It’s a tragic picture; the body of Abel and the figure of Eve remind me of the Pietà of Michelangelo; this means maybe that the pain that mothers suffer have always been the same, since the beginning of times.
Adam is astonished and can’t even move one of his fingers; Cain (the murderer) realizes what has done and has a terrific expression.
All the picture is painted with two colours; yellow-red and blue to show the opposite feelings, love-hate; good -evil.
Dear Mr Coelho, where do you take all this beautiful pictures?

I believe the greatest misfortune is the loss of a child…the pain i believe is unbearing…that no amount of time will ever heal..
no sunrise has a meaning , and no rain can wash away the pain…

I need to read about painters .I dont know much ,I dont want to say stupid things. This William Blake wasnt appreciated at all during his life time, but, through your blog ,I have ocasion to see his master pieces,in paintings.Do you think to comment also some of his literary works?I remember his poems “The Lamb”,or “The Tiger”.I wrote one poem on the blackboard, during course in faculty, and at the exam,I had to discuss the same poem. Was easy.

if anyone could realize the sin beforehand…we would never lose the paradise..
question is why there are desires, passions, jealousy, cravings, hate, etc..?

The feeling of paradise is there because we have desires, passions, hate etc…..Good would not be recognized as good if there is no Evil

We all know the story of Abel and Kain, the archetype of fratricide, jealousy, rivalry, aggression and the “mark on the forehead” our mark…the destiny of humanity.
I think of John Steinbek’s ‘East of Eden’and “Demian” by Hermann Hesse.
Blake always makes the utmost to present their emotions and tragic moment.

There is no greater tragedy than loosing a child. And to know that it was also your other son… it’s sad.

I’m not familiar with the paiter but why is there a shovel? It’s nice and it’s dark and if you look at it long enough you can really see what the characters in the painting is feeling.

Theres a grave and shovel because in genesis abel was the first person to die therefore the concept of burial was inknown that is until God’s command. Two turtledoves flew down in front of Adam and Eve, one dying when it landed. The other dug a hollow place and moved the dead one into it, hence Adam and Eve did likewise to Abel’s body.
