Weekly Free Association : The Winds

From the indistinct waters of the ocean, we now lift up our eyes to the unseen and omnipresent winds.
Symbolically, the Winds are first and foremost supernatural manifestations.
In Ancient Cultures they were identified with specific deities or wills of the gods. In Ancient Greece for instance, the harsh north wind Boreas abducts the daughter of the Athenian King Erechtheus - Oreithyia - and takes her to the Thrace, whilst the soft western wind Zephyr brings Psyche to Eros, the God of Love.

In the Bible, in the Ancient as well as the New Testament, the wind is often identified with the breath of God - and consequently his voice.
In the beginning of Times, it is said that the voice of God hovers over the surface of the indistinct primeval waters and that it is this wind that fertilizes the waters - the verb enabling the rest of the creation to manifest itself.

Yet, in many popular cultures, also emerges the view that takes the wind for the embodiment of transience and frivolity of men.
We seem then to see two visions collide : the vagabond winds of passion against the powerful verb of God.

Now you take the floor : what do you associate with the Winds?

Winds bring change. Whenever a storm rolls in, the winds precede it, giving us a signal of what lies ahead. That way, we can prepare for what is to come. Same as in life.

  2. 2 Paul from Austria

The wind as an element, is just as important as all the others… except that it has the ability to carry answers… all we have to do is feel them in our hearts…

The answer my friends, is blowing in the wind, Love Paul

  3. 3 Reshmi

I associate winds with complete freedom.

A windy, gusty day is the earth in a bad mood.

I agree with Paul in that sometimes, when you listen to the wind, it is as though it is speaking. Whispers on the wind. Somewhere in the whirling and whooing, something was said and you have to listen carefully to catch it.

When you think about it, nature and all its elements is fascinating and mesmerising.

I happened to come upon your blog while reading Brida and this question of yours particularly interested me.

The Wind is like a friend to me, I don’t know what else to call it. As a child I would talk to the wind, and to prove its presence, I would ask it to move in the trees and through my hair, and strangely enough after a couple of minutes it did, as though it was eager to stay in my company. I would love to sit outside and watch it play in trees, I would show my friends how to call the Wind, and they would be awed and fascinated. I was really proud to have a “friend” like it, something I knew was always with me.

It is still with me, I still feel it complaining to me when I stand on the balcony about how I have forgotten it, neglected it. Though it is true that I don’t want to believe in such childish things anymore I can not deny what I feel and I can not help but feel grateful to be blessed with such a friend. Though it hardly responds as often as it used to when I was a child, I am grateful to God to have given me a clearer sign that He is always watching over me.

It gives me one of the most beautiful feelings I have ever felt, the feeling of not being alone in this life.

    Loving your writing, Sabreena.

I associate the winds with Power and Freedom. There are as many winds as there are people in this world. Each of them with their own special Power and Freedom. The winds can be tornadic to soft and gentle and each one should be honored in their own right. Each one is a lesson if we just stop for a minute to receive it. I was so glad to see the “S” at the end of this word.

The wind to me is a physical form of love from God. It reassures me that I am not alone. It encourages me to keep on when things seem futile. I have always loved the wind so when a breeze comes up, I feel God’s arms of love wrapping around me. Pepper

They can be furious, blowing with a rage, but also tender like a kiss..So they are like Feelings to me.
i dont know why but i have associated the winds with the flute…and i see them also as Messengers..they bring a message, which we may not understand..
I also see them as compassion to those who dont have a home.
And also a ‘good morning’ with a breeze..

I associate winds with mental energy and “knowing”. As with the mind’s thoughts, winds are fleeting and sometimes difficult to capture and harness. They serve as an important reminder that we humans cannot control all that surrounds us. An important reminder to heed. I once wandered into the jungles of Mexico to attend a sitting at a “sweat-logdge” (tent). It was there that I discovered that the Mayans, (similar to other indigenous peoples) had “meanings” to their calendar, and dates of birth. The description that followed my birthdate was, “self-existing wind”.

PEACE. I’m a little bias regarding wind because I’m a Libra and this is my element so wind to me is the essence behind everything even though you cannot see it. It’s what fuels the fire. And the reason I associate it with peace is whenever I’m completely present I can always feel or hear the wind.

Well, Wind is not to be associated with. It cannot be associated with anything. It is the most vital of any thing we need to survive. Wind, water and heat are the three fundamental elements for the human survival. Without wind there could be nothing. Imagine the situation of living without wind.

Wind has a power and the power it possess are tremendous. It gives us momentary pleasure at the same time it also gives us cool and calmness when we get more heated up.

Wind is something related to change. The constant change cannot be easily felt with the help of wind. Wind can have many meangings in different culture and country but at the same time it does not mean anything at all too.

Wind has power to blow everything it sees, it is intelligent to see that whenever the environment needs it , it occurs. The wind is related to some extent with the change in the Environment.

To humans, wind is somehow related with the mood. A mood of the person changes depending upon the time and moment. Depending upon the context and situation. Depending upon the stress and anxiety one feels inside the body. Similarly, for a human wind can be related with the mood.

To Nature, wind can be associated as if it is the brain of the nature. One cannot live without the brain. The brain is vital for the existence of the Nature. May be when God existed; at that period, he build everything except the wind and then he realized later that there is something missing in the Nature. He then wanted soemthing to make it more romantic and more pleasant.

From the suggestion of other gods and from his own realization he saw the water but with no movement, he saw the trees but none of the leaves of the tree moved, he saw the clouds but none of the clouds move. He might have felt that, there is something missing- some music to the Nature.

For Nature, wind can be then related with the “Music”. Wind gives music to the environment. Without the music there is nothing existing in the Nature. With wind in Nature, leaves of the trees starts to sing, water in the lake, ocean and sea start to dance and clouds in the sky start to show the romantic color with rain, every now and then…

Wind can be easily broken down where “w” could mean weather, water, wonderful etc. “i” could mean investigation similarly, “n” could mean “Nature” lastly, “d” could mean dreams, darkness and destiny.

Therefore with the operation of the word “wind”, it can be concluded that- Wind is associated with the wonderful investigation by Nature to dream, to dance and to find destiny for humans.

We can learn a lot of things for ourselves by only observing the wind that puts the song in the lake, the wind which helps sail the boat in the ocean and the wind that takes dark cloud to its beautiful destination to show romantic climate of Nature.

It is true that the wind is an essential element for life to be created, but not the only one! On Mars, wind exists but yet they didn’t find life up there! So the wind is essential but not enough by itself. Some believes that it holds the voice of God, I say everything holds GOD in it, the voice of God is in all matter, God is the light itself, and as we all know Light needs nothing to travel, light needs no wind to transport it! The wind is simply a monitor showing all what we type on our keyboard! It reflects nature moods, it reflects our own moods! When I’m happy I love to drive and just let the wind play with my hair, it makes me feel free, it makes me feel connected, it means that the entire world is sharing my happiness, it makes me feel united with the universe. But then again when I’m sad, I feel like the wind will transport my feelings up high and get rid of them. The wind or more precisely air is essential for the sound can propagate, therefore the wind can be seen not as the communication tool such as the phone, but as the cable and the wires which transport the signals. Therefore the wind caries our sounds, our feelings, our memories, our history, and it can be harmful and helpful, it can be gentle or not, it can be sad or happy, it can be strong and weak, it can carry the cries of a defeated army, or the sounds of courage of a winning army, it can carry the tears or the smiles… the wind doesn’t carry God in it, the wind carries us, and God is within every one of us!

These are the first lines of a simple invocation of sacred space that I use in my work which originates in Peru but has many versions around the world.

The winds and their associated power animals invoke the forces through wich everything manifests - gravity, electromagnetism and weak and strong nuclear force.

I remember with great pleasure a poem of P.B.Shelley,Ode to the West Wind.I loved it.I found that the poet linked the power of the Wind to the idea of Liberty, one slave cannot be mighty, the wind was seen like a greek god, worshiped by the other elements of the nature. Also he talked about the infinite, the wind cannot vanish,it has no beginning and no end.bye

The active part of the air element in Nature.
Sometimes we experience it´s destructive, sometimes we experience it as cleansing or whatever we experience. The Winds catalyse a letting go that creates a balance that needs to happen from Nature´s perspective.

To me the wind is what brings changing seasons and emotions…everything positive… :) I think it takes away all worries and heart-ache, and the feeling of being ’stuck’ that one feels from time-to-time… It reminds us that there’s something greater, something that’ll help see life afresh… that it just requires a little something to shake it all up … a gush of wind does that; always makes me happy, in the middle of no-matter-what… even if just for a moment… :)

  44. 44 Presence

Like Sabreena, I too associate the wind with childhood memories, and most recently as the co-creator with the power I also have. When I loudly requested that a change be made, a windstorm, a rogue gust of winds beat on the branches of the trees out the window that I was looking upon at 3 am one morning. It was as if to answer and transform the very thing I asked to have changed. I could almost say that I evoked the winds to alter this particular outcome in my favor! While some could say ‘that’s nuts!” I have captured the memory in my minds eye as if it were the truth, and I believe it! Since then, whenever I pray, or make a request or have a conversation requiring an answer, I’ll see the presence of the wind, through tall grasses or waves on a lake or always through the leaves of flowers and tree brances, and I know that I’ve been heard and answered.

  45. 45 cat forsley

The wind moves us to change
it can bring great Flux into our lives or leave us speechless in it’s power to move things along as it should…..
When i Hear the wind—it makes me feel safe- strange huh? It makes me think that everything is happening as it should be…….
I associate the wind with God moving things around ….and He has many reasons - we will never know about…To me The Wind is like a Thunderstorm, I feel safe in knowing that God and Our Universe have important things to say- Mother Nature knows best!!!!!

My family travels a lot,one summer my mother told me to closed the car window, i heard my uncle stop her and said to her let her be and told my mother how he wished he can read my thoughts. I remember i like to feel the wind in my face and think of all the story my grandfather told me. Twice i experienced a typhoon, all my friends were praying that it will stop. Believe it or not i felt excited when i heard its powerful whistle and thunders. And i like to think of myself like a bamboo wristling with the wind.

voice. or simply words. several years ago, i had a spiritual dream. the voice said ‘do you believe in God?’ before answering, i opened my eyes because i felt wind on my right ear. very soft wind though. like whispering. so i associate wind with voice. also i am taking voice training now. before singing, i have to practice breath control. i feel like i am in harmony with air while doing so.

The enveloping wind is for me a source of wonder and comfort I don’t anticipate or fear it just have a complete respect for it’s mighty powers, I love the sounds, movement and energy of it I like the vulnerability of being encircled by it, the cold winter chills the warm spring breezes the hot summer blows and all it’s other hues
Born out of genesis this captive energy has been roaming the earth ever since reveling the sounds of past and present, the whispers of birth the pleas and laughs of countless generations.
The winds bring the echoes of times to our reality and if we listen attentively we can hear the rushing of the first waters grooving the earth forming the rivers and seas we can hear the sound of the first light exploding into existence. In constant transformation and evolution the wind never dies just merges and renew earths energies ,like a breath to a heart beat.
In perpetual movement this movers and shakers in nature are the guardians of the invisible world where all possibilities are a reality .
It is a merciless implacable force but I love the wind ,it’s ever present in my life, just same days again I was whirled all night in winds up to 120 klmh which unfortunately brought the death of one of my peacocks, such is the price of our existence.

Forgive me for digressing somewhat from the specific subject at hand, but I would really appreciate some views and opinions on an observation that I have made. While we are repeatedly told to think positively, to visualize our desires and in general to assume that our wishes will be granted, I have personally not found these techniques to work for me. Specifically, it is when I imagine the worst, and when I am worried or pessimistic about an outcome that all turns out quite well. I have used this technique all my life and achieved quite a bit of success. Has anyone else made this observation ?. Again, any views and opinions would be very much appreciated.

I associate wind with Tara - Buddha of wisdom and compassion. She is very swift in her actions, like wind. She always helps very quickly whenever I turn to her. She is a Mother, or maybe it is better to say she is one of the many manifestations of the Great Mother. The Great Mother manifested herself for me in a form of Buddha Tara. The compassion of the mother for her child is so great that she immediately responds to the cry. She can not bear a thought of her child suffering. Her action will be swift like the wind to take away any pain.

I was looking at the trees I can see from my opened window one night. I felt like talking to them, so I concentrated on one at each time, said hello and the wind made them wave back at me. So I suppose wind is like the voice of the world. How ever mute or loud, and even if we can’t hear it, we can read its language through movement.

Wind is also like time, you can’t see it, but you can see the causes of its touch. Wind is like the neverending movement that keeps the universe going. The energy of creation. Life force. Then what keeps the wind moving? Magnetism, I suppose.

I associate wind with the ultimate love and wisdom. All the words of wisdom and love have already been said infinite times on earth and the words are still carried around by the wind. As a child the wind carried the smell of the Sea for me. It was the dinner bell as the smell of food floated softly down the hill to where I would play outside.
