Weekly Free Association : Diamonds

by Paulo Coelho on October 20, 2008

Diamonds are the most precious of all precious stones. Hence their name in Latin: regina gemmarum “the queen of the gems”. In virtual all societies, diamonds are associated with perfection and purity. Plato described the axis of the world as a diamond column rising to the skies. In popular traditions diamonds are supposed to make people invisible, cast away bad spirits and draw feminine favors.

In the traditional symbolism of the precious stones, diamonds are associated with the sun. Hildegarde de Bingen (1098 – 1179) stated that “the devil sees in this stone its enemy since it resists to all his endeavors: that’s why the devil hates it day and night”.

Lonicerus, a Renaissance botanist, thought that diamonds could even stop wars, strife and be able to protect us from any poison or temptations bad spirits could bring.

Now you take the floor: what do you associate with diamonds?

Coal and diamonds both share the same essential substance: carbon. For me, diamonds are symbolic of the Christ-Self that is attained through a period of repeated purification and distillation. The alchemists study this process of transformation in depth, showing how dross (coal) is subjected to heat, water and air to dissolve its cellular structure and then allow for the elemts to come together in a new formation that is pure and indestructible (the diamond). I received a diamond engagement ring that is too big for my finger. I was going to go and have it properly sized and God stopped me and said: No, you have to grow into it by growing to maturity in Christ. I still see a lot of coal and the process of transformation is not easy but I have the assurance that I will reach the diamond stage eventually because of that engagement ring.

Mostly I think about a diamond when I tell somebdy about the truth of God, I say that it has many faces, like a Diamond, talking about the diversity of ways to get to know God!!!
Other than that I really don’t think about diamonds that much, even though I am a woman!!! I did read that there is a beauty treatment in Europe where they put diamonds in somebody’s face and really don’t know what is exactly they do with them but it suppose to rejuvenate!!!
I think about Lucy in the sky with diamonds!

To me, diamonds have changed their meaning today. The diamond to me symbolizes the world’s materialistic nature. Consumerism has taught us that this stone should be sought after regardless of the negatives effects on humanity from mining it. Because the supply is low, the demand becomes elevated and people will pay a lot of wasted money for something ‘praised’ in our society. The wealthy should be helping the poor, not buying diamonds. It is sad to see the wrongdoings of our society, much like outsourcing labor and slave labor.

Diamonds for me are something i could never buy cause i have not the money.Time ago i thought that if in the future i had the possibility to buy a diamond it meaned i was a rich person. Now i have lost my desire to buy a diamond,it seems smth not so precious,i think it would be better to buy smth simple and not expensive but useful.I don’t think that a diamond would be smth useful in someone’s life or change it.

diamonds, if my chemistry teacher is to be believed, are formed when immense pressure is exerted on carbon that it solidifies. That is why the diamond is the hardest and most precious of all gems– it takes a certain number or years for it to achieve the pristine purity we see in it today. i associate diamonds with the analogy of being refined in the Refiner’s fire. carbon in order to achieve its most perfect state has to undergo immense pressures and heat. just as we are, faith people that we are, must undergo moldings and purification to become better people– perfect in the eyes of God.

To me, diamonds are a symbol of immortality; they are Time’s best friends. An industrial strength, nature made material that possesses the power to embody the very definition of beauty. Its influence is mysterious yet unavoidable, casting a dazzling stupor over all. Whether you possess it or not, there is a subconscious desire for its touch, no one can deny a diamond.
Born out of carbon; components of the underground, diamonds create a pristine definition of transformation. Beginning as something coarse and depthless, it can be pressured into a clear, unending trail of dimensions. Taking on spectacular colors, shapes and sizes, the diamond is adored unconditionally. Its significance to the beholder is equally diverse; it is the amulet of beauty, forever, and love, the ultimate token. It may be purely a treasure found under a sycamore tree, a tangible port key to a world of undeniable value and prosperity. Therefore, there is no argument that its purity calls for a price that cannot be rivaled by even the shrewdest of imposters; its purchase is an instant implication of high class. The diamond is sought after across the globe, and although it is becoming easier to find, particularly around all major holidays, it will never lose its appeal.
You cannot shatter a diamond; it cheats death and endures forever. Remaining largely unchanged, its youth and memories are always preserved. A diamond is the Alchemist, a being that holds the truths of the universe, and acting as though under the influence of the Philosopher’s Stone or the Elixir of Life. It possesses its own inhuman properties and grants its knowledge only to those considered by its former owner to deserve. The Alchemist “invoked” Santiago’s inner comprehension, much like a diamond can stir up an internal knowledge. By receiving the gift of a diamond, the recipient is capable of acknowledging and validating an emotion or thought that they might have been skeptical about, or unaware of before. A diamond is the Alchemists existence because it will never fade away; it can only continue to be given, its knowledge spread ever further.
Tradition, evolution, and passion can be found within diamonds. The passion between two people can be shared through this object, whether it is shared or a gift, it is a commitment. The parties involved are agreeing to compare their combined Personal Legends with the everlasting life of the diamond, knowing this means their love is not meant to cease. A diamond is Fatima’s womanhood and her love for Santiago. Fatima will always be a woman of the desert, “but above all, [she] is a woman”, no test of time, location, or companionship will change this, and her beauty and love will remain the same.
Santiago’s journey is a diamond. Like a diamond, whose many edges direct light, Santiago takes control of his fate, pointing his vision in his desired direction. His use of free will combined with fate, represented by the pre-created form of the diamond, lead him to a life so beautiful, his appreciation for it will live forever amongst the diamonds.
I own one pair of diamond earrings; a gift for my sixteenth birthday. Upon receiving them my mom said that she was so excited to “be there when you receive your first diamonds.” It is a treasure I will always keep, one I remain conscious about never losing, and a reminder of my family’s love for me.

I was born in late April, so diamonds are my glittering birthstone. For many years, I thought that the cubic zirconium jewelry I was given from time to time was the real thing, simply because it looked as though it was. Once, I remember, I tried to test my diamond ring to see if it was as strong as everyone said it would be, and it chipped, and I wondered if it was as valuable as I’d always believed.

Diamonds are perhaps the most precious gem, but even they have faults. You mentioned that diamonds “stop wars, strike, and… protect us from any poison or temptations” but it could definitely be said that diamonds hurt as much as they help. Things that glitter and have the beauty that diamonds do seem in our minds like the key to happiness, but wars are started over the wealth of diamonds constantly. As Santiago realizes in The Alchemist, sometimes the greatest treasures are not the ones that can be held in the hand. When he finds his treasure in Spain he is overjoyed, but he is just as thrilled about returning to Fatima as he is about finding a trunk of gold and gems.

Another piece of jewelry I had in my younger years was a “ring of power”. I found it at the bottom of a cereal box, and t was a gaudy, plastic piece of junk. In my mind, this ring made me invisible, protected me when I was alone, and generally served the same purpose as the diamond in your description. Though it was not made of crushed carbon, maybe this ring was a diamond ring simply because I believed it was and because it gave me the strength and security that a diamond is supposed to provide.

Diamonds are tough, and are difficult to come by. Santiago, over the course of his travels, comes across several influential characters who provide him with proverbial diamonds. These solid nuggets of advice save him and protect him when he is in danger. People, too, can be diamonds. If “the devil sees in this stone its enemy, since it resists to all his endeavors” than anything (anyone, rather) who possesses a pure, incorruptible soul is a diamond in human form. Santiago finds great wealth and prosperity in his relationships with people like the King, Fatima, and the alchemist, and perhaps what these people taught him is more valuable than any piece of stone.

The ring I wear now is the one my grandfather wore in high school, and I consider it to resemble a diamond more than any piece of chipped cubic zirconium. It casts away bad spirits, brings me as much perfection and purity as I’ll ever need, and keeps my body free of poison and temptation. It is made of gold, not crushed carbon, but it represents love and I will wear it always and consider it a diamond. In the final lines of the The Alchemist, “the wind began to blow again” and it brought him “a kiss that came from far away, slowly, slowly, until it rested on his lips” (167). That kiss is more valuable to Santiago than his actual treasure. That kiss is the one item of value among a heap of useless things, and the physical treasure is negligible in comparison. That kiss is his diamond.

Diamonds symbolize both the good and the evil in humankind. For many, they represent the love, light, and potential of a human soul. For others, diamonds are a means to achieving power and wealth. These souls then spend the rest of their lives driven by fear to protect what they think they own and control, not realizing it is they who are owned and controlled.

i jus dont understand why we people are stil after just a piece of carbon if at all we want to have it for some industrial gain …this piece of luxury which we if heated for few mins wont leave any trace of existance …the diamond that is so tough yields to the fire …and the diamond so bright as it seems outside is simply equivalent to the coal that you use …so its just an external appearance….
there is a story in which ones
TRUTH and Evil went out to take a bath in a pool
truth was always very beautiful and very wel dressed
while the EVIL was vey ugly and had shabby dress
as they went to the pool truth left its clothes nd went into the pool and evil did the same
but the evil came out first and wore the dress of truth also it destroyed its shabby dress thus
truth had to be naked
thus its said that from that day on devil however evil it was it looked beautiful to the world
while no one could bear facin truth as it was totally naked so people are stil embaressed to accept her

the diamond remind me this story everytime …its bright
its white stil its not cant help a dying soul it cant get love and peace its same as evil with a beautiful dress

I grew up in Namibia, and live in South Africa – from where I stand the only associations I can possibly have with diamonds are blood and corruption. While diamonds have their own intricacy, beauty and value, the money making machine that is the diamond industry has warped their natural attributes and made diamonds synonymous with greed. I wouldn’t buy a diamond if my life depended on it – I don’t want the possibility of the negative energy under which the diamond was obtained, and which I’m sure it carries, anywhere near me. Until the diamond industry cleans up its act, we should all be wary of being seduced by the beauty of diamonds.

well this may be interpreted in the form that whenever we are subjected to extreme conditions, we are expected to turn out brighter and even more precious…… :)

I have divided associations about them.
Yes they are pure, hard, clear……..but precious why ?
For all the sweat miners shed extracting them from Earth ?
For all lives estinguished becuse of them ?

I do not see them as girl’s best friends, opportunists’ best friends !

I have saeen them in Moscow’s museum of Oružana Palata and nothing but nothing I felt seeing enormous quantity of these stones !

But most of all I can never associate it with Sun, Sun which with Earth and Water I associate with Life !

Diamond = perfect stone !

There is a curious event of the diamonds, a company specialize in transforming the dead person into diamond, in order that the families were guarding a recollection.

Associating this idea, the diamond I imagine it as a condition(state) of the death or transformation of our body in a purely mineral condition(state).
With this eternal form, where we can still(yet) canalize energy from the earth to the world, during time.

There is a Company specializing in carbonizing deads to do an eternal diamond to family, nice remind.

With this chronicle, associate the diamond with the state of the death or the last phisic stage where you return to a pure state, to Gaïa’s roots (Earth) to the mineral soil.
For it I do not stop thinking that the diamond in all mystical forms and canalizing, can to serve to report with the spirit of the same Earth and ancestors.

Ps. The vibration of the diamond is that which makes it powerful and attractive for human use in healing..
the energy it possesses – a combination of the atoms vibrating – is different to other mineral stones and their individual frequencies..
Some stones can bring about heaviness, drowsiness even…
the energy of diamond doesn’t bring any of these static vibrations.. but is stone of clarity of vision with empowering energy.
It is this ability, along with the refraction of rainbow colours that are appear to be valued so highly.

I love diamonds because out of all the stones and gems of the world, this one yet has a totally unglamorous role in human industry – as the cutting knife/tool/blade etc on drills for mining.
Diamond is one of the toughest/strongest stones that naturally exists. This is because of its carbon structure…(i think?!)

I also think of the Beatles song, Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds..
Paul Simon song.. Diamonds on the Soles of her shoes…
but not entirely sure of these comparisons.

Diamonds are traditionally a girl’s best friend…
and indeed, for stone so clear and sparkling.
…At the end of the day, i’d rather no ring, than a ring of exploiting mines supplying the diamond trade.

but personally, I now value diamonds for their role in healing..
which of course, their role is unique and unsurpassable.

I dont know how should the Devil hate diamonds, because only a rich person can afford it.I think a diamond might be also a temptation,in that case a tool for the evil to make us do bad things in order to be alse to have the precious stone.I love diamonds, and I also think they might influence the life of the person who weare it.I like the light reflected in it,of course is because of the cut.I had some jewels with little diamods, but had to sale while I went to faculty for paying the first year of study.I dont mind,I think knowledge is much more valuable than any stone. But I admitt I love diamonds, they can add to our look.

I have heard, as Cigarra, that the diamond is the heart tho I prefer to call it the spirit/soul. Every being is a diamond. Facets are cut as we learn through our experiences, as we are able to transcend our limitations and weaknesses, as we learn to love ourselves and those whom we would not love, and as we selflessly serve all of life. The growing brilliance (light) of the soul shines out from within as these facets are honed and polished. Have you ever seen someone who seems lit from within, their eyes shining gloriously? Perhaps that is why saints are painted with halos, the only way an artist can express, in a physical medium, the light of unbounded love. I have also heard that marriage cuts our facets quickly as we learn to live with and for another. So a diamond ring would be a perfect symbol for that union.
Gratitude to the One within us all,
Cherie

Diamonds are love represented in the STRENGTH, BEAUTY, RARITY. However, while some people consider diamonds “perfect”, in the context of LOVE, I’d like so reveal that the imperfect diamond can only be revealed with magnification. So, to really see love, you must look closely at the imperfections of your true lovely diamond to reveal all the prisms and dimension within.

I associate to it the heart.
I will be more precise now about I know…
The diamond can be associate with Sahasrana (chakra of spirituality), with Mercury and Venus (planets), with Gemini (zodiac), with pope (tarot chart).
In ancient Rome the soldiers used to wear, during a fight, a diamond on a ring of iron to give them courage and recklessness.
In the XV century, Louis de Berquin (the adviser of king of France and friend of Erasmo of Rotterdam) was died burned at the stake, he is the father of modern tecnique to cut the diamonds but he studied how to capture their energy.
The alchemists believed that diamonds reproduced itself.
The diamonds can be evil too…
