Today’s Question by Aart Hilal

by Paulo Coelho on September 24, 2008

How would you describe the emptiness within modern people that you fulfill with your books?

First of all, I don’t think my books fill other people’s emptiness. This would suggest that I’m giving people answers about their lives and this couldn’t be more removed from the aim of my books.

It’s the opposite actually. When I embark in a new book, I’m always guided by a question, it is my Santiago somehow. I never pretend though to have exhausted all the possibilities by the end of my books. I always have this feeling of having traced a path, my own, in an uncharted terrain. For instance, in my new book”The Winner is Alone” that will be released in Brazil in August and in Sweden next year, I was intrigued by the world of fashion. The book somehow enabled me to dive into this universe – yet this doesn’t mean I’ve explored all the facets of fashion. It’s only my view at the end of the day.

Dear Paulo,

I agree with you. Of course I speak as usualy only for myself.

Your books do not fill emptiness, it would be too simple, as your books find place even there where emptiness does not exist.

For me your books represent precious wisdom that lead us from away emptiness, that open door to new paths, that mirrors our daily lives…but not fill emptiness.

Love
Luce

as you can see here with those answers, there are many ways to understand a book,a story, the words.it seems that depends of each one,our own story.you share your questions, your knowledges with us,it’s also sometimes a hard job.about me, your books just make me secure that i’m not crazy, weird ect..i saw many things in my life, differents of yours,of course,i’m just happy there is someone, who says, who writes, and takes this freedom with courage, to open some doors.i still try to keep in my mind many stories as mr Copernic and mr Galilée and the others..that’s true we live on a ball,a crazy idea!i think they saw with their mind before to see with their eyes.and it seems there are many things in life, that we can only see with our mind ,maybe just now..there is not fear in the garden of the knowledge.

Well, more than filling an emptiness, i think your books ignite a flame in our otherwise dormant torches. its like a wake up call for a sleeping soul, and the most powerful indeed!:)They also answer most of my questions or rather point out a beautiful path which helps me escape through a lot of my miseries!:)
Thankyou for doing what you do, and for teaching us all how to LOVE yet again!

Modern psychology would agree with your belief in not trying to impose your answers to others. Let me prove to you how we give each other answers all the time, by telling a joke. Ok? Here goes.

***

Do you know what the psychologist answers if you ask him what time it is? …
‘What do you feel yourself’!!!

It is said that all secrets and magical powers go from ..mouth to mouth tradition and from a ‘Master’ to a disciple. So I consider you as my ‘teacher’ [a big ..burden I put on your shoulders], but as dearest Paul from Austria says above, at the end, you may feel .. ‘lighter’ and free to fly, with the certainty that people have read your books [until now 100 million !!] and your message has reached the whole World. LOVE.
What we will do with your teachings is up to the people too understand the ‘essence’ of life.
LOVE,
THELMA
