The master is like bell

By Paulo Coelho

A student who had recently arrived at the monastery, went to master Nokami and asked him how he should prepare for the exercise of meditation.

“Do not be afraid to ask” – was the reply.

“And how can I learn to ask?”

“A master is like a bell. If you strike it lightly, all you will heard is a gentle vibration. But if you bang it freely, it will resonate loudly and shake you to the depths of your soul. Ask with courage, and only stop when you obtain the answer you sought.”

  • My dear Wanbliska, dont be afraid to ask and ask again ,and again if tha is necessary, till the other one gives you the answer..Maybe the others dont respond immediately because they are afraid to answer or they are afraid of the answer, and what might this answer mean to them..
Yes, you are right, God always listens and responds..
We should 'hear' the sings more carefully..

  • dear Annie,
I understand you quite well, cause I’m a person that have problems to ask. So imagine that I have more ones when the person has not answered once. I could feel it’s not easy for anyone to answer straight to my plea.
I think the only peculiar being that always listen and answer to me, in a way or others, is God.

Dear Paulo, I’ll think about “banging the bell freely”, even if people restrain me.

    Love to you all.

  • The truth is i meet many people that are afraid to ask something they dont know..maybe because they think that they will appear to others stupid..i believe there is no such thing as a stupid question..if i dont know something i ask..i dont care if i may seem to others stupid..

Like the children..they never stop till they learn what they seek to find…
