  • Dear Paul from Austria, can you really listen to people’s thoughts? How do you feel, when you ‘hear’ something you do not like? And how do you respond to an “I love you”, when you know that you cannot do anything about??

  • My goodness dear Heart, how observant of you… and I can assimilate with both you and Paulo… it just depends on my mood… but mostly I enjoy the silence… when others are in the car… I have to listen to their thoughts… or their music ;)

    Love, & thanks, Paul

You say you like to drive to think. In ‘By the River Piedra I sat down and wept’ the two who had been children together, is in a car, and I remember when reading it, I questioned why the atmosphere between them seemed so tense.

‘We had hardly spoken during the two-hour drive that had brought us to this roadside cafe.’ ‘The last two hours of the drive to Bilbao were torture.’ ‘The rental car didn’t have a radio, so all we could do was endure the silence.’ For the female character the silence is unpleasant, because she does not understand it. Then; ‘He tried again but still couldn’t finish his thought.’ And he invited her to go with him. She discovers he was in love with her. And at the end of the trip he said; ‘I love you’ to her.

Now, when I understand how you like to drive and think, it’s easier to understand why the character in the book does it. Myself, I usually drive and listens to loud music, which would probably feel disturbing. Although, it sure takes away tension. And, when there is no radio in the car, in my family, we used to sing (of course my brothers hated that, and told us; ‘Stop singing!).’
