  • Good and evil…on Earth, and the central part looks like human brain, again full of..both, but the good is much bigger,…interesting.

  • Pagan and Christian symbols mingled. The circle was the form of the perfect being,in the opinion of great Plato, representing the andorgyn.I think also is representing hear the universe,no end no beginning, heaven with Angels, messengers of God.

  • What you feel within, you reflect and perceive externally.

The inner to the outer, the world within us, reflected in the world without.

Again this picture could be used to symbolise the tarot “The World” or “The Universe”, and used as a reminder of the forces that exist side by side throughout our life.

  • Yes, Aditya, for me they are just black creatures! As child I held tiny bat in my hand it was frightened, soft and warm with oversized ears batting its tiny teeths fearing for its life. It gave me such joy to set it free.

  • masterful !

poor bats must be wondering “what have i done for humans to depict us as evils, we don’t even drink blood, never humans”

remarkable, painstaking effort by the artist ! bats, angels, balance, symmetry, hmmmmmmm.

  • I was doing my graphics assignment which was based on Esher, this is when I 1st saw this image. My eye caught black first and I saw the bat. But second later, when I took a careful look I did find angels aswell. Esher did beautifully showed both evil & goodness together, really impressive.

  • I noticed the bats first ,but upon close examination for a while ..I did see the angels - sometimes I think we do see only what we want to see ,even if our soul is aware of it and our eyes are not ,but thats ok I guess ..I dont like to analyze everything -sometimes we are meant to question things and sometimes not ..Love and Light Tania

  • Yes, I remember being blown away the first time I saw a M.C. Escher piece. A true combination of technical and creative abilities. I too saw only the bats, but noticed the bats and the white made a rosetta. Did not see the angels until I read the comments.

  • Without darkness we would not be able to appreciate light.
They are both different degrees of the same thing.

  • Seems this picture reflects the state of our soul. I could see bats only to begin with and was disturbed as I thought that it is what I have turned into but a few seconds later when I saw the angels was a bit happy to know that there still is some good left in me and that I have to work to polish that(good) side of my diseased soul.

  • Balance, unity. Sincronicity … I just got as a gift from my son a Shem Havaya Circle, the holiest of God’s names that describes the spiritual reality and underlying states of consciousness at the root of all creation. The Shem Havaya is in the circle shape to describe the circle dance that celebrates the universal soul and the state of unification and unconditional love.

    Dear Paul from Austria,

I think that sometimes see first the black part and later we see the angels… And sometimes we need some help to see the good part of something… :-)Today I need it in one theme…

    Dear Agnieszka,
I think you’re right that seemed whiter than black but I think that it is really balanced.

A beautiful example of symmetry & balance, done with the painstaking exactness of a mathematician, by yet another fantastic Dutch artist.

It has been said that I think symmetrically…, and the Bats in this marvellous Escher, depict a distinct hierarchy and order with a well rounded boundary, which is something which children definitely want and require in order to develop into healthy and stable human beings.

There is always food for thought in the images you depict here Paulo.

    Thank you, Love, Paul

Nice visual efect. The white form angels and the dark form bats. First, I only see the bats and I remember one thing about my mother’s childhood mischief. She discover how you can see a bat flying drunk…I prefer don’t know how she discover… ^^
Back to the image, later I see the angels. The good and the evil united.

    Kisses from Barcelona
