It's a sort of mixing natural elements: earth from the paper and air from the feather and many others, why not? It seems to bring peace inside you (white dove=freedom, peace etc.) It's just my opinion, you probably don't think about the reasons, just do it because it resonates with your interior and relaxes you. It's funny because I do the same thing when cooking some pastry and need to "caress" each sheet with a feather or more with oil on it/them.
