The stories of the desert priests

By Paulo Coelho

During the early part of the Christian era, the monastery at Scete became a center where many people gathered. After renouncing everything they had, they went to live in the desert surrounding the monastery. Many of the teachings of these men have been collected and published in numerous books. The stories of the desert priests

The way to please the Lord

A novice went to Abbot Macarius seeking advice about the best way to please the Lord.

- Go to the cemetery and insult the dead – said Macarius.

The brother did as he was told. The following day, he returned to Macarius.

- Did they respond? – asked the abbot.

The novice said no, they didn’t.

- Then go to them and praise them.

The novice obeyed. That same afternoon, he returned to the abbot, who again wished to know whether the dead had responded.

- No – said the novice.

- In order to please the Lord, behave as they do – said Macarius. – Pay no heed to the insults of men, nor to their praise; in this way, you shall forge your own path.

  • A great piece in today’s stories. Annie and Alexandra thanks for the insightful words I feel I learned something. We will meet many people through out our lives.

  • I really needed this today..
    Thank you

  • so wise this approach…a warrior never allows anyone to influence him negatively or positevely..he minds his own business, and moreover as you have also said, he has all the ‘tools’ necessary to fulfil his legend…the same that Castaneda had said, that noone does harm to a warrior..The warrior decides everything for himself, and follows with courage his path…

  • This I must remember .Very true and very useful, just not always easy.We are human beings, therefor weak, and sometimes is pleasant at least hearing that someone praises us.But you are right, that is just weakness,a strong person is not longing after otheres praising him. With insults is harder,on my opinion, but training can help.Every day ,step by step, getting something like immunity against insults.Bye

They certainly do have some strange challenges, those wise men of Scete, and I’m not sure I like this one, but the moral is true and I too believe that it is important for us not to pay head to those who try to mock us and bring us down. We need to keep our all our senses sharp and concentrate on reaching our dream and living our personal destiny. Love, Paul
