Weekly Free Association : The Moon

by Paulo Coelho on July 21, 2008

Taking the lead of last week’s free association, we now pass to the Moon.
In many traditions the moon is seen as the counterpart of the Sun. It is considered as the Yin – female – passive counterpart of the Solar Yang – active – male star.
The Moon, given that is it lighten by the rays of the Sun, is said to be “reflexive” – hence the association of the Goddess Athena, the goddess of rational thinking and technology, with the owl, animal that lives by night.
At the other side of the spectrum, the Moon, given that it reigns over the tides, is linked to the underworld, the world of imagination – the realm of Selene or Artemis for the Greeks.
We can see then the apparent opposition between reason and imagination. Yet bare in mind that in the world of symbols, apparent oppositions never actually exclude one another.
Now, you take the floor : what do you associate with the Moon?

The sun brings heat and light and wind and rain into our world. It is the sun who lights the face of the moon and because of him she gives us the energy that we need in order to make the sun proud of what he has accomplished. We live out our daily lives without straying far from the earth, our womb. We walk all over on her belly and she protects us and gives us food and shelter with the blessings of the sun and the moon. The sun, the earth and the moon have invested a great deal in our success as a species. According to us humans it is unlawful for parents to destroy their own children. These laws do not apply to the Earth the Sun or the Moon and it is only the most arrogant among us humans who have sought to challenge their wisdom. Our celestial creators do not take these matters lightly, they take them quite brilliantly. I certainly hope we do not disappoint them. Seek the wisdom of the Sun, seek his blessing to give light to a world that shines back at him such that he can be the proud father that he deserves to be. Seek the wisdom of the Moon and harness her power to release the Earth from its obligation to support us. Only in this way will we as humans be a proud and tall species.

I have always had deep primal emotions associated with the moon and its energy. For me the moon very much represents the quiet and calm yet mystifyingly powerful aura surrounding the spirit of enchantment, inspiration and the creative underlying force. It brings me into communion with great thinkers, philosophers, inventors, poets and mystics that fill the vast reaches of space and time. It brings to my mind images of fire, volcanic smoke and entrancing rituals, meat, energy and purity that resonates the precursors for the foundations of industrialized society. Fortunately I have come to learn how to love and respect the sun in the same way, but it wasn’t always that way. :)

I had to go off somewhere so didnt have the time to continue, but all these other assosiations came into my mind, too: silver, mercury, water, the ocean, iron, the smell of sand, the sound of a violin, the taste of absinthe (anise), the feel of silk, wolves, fairytales, the ancient times, pastlifes..

Especially full moon seems to affect me with this flow of inspiration, it makes me write poems, it makes me feel powerful and very feminine, it makes me sexually aroused, and sometimes it even makes me a feminist, which i normally definitely am not. And this happens even when I dont know its a full moon, but when i’m wondering why I felt so.. strange, restless and yet so confident, I find out it’s been a full moon. Sometimes I can’t sleep then either. Moon always makes me feel good n confident in some special way. It’s the light that shines even in the darkest of nights – isn’t that just amazing! Moon is like a mysterious smile of a stranger that you know by heart. You know those types, the ones that you only see for the first time, but as you look into their eyes, its like you’ve already looked into them all your life. See! Even thinking of moon makes me all romantic…

A more comprehensive list of associations:
-power
-feminity
-mystery
-hidden knowledge / secret wisdom
-magic
-earth
-spirits
-completeness
-sex
-bridge between the night n day, known n unknown, visible n invisible…

The Moon corresponds to the left channel of energy in our energetic bodies and is associated with the power of desire, existence, joy, auspiciousness, the past, emotions, subconscious, mother, Archangel Michael or Shri Bhairava.
I also associate the Moon with the stars and the sky, with peace, contemplation, with beautiful summer nights, with compassion and romantism.
I love both the Moon and the Sun and they complete each other so wonderfully, as God created them to balance each other, to create harmony, or at least I like to believe so.
When I look at the Moon and see its white light and its perfect round shape (when it is round), I am always amazed at the beauty and perfection that God created, how everything is meant to be harmonious, in a balance! :-)

Lots of hugs and may God bless the whole world with love and compassion!
Affectionately,
Carmen Larisa

Dear SHSWL,

“The murmur of glittering waves tendering your feet”. :) So pictorial. I couldn’t get out of my mind… For the last I hope. Thank you for all your words. These days, your poem is one of a sign I was waiting for. Blessings.

I just remembered something important about the moon and what it means /does is when a women menstruates, often a womens cycle can fall on a full moon ..also sexual cycles are controlled by the moon too ..A womans blood carries a vibration – it contains her power and her knowledge encoded /imprinted in her and if she shares this with you , you gain higher consciousness. Love and Light Tania

When thinking of the moon, I think of many of the things that have already been written. I especially liked what Rosa de los Vientos said about bathing in the sea on the day of the full moon.

I also think of when my daughters were young and I didn’t have a lot of time during the day to work in my garden, so I would go out into it at night, during all phases of the moon to weed out the beds and talk to the plants. It was a cooler, calmer time of the day when I could turn all of my attention to the natural world.

Another thing that I thought of that relates both to the sun and to the moon is a song called “Hermano Sol, Hermana Luna” and at the moment, I can hear the song in my head but the group that sings it escapes me.

Another thing: many years ago I studied a work of poetry by Alejandra Pizarnik, called “Arbol de Diana”. I really love a lot of her work. Anyway, Diana was the Roman goddess of the moon, and I seem to remember that Alejandra Pizarnik also went by the name Diana (I really hope I’m remembering this correctly, it’s been such a long time since I’ve read her work.

One last thing…we go camping at a lake high in the mountains every September. I’m told that this year, while we are there, there will be a full moon. Just the thought of this makes me extremely happy!

Oh yes, there is reason interwoven with imagination. Even in the ‘luna’-cies of the moon there is reason, a certain order…there is mystery, chaos only if we are looking at it with outside eyes. To the lunatic it makes perfect sense….like Love.

The Moon – the dark side of love.
Seductive and dangerous.
The Sun and the Moon, the light and the dark, the day and the night.
Two angels constantly watching over us, fighting for our love, helping our soul to grow.
The balance between them adds harmony and melody to our life,
makes it fascinating and mysterious.
The balance which we can only find in the eyes of God.

the one face which always resembles both of us
the silver smile which gives peace to our scattered hearts
the silence which calms our urge
the passion which lets our tears run freely
the hand which has touched me in darkness
the voice which carries what can’t be spoken
the shining surface of dark eyes I dive into
the promise which can’t be broken
the companion which always guards…visible or not
the echo in the caverns of my soul
the light which lets the sword shine completing the flower of sun
the murmur of glittering waves tendering your feet
the whisper within the cool night breeze stroking your hair
the moment our finger tips touch

The moon: A hole in the night sky perhaps? A friend told me that a few years back. To me, the moon is dreamy and electric in a sense that it glows softly like an electric bulb. The moon can turn ordinary things into extraordinary beings. Trees come to life and shadows take on a mind of their own.

For me, the moon is female and power. It is crazyness…. Luna in Spanish, lunático is crazy. Obsessed with the moon?
It is night, it is power, but a very serene power. Serene that it is written almost like Selene, another name for the moon.
It represents patience.
We don’t need to wait that much for the sun to come up, we know that he will be there as usual.
But the moon, as women, make us wait.
The sun creates and destroy, I said… but I think that even the moon can create or destroy, she prefers to affect, which is more delicate.
The Sun doesn’t allow us to see him.
The Moon loves to be seen.

Dear Paul,

Thanks for the new, my friend. Oh, a friend of mine shows me a video last year, in which we saw that journey was untrue. That was a secret video from cia, or something. I could see A or A getting down the ladder of the rocket as if he was on earth! Then, they made him repeat several time. Indeed, gravity there was sublunary. Then, they only had to slow the tape.
Since, I’m really doubted about. Though I read later on, some scientists say that his paths were not referred to moon’s garvity.
Some informations are really dream breakers sometimes.
That’s it! Love for you.

And Water for all.

Dear every one and you all,
does she know she is my every one?

Let’s share some music :

The Sun, The Moon and Stars
Ah-ooh, ah-ah-ooh, ah-ah-ooh, ah-ah-oh-ooh {2x}

It’s late and I’m running out of clever things 2 say
The kind that will bring a girl like U 2 tears
There’s only one more glass of this rosé
Let’s throw it on the fire with our past
And dance the night away until…

The sun, the moon and stars
Don’t seem as far as they did yesterday
The sun, the moon and stars
In love we R – 4ever, always

It’s late and I think it’s about time 4 U and me 2 get closer…
2 get closer than we ever did before (ooh)
Whenever there’s a tide U can let it ride inside your interior
Lay back, relax upon my shore (Ooh)
Ooh-ooh baby, I wanna make love 2 U right here
One inside the other one – no fear, we’re here until…

The sun, the moon and stars
Don’t seem as far as they did yesterday
The sun, the moon and stars
In love we R – 4ever, always

Blow out this candle sunlight
And come lay down next 2 me
And paint another rainbow – ooh-wee (ooh-wee)
Eclipse this light with extasy

[...]
Come on, come on
Let’s lay down
I’m walking out of what to say
That kind of lucky rhyme
Make a chippy wanna say:
”Whisper in the belly
2 me rocking rosé”
Do U like I do
Come on and dance the night away
Let’s lay before they get to close the door
U and me, we got 2 get down on the floor
Come on, let the tide ride in and off the shore
I wanna love U once again – and then some more
Lay your head back I got my hand behind your head
Like U do the limbo supple on the bouncy bed
Let’s bouncing on the summer spring
And when U start 2 fall
U come like a cold winter due in Montreal

(Come on baby)
(The sun, the moon and stars) – hey-hey, hey-hey
(The tide ride) – hey-hey, hoo-hoo
(The tide ride – hou)

The sun, the moon and stars
Don’t seem as far as they did yesterday
The sun, the moon and stars
In love we R – 4ever, always

The sun, the moon and stars
Don’t seem as far as they did yesterday
The sun, the moon and stars
In love we R – 4ever, always

That which is hidden
the hidden part of us
the unknown or not accessible yet
Fluidity – pulling with dynamic force on what is fluid in us and on the Earth
Our shadow
That which illumines differently than the Sun
Cycles, rithyms, phases
Catalyst of movement in cycles
Provoker of our emotional body
Symbol of receptivity and the art of containing and holding,
the Femenine dynamic
Huge natural mirror
An expression of Beingness whereas the Sun is an expression of
Becomingness
Source of light in a dark sky
