.
Alisa
Voy a vivir!
Vamos a ahorcanos.
T q!
Paulo,
I agree with Clary Lopez, real people read the stoires of those they can be inspired by and learn from them. Tell your story and repeat your personal legand as often as you can and as Kahlil Gibran says ‘remember that life gives of itself to itself and you are but a witness’ – we will all benefit from what you have to tell us.
Each person you touch will touch another, I know that I have passed your books to many people and always make a point of giving them to those that ask for any kind of learning.
Thw Witch of Portobello would not have hesitated for a second!
Regards
John
The Prodigal Son, also known as the Lost Son, is one of the best known parables of Jesus.[Luke 15:11-32]
Dear Paulo, MY ONLY MASTER Jesus Christ tells the story of a man who has two sons. The younger demands his share of his inheritance while his father is still living, and goes off to a distant country where he “waste[s] his substance with riotous living”, and eventually has to take work as a swine herder (clearly a low point, as swine are not kosher in Judaism). There he comes to his senses, and determines to return home and throw himself on his father’s mercy. But when he returns home, his father greets him with open arms, and hardly gives him a chance to express his repentance; he kills a “fatted calf” to celebrate his return. The older brother becomes jealous at the favored treatment of his faithless brother and upset at the lack of reward for his own faithfulness. But the father responds:
“Son, thou art ever with me, and all that I have is thine. It was meet that we should make merry, and be glad: for this thy brother WAS DEAD, and IS ALIVE AGAIN; and was LOST, and is FOUND!”
(Luke 15:11-32)
I believe it takes a lot of courage to unmask ourselves to the world, for that I salute you. Your life and your experiences is what brought you to where you are right now and helped you create all the wonderful books you have written. When a writer reveals himself in this manner they are able to connect to a lot more people at their level, they are hopeful because they realize that you are just another human being with the same problems, challenges, and experiences as them. If you managed to make some positive out of your bad experiences and decision, so can we. That’s the way I see it. I don’t want to read about some perfect being who never made a mistake or error in his life, I can’t relate to that. I need to know about someone who had the same or worst struggles I deal with day in and out and yet they managed not only to survive but to succeed.
Thank you for sharing your true self with us.
Sincerely,
Clary Lopez

Dear Paulo,
I will agree with almost all the opinions, because there is truth in all of them.
I will insist in one : It is your choice, it is a very personal choice, that needs no reasoning, excusing and explanation.People will adhere or not…every artist, every human being is called to accept this once its action is posed.
Apocalypse, was generally a frightening event for people, in my personal experience (I’m a person in favor of apocalypsis, revealing the the paths, the hidden and non-said…)I learned to offer it only there that my intuition and experience indicate me it can be receivable. That’s my personal choice.
An artist doesn’t do it the same way, as an artist, writer etc. wears a mask and delivers the apocalypse, so the subject is not concerned, but it’s just a medium. This is what you have done through your books, I think, until now.
I also know that our past and personal experiences are our valuable treasures, our diamonds and rubis that we gathered through life, to become who we are (no matter their origin, consistence, type).
It’s up to you if you want to show your collection or not :)
But, what people think of your stones is another think, a diamond is called precious in one place, and it is a carbon in another :)
It is the owner who cares on what to do with it.
I’ve read something on your website, but I guess I don’t know everything about you, the latest book about your biography attracts me a lot!
Anyway, I really think you’re a wonderful man and writer, you’ve faced very difficult situations in your life and you’re brave now to let the world know the whole story of your “path” until now, I esteem you deeply and am proud to be your contact somewhere here online, thanks for the connections and your works!!
So Pandora’s Box has opened!
Like my namesake, I anticipate, many will perceive and distort the gifts you have chosen to share as evils (Pandora being a corruption of the Goddess Anesidora), but others will not and will recognise that you are a Luminary who has walked a long path and who now holds a guiding light.
Magical theatrics rely on secrecy and trickery, so now we know what type of Magus you are.
Thank you for your honesty, and for feeling that we are more than just readers or buyers of paper,
I look forward to hopefully meeting you one day.
dear paulo,
your past is what makes your present, isn’t it? without the experiences we’ve made we wouldn’t be what we are today. in your case that means for me: i’m looking forward to reading your biography – no matter what you’ve done (don’t know it yet ;)), it has built up your personality and thus your writing… maybe i’ll read things i didn’t expect or didn’t even want to expect, but nevertheless it will be interesting to see what has made you the person you are today. and maybe we’ll get some insight into the factors that influenced you while writing your novels. aaaaand: with reference to all those “semi-VIPs” that are publishing their biographies nowadays, you really HAVE experienced years of life and achieved a lot of important things (making people feel and think) with your work!! if it is OK for you, which is obviously the case, why not share your life with the ones that are interested in it!? as i’ve said, i’m looking forward to it! :)
Paulo,
your choice entirely, sorry I was being familiar there thinking I knew you. your past is what made you and therefore what made you the author I admire, however, what I admire is the ‘destination’ not necessarily the journey. Do I really need to know all the details of the journey? Not really – but it’s human nature, if you are willing to tell us then I am more than willing to objectively read/hear. There is a voyeur in all of us that wants to know the details of others so that we can measure ourselves against them and feel good if we didn’t make the same mistakes or bad if we didn’t have the same opportunities – but we don’t really want to dwell on that feeling :-) Personally I think it’s a particularly special individual that can open up completely and not hold just a little of the personally embarassing back. If you are in the former category I salute you and my admiration of you just increased.
Dear Paulo
One of the things that has always inspired me about your work is your readiness to lay your self open. It is inspiring because it is courageous and something that I believe most of us would be too scared to do.
It can also hold a mirror up to each of us to our own dark places. We find it soo hard to accept that those we admire are not perfect, just as we find it hard to deal with our own imperfections. This makes your courage so valuable to us. You remind us, although many of us do not want to be reminded, that what we don’t accept about others we do not accept within ourselves.
To become transparent to ourselves and the world is an act of great personal power. It doesn’t matter who else sees it or reads it. Those who wish to preserve the mystery and the secrets can simply not read the book. A life governed by fear of criticism or ridicule is no life.
Love and blessings
Rebecca
Respected Mr Paulo coelho,
Thanks for responding to my first mail to you.
Sheer pleasure to write to you for the second time.
Answering your question,i think experiences we have , travels we take, are meant to be shared. For the very fact, sharing is loving.
When we share our experiences, our past ;not only it helps us to know ourselves better but also the thought, belief transcends to new level of understanding ,interpretation, after which it leads to action/change.
Although, everyone has something in life which may be interpreted otherwise by outsiders,it should be shared with courage, only if it is going to do someone/something good.
Share Good ; withhold ‘not so good’.”
Thanks indeed for being an true alchemist and guiding millions of people to the path of wisdom and sanity.
As far as “wizard’ is considered, we all would love to know more about you, your past(because that has led you to where you are, today) and learn more without judging it .
Hey!Alchemist,Warrior of light,wizard,
May the infinite intelligence be with you. Always.
Love,

Well, having met you in person, and having read most of your books (apart from Veronika decides to die) I can say that the more I learn about you, the less I know….
However, exactly how much should you reveal of your life? That’s up to you, but I suspect you will still be full of surprises no matter how much you reveal!
The past is a part of your life.
You would not be that human being without your past.
It made you to this person, who you are today.
But some memories are there to care, not to share.
Love & Light Sofi
The life of a person who influences thousands of people is of great responsibility. Many a times I felt that he should have gone through many experiences personally so as not to judge others going through it and also be able to relate personally to others and help them come out of it.
Also such a person who becomes an inspiration and role model to the world shows through these human experiences that he is not an angel who descended from heaven to be worshipped on an altar but a person like us who through his determination and continuous efforts, achieved his dreams.
Keeping these aspects in mind, Mr Coelho, I feel that getting the details of the past is definitely in the right direction and it actually helps even the person who has given up hope and ambitions in life to rise above his limitations and defeat and still pursue his dreams.
Only a strong and mature person who has made peace with his past can do what you have done and I truly appreciate the frankness and openness with which you share your early years where most people will try to cover it up or be in denial of the things they committed.
About your book,I am looking forward to read it,it was your choice to share you experiences with us,we are not intruders peeping trough the key hole.I am sure is veru interesting, like you have always been.
To me it sounds a bit hypocrite to be horrified about someones past life. I mean, to appreciate you know on your glory and not appreciate the making of you. And who excatly has such a perfect past that could not be criticised? And isn’t it easy to change that by changing perspective and surroundings? For example country, continent, culture, religion…
Also the yellow press is very popular nowdays. We love all the details we can get from celebrities. So it’s a waste to say that we don’t want to know. And I’m pretty sure you, Paolo, still have your secrets now that the biography has been published.
love, S
My opinion is that nobody will tell the whole 100% truth about himself.Even in a diary, one select things an situations ,not talking about point of view and subjectivity. No,I think is not important we know all about yourself,is enough key situations.Dont missunderstand me,I am interested in you a lot, still you need a life only for yourself.I think you are sincere,is not that the problem. But why such a morbid curiosity? What should be the use?No privacy?Take care, keep writing. You are amazing.
Dearest Paulo,
I don’t mean to assume, but i just watched your video of this question and you seemed rather down. I know that opening your personal life out to the world could not have been one of the easiest of things to do in life. I read further about your book, and i see that it was made because of pact. Would you have released it anyway? I hope that the information you contained was worth your while, and i hope that you can still see this in a somewhat positive light. Don’t be sad or worried.. You’re still pretty incredible in my eyes.
If you are a bit anxious, i hope some bob marley can calm you a bit..
Don’t worry.. About a thing.. Cause every little thing..
Is gonna be alright..
*smile*
Thank you for being.

No.
Each will discover, in time, what we need to see.
Each will see what we will, from a different perspective, depending on life circumstances, etc etc.
Just be.
Humbly,
austere.
Paulo,
I hand the question back to you. Why do you want to write your biography? What do you hope to give your readers? Then read what you have written. Is it true, to your outcome?
Answer these questions and others that spring up in your mind. Then you will see that you, need not ask the question in the first place.
Not everyone is a victim or a perpetrator some of us are just dragons.
We live our lives without regret or revenge instead we do what is right in front of us.
Peace my friend it is all around you.
Lawrence
what we are is what we did, what we have is what we gave. Learn from the experience of others you will not have the time to do them all. I appreciate sharing your past with us and let us live it and feel so that we learn from your experiences. thx again
Actually, the question should be:
Should You … I …
Know all about me … ME?
Shoud I know all about me?
absolutely
Know YOU and
BE YOU
Smiles
With all my appreciation to you,
I like the books you wrote.
Even if you are/were/will be a murderer or something worst, I like your books, not you.
If I don’t like one of your books, it won’t turn me to dislike you, nor your other books.
my best regards,
Irwan
sorry, did not read your latest book. So, in a nutshell, what is the message? Eagerly waiting to learn more…
you are who you are NOW in this moment. Yes, the past has a big part to do with who you are NOW. Are you happy with who you are? Are you, Paulo, accepting Paulo? If yes, then the past makes no difference. The past is the past. Gone, so far gone, and you’re so missing the moment … :) And does it make any difference what anybody else things of your past? They admire you NOW, for who you are. You got to this moment somehow. It’s not always easy :).
One has to honor the past, it is sacred, it is the reason why we are here now, wherever we are :) We should always be grateful … and thank everyone, everyone who crossed our paths.
Smiles
Dear Paulo,
I would suggest that you should spread your whole story, AS IT IS, whoever admires you should accept your entire past, and people must understand that no one is perfect. I think whatever horrified people in your past is more important than any other, because you are a source of inspiration to so many people around the world, I believe this would help alo of people to understand that whatever was the situation or the past, one can change and overcome all obstacles toward being a great person, and no true example is greater than yours. Thanks
Of course the final decision is left to you, but you will admit that u have lived a very ‘extraordinary’ life, a life which has shades of not just virtues but vice too.
a lot of ‘great’ people’s biography that i have read, focuses on their positive side, making them larger than life, people free of vices. Your story is that of a person with average beginnings, a little courage to explore beyond the known, face the consequnces, and finally raise above it all.
More than anything else, it will require a tremendous amount of courage to say all, u’r alreday huge fanfollinwg may be in turmoil, but if u choose to share it all, then eventually it would benefit all who care to contemplate it; it would show the path to a whole lot of the younger generation.
If u happen to ‘say it all’ I would prefer to read it in your own words. your autobiography; while other writers can accurately describe the evnts in your life, only u can throw light on what made you make the choices it made.
to answewr your question ” should I know all about you” yes i would love to, it may be a good eye opener for me. But I respect your privacy, final decison is yours and what ever u decide I am OK with it.
love
aditya
Dearest Paulo and friends,
It seems we all agree that none of us has to reveal anything should we not want to.. However Paulo, as much as people may say you don’t have to tell them anything, that doesn’t mean they’re not curious about you, and want to know. I suppose with most famous people, there is this element of curiosity as to who they are due to one’s perception of them advertised by the media. Of course, yours is a amplified connection due to your words influencing so many lives. Your words are beautiful, and i know that many people love you, and feel a connection towards you because of it. Your books are wise, and your status is well known around the world for your goodness and saint-like behaviour. I think that people associate wisdom, spirituality and ‘saintness’ as the only part of you, and when they read about the various not-so-saint like experiences you’ve been through, they found themselves shocked as you tarnished their perfect image of you. From what I’ve read before, there are many things you’ve dwelled in that are somewhat taboo in our society and even down right opposed. Truth is, many people are going to judge you for it once they read it, they’re going to even look down on you, and will stop reading your material- opposing it by all means. But you know, you don’t need anyone’s approval for things you’ve been through in life. As much as one may read your story, that doesn’t mean they truely know you. Don’t let what people are telling you, or how people react to your past make you think less of yourself. People are so quick to judge others way before they even look at themselves. Many fellows will leave, while others may love and admire you more for your honesty. I’m pretty sure, you must be tired of people constantly trying to get to know you- expecting you to be someone you’re not. In a way, this book will set you free – just don’t doubt it and never let anyone make you feel bad about who you are. Don’t forget, millions of people will always love you, regardless.
Thank you for being.

Dear Paolo
I think my answer would be ‘Yes’.
You have become what you are because of what you were.
I’m so interested to know about The Wizard’s history.

Dear Paulo,
You shared already a lot of yourself through your books. You shared not only words but also the energies behind the real life experiences. Sharing in this way is a new, fun way of learning. Your biography will be a shining example of how to live life to the core. It will be a standard and guidance for many people who want to discover how to live life.
For me personally, connecting to and feeling these core energies in your life is more important then to know all the details of your past personal life.
I am more interested in your present. The unfolding of your life as it happens right now. The choices you make, the feelings you have, the insights you discover in this exact moment. Therefore the blog and your presence on the internet are more valuable for me as is your biography. Presence is highly appreciated.

Apreciado Sr. Coelho
Exito Muito obrigada.
