Back to the Past II

by Paulo Coelho on August 5, 2008

After posting “The sound of music” yesterday, and feeling a kind of good vibes surrounding me, I decided that this week I will post every single day my favorite musicals from the time when I was young. See how contemporary are the lyrics below (they were written in 1973):

Every time I look at you I don’t understand
Why you let the things you did get so out of hand.
You’d have managed better if you’d had it planned.
Why’d you choose such a backward time in such a strange land?
If you’d come today you could have reached a whole nation.
Israel in 4 BC had no mass communication.
Don’t you get me wrong.
I only want to know.

Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,
Who are you? What have you sacrificed?
Jesus Christ Superstar,
Do you think you’re what they say you are?

Tell me what you think about your friends at the top.
Who’d you think besides yourself’s the pick of the crop?
Buddha, was he where it’s at? Is he where you are?
Could Mohammed move a mountain, or was that just PR?
Did you mean to die like that? Was that a mistake, or
Did you know your messy death would be a record breaker?
Don’t you get me wrong.
I only want to know.

Jesus Christ, Jesus Christ,
Who are you? What have you sacrificed?
Jesus Christ Superstar,
Do you think you’re what they say you are?
(Repeat many times)

Thank you Paul,

Oh yes, i understand what you mean. But to my mind, people don’t really choose to be a superstar…Public do. The proof is here. Did Jesus wished to be depicted as a rock star, or even a white person..? He may have laughed a bit from where he is. And sometimes haven’t ideed.

Lots of love.

The antithesis between the singer and the solemnity of the moment increase tension.I didnt saw the moovie, but I remember.Very provoking. But maybe people need little shok for waking up.

In 1974 Cyprus was in the middle of war and invasion.. I had never watched it as a whole. I remember reading in the papers that there was a big discussion about it. To be honest, I did not like the idea of Jesus as ..rock super star. Sorry, Paulo Coelho, you say you count it amonst your favorites. Of course, this is my personal opinion. LOVE, THELMA

I’ve never seen this one but I liked the song. My favourite musical is Rocky Horror Picture Show!!!… It’s not profound or anything but it just puts a smile on my face every time I see it.
