The culture of fear

by Paulo Coelho on October 6, 2008

So it seems that we are living in a culture of fear.

Before it was the terrorist attacks and now we see this economic crisis that engulfs the whole world.
My point is that we understand less and less what is happening. Personally, the more I read about this crisis the more I get lost.

Not only that: I’m reading about Pakistan, Afghanistan, Irak and the Middle East and it seems that people are losing control. When this happens we see the rise of a culture of fear. And this is what I want you to share: do you feel we are living a moment where fear is being used against us?

Don’t you have the feeling that besides our personal fear, there’s an atmosphere of doubt that is imposing this world of crisis to us?

I would like to hear your opinion on collective fear.

Though I do feel that we are living in a culture where our fears are being aggressively used against us, I have to say I am proud at the new awakening I am experiencing in the people around me. People seem to be wakening to the consciousness as a whole, and opening their minds to new possibilities and healthier ways of living, mind body and soul. I was just traveling around Europe by myself and the kindness I was shown by strangers was one of the greatest lessons of my life so far. We all have our own personal battles and fears while trying to find our way in this world, but i believe that energy attracts energy, so if one by one we can remember to be patient with one another, embracing everyone we come across with love and positivity, we can change the world as we know it.

Beautifully said Stacy!
We need to be open and accepting of all people!
Yes the world is changing and we are all awakening to higher states of being, to Christ consciousness.

No fundo andava tudo a tentar superar o outro. Toda a gente quer superar toda a gente e ninguém tenta confrontar-se consigo mesmo, poucos tentam superar-se a si mesmos. Esta é a principal crise. O restante mal decorre tão somente disso.

Indeed the Culture of fear is quite alarming if we begin to explore it.
My personal solution is not to read the papers or listen to the news.
Anyway how much of it is 'real' and how much of it is embellished in order to keep us fearful and separate and easier to manipulate?
Our hearts are like a vessel to be filled. If we choose to fill it with fear there is no room for love. My journey is to empty my heart of fear in order to allow it to be filled with Love through the grace of God and Life. Is fear an illusion of the mind?

As a child who suffered at the hands of violent adults-I know something of the absolute destructive power of fear both in the singular and collective. Fear paralyses indivudual thought and freedom. It is the ultimate weapon of those, who if they succeed will destroy the world and its role in the Universe.
Collective fear,is especially frightening because of its subtelty; that we are susceptible to our need to follow the great whether Kings,Emperors,Football Teams,Celebrity et al is obvious.
One day it is a single discriminatory objection, the next day it is a Yellow star. The next day a civilisation disappears.

Bonjour Paulo,
This last comment I made in december 08 is quite in lines with your “culture of fear”.
You make allusion to that in “The winner stands alone” with the cinema industry ‘ ..To avoid any non-lucrative wars and to promote agression between countries or companies where they feel this might bring them more power and more monies.”

Maybe the bubble is coming to bursting point…

I haven’t been watching the news at all lately. I like to see what is going on, however, I take much of what is being said with a grain of salt these days.
I always grab a paper whenever I am on a plane, and I am surprised at the content of the news in countries such as Thailand and in the Middle East. They seem to be so much better than the Western ones.

Thank you for the description of FEAR, False Evidence Appearing Real.

You are absolutely right, in my opinion, sometimes imagination can be distorted or manipulated. And as thought acts as pre-suggestion, the reality perceived also becomes distorted.

There is a simple way of combatting fear. By working our personal gardens. By risking. By loving. If each of us were to work our gardens, we would live in a beautiful world.

Dear Mr. Paulo,
This time in society can be compared to all others, manipulation of the people indirectly with fear is a key element to controlling them. Coporate leaders collaborate for economic gain while the government becomes a puppet.

p.s. I read The Alchemist last week and have found your blog by chance. I wish to converse with you through e-mail, if you have the time.

I was born in 1947. I remember that, 40 years ago, the “culture of fear” was completely absent, especially in North America. Here, in Canada, people actually were very optimistic and felt that the world was becoming a much better place. To the south, in the United States, people were gaining enough courage to go into the streets and fight against the government.

Now, it is precisely the opposite. The media is owned and controlled by a lot fewer people than it was 40 years ago, and the people are encouraged to fear just about everything.

I do not claim to know who was actually responsible for 9/11, and maybe I never will know, but that event has been capitalized upon by various governments and media outlets to create a continuing climate of fear ever since. The people who have most of the wealth and power want to keep it all to themselves, and a little bit of fear is a wonderful way to stifle dissent.

Well, we do, we deffinitelly live in the culture of fear!
Fear is the strongest weapon of todays` centres of power, by the mightest people on Earth! The weapon of mob control!
Sincerelly, I think that many events that happened in the recent past are FAKE!!! The Twin Towers Of WTC, bomb attacks in the European capital cities! This, just to prove that we are not safe anywhere on this planet, that only THEM can protect us! THEY, the same men that attack, and then defend! Crash of Wall Street stock-exchange, pleassee… They earned or will earn double money on that! Yes, now THEY removed rising competition, which will never more dare to invest money, because EVEN THE STRONGEST stock-exchange IS NO LONGER SAFE!
Controled by fear, people never dare to take action, not even in their own life, and especially not in life of the state! So, instead of living their own dreams, people are distracted to the modern world menace TERRORISM! Therefore, innocent people become victims of bombs, they DIE!!! This is the most severe consequence of the culture of fear! But the mankind is also a victim of this, because they are KILLED in their brains and hearts, living like zombies!!
Conflicts in smaller countries are mostly used for this, such a situation is here, Montenegro, Serbia and Kosovo! Innocent people die, get killed, territories are being taken away, a heart of the nation is pierced with a spear with a sign written all over it PROTECTION OF HUMAN RIGHTS! World fights against terrorism and recognizes the “state” built in blood and terror. Irony? One of many! Vulgar display of power fills peoples` hearts with fear and hate! How can there be any sense for LOVE?!
That is how money became more important than love, simply because we don`t feel her in the eyes of other people! Money comes on scene as a substitute, makes us feel safer! Therefore, people only think of money making, becoming workholics, working everyday like machines in some offices (that also raise the feeling of self respect)!
And so, no time to dedicate to yourself, even if there would be any, we are tired (trully or we use it as an excuse)! No thinking, no dreaming, no fighting for your dreams, but working and fighting for THEIR benefits packed in FIGHT FOR HUMAN RIGHTS, YOUR COUNTRY`s ideals, that will be traded the very next moment, when the price is bigger!
THERE ARE NO MORE DREAMS FOR A MAN, BUT FOR A SLICE OF HUMAN FLESH!

I agree with Bernard. I found myself anxious and fretful on a daily basis when I subscribed to the newspaper, watched the news on television, and talked about it. Since watching and reading “The Secret” a couple of years ago, I realized that I always sort of believed in the law of attraction, but never really fully practiced it. When I started consciously working on it, I naturally did away with negative programming in my life, via newspapers, etc.

I truly believe that the “news” is geared to keeping us living in fear, and as such is basically a control gimmick. The human tendancy is to naturally gravitate toward the negative programming, not the positive. It has to be a conscious effort, and one has to maintain a diligent desire to turn ones’ thoughts around and filter out the negative and fear-driven input.

Since doing this, my life is dramatically more peaceful, and rather than fear constantly weaving in and out of my every thought, I find I have so much positivity coming in from so many directions. Am I living in a “fool’s paradise?” Perhaps. But the Tarot shows the fool as a happy vagabond, knapsack on his shoulder, gazing skyward with a smile on his face, one toe posed at the edge of a cliff.

I wish to go when it is my time to go, with a smile on my face.

I think most important nowadays is to commit to practice one’s own practice to create more harmony and peace to this world. This world needs love and compassion and religions and practitioners have great responsibility and challenge to create more harmony and love.

What a great task to fulfill, don’t you think?

Don’t allow fear to control your thinking. Accept the fear, but aks yourself: What would love do now?

Oh yes, I believe there is a strong culture of fear right now. Consciousness is all about where we focus our attention. Change our focus of attention and our consciousness changes with it. For me, what I am concentrating on right now is the powerful question, “What am I willing to be accountable for?” This changes my attention from one of being a victim where I have no control over anything, to a focus of what I do have control over. How am I going to show up today to be a light worker in the world? How am I going to volunteer to be used by Spirit to use my gifts in service to the world? This is all that I have control over. By focusing my attention on this I tap into the abundance available in God’s kingdom and become a partner in spiritual alchemy. It is a powerful partnership and reminds me that I am God’s precious child. This is why we chose to be here at this time.

i think fear arises if one will not come out of the reality he is believing. i mean, fear comes from a person because, basically, he does not know what will happen next or he has no idea of what that thing is. a person finds fear because he is afraid of moving forward.

hmm, i have this belief, “Do not fear, just only Believe.” And yes, I am pertaining on believing on Him.

People fear what they cannot understand and fully comprehend – these things are potentially a risk. For someone to have power over another, it requires fear. Like in the panopticon, the one in power sees everyone but is never to be seen.

Without fear, there would be no control. And without control, there would be no society. At least not one that consists of people of today. People, who are capable of and even inclined to be evil when fearless ie. in absolute power (as the Stanford Prison Experiment suggests).

This is a very important and fascinating subject and I have so much more to say, but dont have the time for it right now. I will be working around this subject tho in the future for sure!

Dear Heart thank you for the information given.
Dear Elisabeth Delage, I think, that in the Google, you can find easily and quickly information that we should need a lot of time and money to acquire. It is easier to ‘draw’ information impersonally from the Internet by .. fragments and create the puzzle of such matters that are under secrecy and oaths. THERE IS NOTHTING HIDDEN UNDER THE SUN!
The ‘Human Rights Declaration’ is ratified for a long time now, but those, who are in charge to respect it, are the first to violate it, in every country and every way. They speak, I think, for the Laws of the Old Testament, but they forgot that Jesus’ teachings, which were the supplementary- as He had said- are based on LOVE and not on this World’s material power.
Have a nice Sunday afternoon.

A remedy to fear is courage, self confidence, hope, love.
Only few say abou this but it is very true that we people have these virtues. Little is being done to develop them much is being done to increase fear. Inflicting fear makes people prone to being controlled. Who does it and why is a big question.
I believe personally that how some wise people say the fear would vanish due to a real understaning of our nature. It is said that the night is the darker before dawn. I think that we really go to something as a planet and population.
In Pilgrim You tell about a vision which shows some hardship of Earth that is to come soon. In Valkyries You are telling about a man living in the dessert who “has been trained to act when the time comes” and about open gates to Heaven. I am much concerned about meaning of these words. It is aobvious that You Sir have something particular in mind what You know.

I don’t know if fear is being imposed on us and I don’t think that it matters al that much. But I can understand that people experience fear for the uncertainty of what’s to come.
But fear of the future is very unnecessary. What are we afraid of? The future? Afraid of change?
Whatever change will come before us, just remember that you’re a human being, get your sense of reality and power back. Step out of the box. Don’t see yourself as seperate but you’re a part of this world and it is up to you to grasp it with your entire heart and soul and find out you’re real place on this planet.
The only fear is in your mind don’t allow it to take control

Thelma, you bring up an interesting question. I fully agree with your skepticism to secret societies. The Masons pretending to be all about charity, and then in a sub tile way, they promote, in my opinion; evil.

If you read president George Bush Sr’s self biography, you will find he is a member of an American secret society, which evolved from the Ivy league’s, called ‘Skulls and Bones’. In fact, it has been suggested, president Bill Clinton and president George W. Bush Jr, also to be members of ‘Skulls and Bones’.

So, how can an exclusive, elitist boys club for men, gain so much power? Some has suggested, by killing presidents/candidates, lacking this membership. ‘Skulls and Bones’ dosn’t it sound like a title of a horror movie! You can find more information about it, simply by making a Google search.

We live in suspicious times. We need an identity card for almost all interactions; a secret code number to allow us entry into some areas and thumb prints tested electronically for others. Everything today keeps other people out – sound proof rooms, bamboo blinds and room dividers give us privacy and security from prying eyes and ears. This overwhelming need for security prevents us from interacting with others in a normal way. It erodes trust and generosity. It makes us treat everyone as a criminal and cringe from anyone who tries to get close to us or even help us.
For those of us who live well, security is a big issue. We lock our gates and our front doors at all times; have a watchman to prevent trespassers and dogs to roam around and growl loudly at anyone trying to come in. We are scared of strangers – they are a threat to our well- being and security. If we think about it, what are we so scared about? That someone might steal our valuables, possessions, and destroy something that is precious to us. A security guard at the gate makes us feel safe.
Last week, in a crowded mall, a little child taught me a lesson. The child was obviously lost. She looked here and there and then spotted me. I smiled at her. She came up to me and hugged me around my knees and stayed there quite comfortably . She obviously thought that I was her mother. I was amused and put one arm around the child and looked around for her mother. When the mother finally found us, she was very upset. She pulled the child away from me, gave her a good scolding and glared at me as if I was a kidnapper. The strange thing was that I didn’t look anything like this child’s mother who was half my age. Neither was I wearing a similar kind or colour of clothing. The acceptance and trust this child gave me, and her mother’s fear, made me realize just how insecure we all are around each other now.
Our pride in having electrified gates and sophisticated alarm systems should not make us into people who no longer find any good or security in human relationships. The true things that give us security are not heavy men with guns and super alarms, but the warmth and friendship of people. Loyalty, trust, generosity and gentleness – these are what truly give us a sense of security. A guard at the gate may keep our possessions safe, but it is people who keep us safe.

My dear Paulo Coelho, I was reading today in the internet about Secret Societies, the Brotherhood and then I reached the Oath of the Masons. Is it not based on the fear?? They ask their members to obey to their decisions, to protect the mason/brother in the Courts even by concealing the truth or saying half truth and I understand they do it because they are under Oath and fear the consequences and, of course in order to gain material things, power, control over the lives of others, positions and wealth. How can they- since they call themselves MYSTICS forget the most important thing in Creation, which in all religions is Love – not doubt that they are in the wrong Path? How is it possible to confuse White with Black?

The current economic crisis, is a clear proof of what collective fear can actually do. The falling of stock prices…everything is a product of collective fear.

As for what is happening in the Middle East, I can honestly say, and this coming from the heart of the ME; Jordan… I stopped following what is happenning a long time ago, becuase all it does, is cause fear and depression.

Fear is simply the absence of love. When love of self and love of other is missing there is fear. Fear is also self inflicted. We make a choice every moment to either love or allow fear to come in.

What we are experiencing now is not a global conspiracy to create fear, it is call to awaken. It is a call to choose love. It is a call to recognize who we truly are. When we choose love…. No when we choose to be love, we choose to live from the heart and there is no room for fear.

If we want to change this world that we live in, we must change who we are in this world. If we want to leave this path of self and planetary destruction we must choose another path of self discovery. We must choose to discover that at our very core we are love, we are peace, we are stillness. This is reality. The time is now, to see this as reality.

As love,

Cheryl

Fear takes different forms depending on where you are standing in this planet. For example a family in Sudan is worried today of the food they will eat tomorrow and have no sense of the current economic crisis. A farmer is worried of the current climate change and his only fear is if it will rain or shine tomorrow. A student today is worried that after working so hard, he may not find the job he dreamed of. In the developing world, people are worried of the current escalation in the price of commodity mainly foodstuff. It is strange to look at the fear of rich nations, whose fear is to lose part of their wealth. I strongly believe that nations that have shared their wealth with their people have nothing to worry about since the risk has been diversified in different sectors of the economy. What is the use of saving, investing having a social security if at the end of the day it is to create more fear instead of providing us with a peace of mind and a sense of security?

Jesse D'Alessio October 10, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Oi Paulo! Nice to read your question… I do agree that fear is being used as a tool of manipulation to acquiesce the masses. Here in the US many people are driven by the fear of economic loss, i.e., losing their homes, their jobs, etc or the fear of terrorism brought to their front door. I think that this state of fear that is moved along by alarmist media and embitters people and dampens their inherent creativity, faith, hope, and joy as children of the Universe.

When I am going through hardship I often think of the metaphor of Santiago in The Alchemist. Here we have a sheltered, naive youth who travels from the Spanish countryside to Morocco. In particular, I enjoyed the part of the story when Santiago is robbed in the bazaar. This loss and the subsequent year of hard work are essential to his development as a human and spiritual dreamer.

When I am in a position at work where I feel the strain of monotony such as Santiago polishing crystal glasses… I try to stay open to inspiration as I am being trained. If instead I were to dwell in the fear… fear of not realizing my dreams, fear of not being able to support those I love, fear of the unknown I would be a radically different person.

Fear can be equated to a poison. A venom with the potential to paralyze the strongest of us. I think that the key though is to build up an antibody. Fear can and must be overcome. As more of us develop this antibody, we have the potential to become a contagious force assisting others to push through the fear. We can become buoys, examples of people living and walking with the light.

How many of us were once afraid of the dark? Is this the first of many shades of fears we encounter in life? And what is it to be afraid of the dark? Perhaps it is the unknown, the potential for threat, the potential for pain. In contrast, love, hope, joy… each of these can act as a small point of light in that darkness. Together they are like a candle. In a group, united with our brothers and sisters, we transform from single flames into the almighty sun.

A Japanese friend once told me that in our light we are each like a small diamond and that diamonds when placed side by side will mirror each others fire and sparkle that much brighter.

We are living in an era of unprecedented connectivity with the rest of the world. We are also living in an era of fear where isolationism and xenophobia is subtly promoted. “It’s us and them.” One of the first steps is to realize our unity. Arab, American, Chinese, Russian, Jew, Brazilian… we all smile, love, cry, and laugh. We are one people with one common origin. We are brothers and sisters living within the ruins of the cathedral of separation, a vast, dark structure devoid of light. The cathedral of fear and separation, “The unknown is dangerous,” an ancient mantra is inscribed on it’s walls.

It’s time to step out of the dark and, as you would put, become the Warriors of Light that we are meant to be. Together as one family.

Um abraço,

Jesse

Hi Paulo and Everyone,

As it continues to hit the fan around the world it is looking more and more like there is going to be a truly massive change in the world. A time of cleansing and re-balancing. The themes of prophecy and spiritual unity have already emerged here.

I have the visual image of a phoenix arising out of the fire.

How long that will take is anyone’s guess. Years not months though.

What we are getting is a real and live demonstration that the old way of doing things simply does not work. A game of global dominoes where each falling piece impacts on another in a domino run.

In a sense the Lord of the Rings trilogy has much of the essence of how we are all bound by fear and greed.

“In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.
One Ring to rule them all, One Ring to find them,
One Ring to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie.”

Even if we don’t like it {fear}; it can become our “precious”. It is a clinging faculty of the mind and not the heart.

Opening the heart center seems like a good thing to do. If we all do it, it will help.

I guess the question then is what will the world look like after the tsunami? Up to us.

When all this started to kick off. I had dreams not of despair but of hope. A long trek into the mountains of Morocco with many twists and turns and a great chasm to leap over. All it took was self belief.

Hope then is the antidote to fear. For where there is hope there is always the dawn of a new day. Better get down into my chemistry lab and brew up some elixir of hope.

Best wishes,
Alan

I agree re Greenspan. Creating a dependency on cheap money and then taking it away. Bound to be a crash.

Bank globilisation underway.

in fact the wrong thing with the culture of fear, and what i read here sometimes,it’s maybe that we can’t do anything, that we are paralysed, and that we can let doing again some bullshits.for me this is just not true, everyday around us, as we can,we can participate.how? first with our words, our rights also…i’m sure that we can fix something with peace of mind, and stay attentives.what am i doing now,i try to find a better way for some old people, even if for some people it’s not the good time, because they are busy with the crisis, for me of course it’s the good time,i love those fights, even if sometimes i’m tired and they let me to believe that it’s too big or to late.it’s not true that all.

yes paulo !

culture of fear, fear comes from guilt, humanity stands accused of overindulgence, of over exploitation, of greed at a scale where people amass billions of dollers ( what the shit for ) , humanity will pay the price.

individuals will suffer or sail thru, choice is theirs to make, those who are sensible would start to lessen their needs. if goverenments want to really deal with terror without terrorising the whole world, they will have to risk people loosing their lives. freedom and dignity must be upheld. but perhaps it’s too late, a catastrop is unavoidable; hope those magical powers u are so fond of, are able to retain things worth retaining.

We’re fine. Its only money. Its only a fight between those who want a multi-polar world, after the twin towers fell on 9/11 (symbolic of the two post-WW2 super-powers), and George’s silly attempt to cling to a uni-polar world with the USA as the dominant hegemony. He fell for patriarchal theism, after all we tried to do to help him. So, with the Swiss controlling the money supply, it will all work out.

I’m having a strange feeling these days. It’s not fear it’s just …a kind of weird feeling! First I thought it was me and made all the inner analizes to find out what was wrong with me.
But there’s nothing wrong except for the fact that I moved to another house..a better, bigger house and in a nice neighbourhood.
So, after a long exame inside me I conclude that the weird feeling is related to the crazy world we are living in.
I don’t understand what is happening to the world either. I just know that we have basically two big and important crisis: ecological and economical. But the feeling I have is that there is more than people say, something..I don’t know, odd!

Hello dear warriors of the soul,

It seems as the planetary awakening taking place is causing all the millenia old structures that where there to keep us confined are breaking up. Causing chaos in general and dismay to those who sought to control others. It is well konw that no nation could control the whole world by itself therefore they created hemispheres dominated by the one faction or the other. And where it seems as they would fight eachtothere to the death, behind the scenes they are in agreement with one another. The fear of any kind of dictator was allways that people would unite against him, therefore they allways seek to divide people, to create a situation where people that could join forces for a common goal are turned into adversarys.
We will see that the many spiritual loners are growing in numbers and reach a critical mass reaching out to oneanother.
At first the stranglehold the rich and powerfull elite excerts over the lives and resoursces will be questioned.
The next will be that people will become less and less susceptible to the disinformation that keeps them in a permanent state of anxiety.
People will come to their senses with the many ways explored to uncovered the truth about ourselves.
Soon the ones who left countles people in the dark will be exposed as one who sought to control the main population and the vast rescources they claimed for there own gain will be brought back into the hand of the people who need them the most.
For a long time they seemed to go unchallenged but trough this financial crisis reality caught up with them leaving them in awe for the forces of live.
We will see the end of a millenialong domination of a smal minority as their ways of controlling and dividing us are exposed to the general public.
Eventually we will live in what i call the second paradise.

Heavenly greetings from Boomfriend Ruerd
