Italy defends move to patrol streets with soldiers

Today, I found in Digg, this interesting article by Reuters.

“The Italian government has defended its decision to use soldiers to patrol cities in an effort to curb crime, rejecting criticism that it will “militarise” the streets.

(…)

The government announced on Friday that up to 2,500 soldiers, some of whom have served in Afghanistan and Kosovo, would be made available for a trial period of six months to bolster the police in difficult urban areas.

Silvio Berlusconi’s new conservative government won an April election on a law-and-order ticket, and crime and public safety have stayed on top of the political agenda since Mr Berlusconi took office.

The government’s decision was attacked by the centre-left opposition, with Roberta Pinotti, defence spokesman for the Democratic party, expressing “firm opposition to the militarisation of the streets”.

  • It`s orrible to see my country (that I love) treated so bad.
“Silvio” is sistematically destroing Italy. He promise goods and money for everyone and than makes his own law to defend his “information factory”. Now the tree major networks are of mr. Berlusca and the other tree (the national ones) too. Italy is now in the hands of one only person that control tv, newspaper and editorial services….
    I agree with Pia: :-(
    (sorry for my poor english)

  • They don’t need the army, just more police officers!

  • well u should also think about the campania-napoli problem, the gas price at 1.5 euros for liter, the phone interception law, the mafia, the LACK OF PUBLIC INFORMATION etc etc etc.
the fact is that our country has been ruled by the same people for so many years that it doesnt matter wheter the right or the left is at the top of the gov’t.. in the whole world, not just in italy we need a new kind of attitude, a new way of thinking and approaching issues. we r not talkin about a man, but about a whole generation

  • Silvio is defenitely too reach.I heard his fortune is equal to that of a whole african country. He is an example of the bad side of capitalism. But Bettino Craxi was better?I dont think so.Bye

  • This makes me want to move to Italy. There are many bad people out there that have a need to hurt the weak. The army are just trying to help the police to bring peace to the streets.

  • Ciao Paolo…we agree on so much! But Mr. berlusca won the elections very well because he played the kind of music Italians want to hear now : security for those who are afraid of immigrants, lowering taxes (and eliminating important services) and cleaning up the garbage in Naples. (does anyone rememeber how many italians emigrated to other countries, and exported bad things like the mafia and other organized crime families?) And what do the neapolitans (who put up signs saying “santo subito” when he visited naples) think about him now that he is doing things that they don’t agree with to solve that problem? People forget things very easily, as long as somebody solves their problems, fills their stomachs, but doesn’t step on their toes…

  • Strange people Italians.sorry ,they do really queer things.like always. They are good on Arts, kitchen, other good thibks. Why they have to waste time on stupid things?

  • Two things:

Society has always create persons that have nothing to lose. This comes naturally from many ways. Maybe by not redistribute the profits, that are better used to banquets, travels, holidays, guns, drugs, nuclear, hidden experiences… all that leads to poverty and lacks of many kinds.

Some threaten that have been embracing third or quarter worlds, is now reaching occidental homes. And people are losing themselves between two worlds, merely. The ancient one that don’t fit anymore. They have hit rock bottom. They’re in the wave’s hollow, as we say in France…

By an example, They want to find a job, but can’t get along with, or less, couldn’t find one, even for two hours. Thus, they are in front of the choice to do what they are skilled to. But they never heard about this new magical world that’s born, or they did not listen, otherwise they can’t take the lift to the new sight.

On Tv, press, or radio, one could follow the news about those people that become cruel, murderers… Never forget their behaviour has a cause. A cause well-thought, or simply resulted, to put Police on streets, without being disturbed by the possible disagreement of the public opinion.

That’s how the governments settle more and more fear in human’s heart. As a war climate, also to justify the roberry of foreigners soils. As we can easily compare those civil plans, with abroad ones.

But don’t let us fall into that cons.

  • So true, unfortunately. :-(

  • Well, it appears that Italy are living under a kind of soft dictatorship in any case, and this is another step… I almost had occasion to meetcrossed paths with Berlusconi whilst I was teaching Senate execs English many years ago, during his first term of government. The writing was already on the wall then, but even still, how Italy has changed….
