Dear Petri,
Just want to say that hearing about examples like yours makes me feel humble because you are actually living what you believe in. My prayers are with you.

We are all born from the physical suffering of our Mothers, out of respect for their sacrifice, I do not think it necessary to then deliberately self inflict suffering (emotional or phsyical) on ourselves or anyone else.

We are no longer in the Dark Ages. I do not believe that we were given the gift of life so that we could suffer. Be careful what you wish for, because you might get it.

5 1/2 years ago at age 42 I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis which immediately sent me on a path I never thought I would take. I felt I had no other choice. That path has lead me directly to Paulo's quote of today. This has been a trial for me as my body's nervous system deteriorates and I can't do much of what I was accustomed to, like getting old very quickly. The actual trial/lesson has been to "suffer without fear" because the suffering was not ending. At first I didn't think it could be done and I vacillated between believing and not believing but what did I have to lose? Only fear. Our heroes in our myths and stories show us how it is done but these are myths and stories! Today I am not all the way without fear but I am far enough to see that it is certainly possible. Think about needing to changing almost every belief of yourself you ever thought to be true because they were almost all lies. I knew, from somewhere inside, that I had freedom to gain no matter what my body was going through. Without MS I would have never sought this level of freedom because I thought I already had it. I didn't. Not everyone with MS takes this path and not everyone needs an illness to discover freedom.

I spend the physical energy I have today helping others with their pain and being a model of bravery when I can.

Peace to All

The meaning of suffering is hard to grasp. Once I worked as a volunteer for awhile with the "Mother Teresa's sisters", The Sisters of Charity, in Calcutta, and learned that each of the sisters had a severe ill person somewhere in the world, dedicating their suffering for this sister. They explained how it gave them energy. I got a new perspective on suffering. Mother Theresa believed that one can give one's suffering up for the benefit of another individual. It's easier to suffer knowing it can benefit somebody else.

An Ethical Dilemma
If someone who loves life is actually dying...
they will choose suffering. If someone who is worn by suffering is suffering they choose death... unless the loved ones who sustain the dying person are hopeful then the dying must live out their life in suffering/ unless they convince the living that they must be allowed to die...just an observation.

Some folks choose to suffer for it makes them feel alive. Some folks avoid suffering at all costs because of deep wounds of unbearable reality...and they have to split their personality to keep surviving and Living ON
....another observation....HUMMMMMMM.
