WE thank, Paulo Coelho, for sharing this photo and made us search and find the film! This is the miracle of life, everyday we have the chance to learn, hear, taste, experience something new! Even to look at the same things with … different eyes!
My dearest from Austria and Tina will you accept me in the ….whirling company?? At least, I think, this I can … follow!
LOVE,
THELMA

Thelma, thank you for showing us the video:-)
I haven´t heard of sufi dance before, so this was new for me.
Very interesting dance :-)
But it makes me think of when I was a child and I was dancing outside in the snow swirling around and looking at the stars at the same time.
At last I fell down in the snow happy and laughing *smile*

Dear Paulo,
All I have been reading the last few weeks is Rumi.
Again and again the same pages – like I am swirling around in his words and in silence…
With kindness,

Thanks to both Thelma and Pandora for the videos! And you are so right, Thelma: scarcely a day passes that I don’t stop to consider how amazingly lucky we are in the blessings of the technology that has arisen over the past ten years. To the younger generation, I suppose, it seems a given. They’ve never known anything else. But often, when I read some bit of information on the web or watch a video, I think: “What would I have had to do just a few years ago to access such information?!” Especially where I live, the process entailed would have been phenomenally difficult, if not impossible. Essentially, regardless of where we live - no matter how remote or isolated the place may be - the internet has removed almost every obstacle to the exchange of ideas and information. Thus, it has also removed any excuse we might ever have had for remaining ignorant. (Of course, this only applies if one can afford a computer and internet connection. Millions cannot.) But my! The thought of it just makes me want to fall to the floor on my knees and yell out: “Thank you God for this mighty gift you have given the whole human race!” For what greater boon could there be than the free exchange of ideas?
Paulo Coelho, this is a spectacular photo. The colors! The light! As soon as I saw it, the words of one of my favorite poets came rushing to my mind:
At the still point of the turning world. Neither flesh nor fleshless;
Neither from nor towards; at the still point, there the dance is,
But neither arrest nor movement. And do not call it fixity,
Where past and future are gathered. Neither movement from nor towards,
Neither ascent nor decline. Except for the point, the still point,
There would be no dance, and there is only the dance.
I can only say, there we have been: but I cannot say where.
And I cannot say, how long, for that is to place it in time.
- T.S. Eliot
from “Burnt Norton”
Yes, “the still point of the turning world” - isn’t that the place where we all long to be? Think of it! As a child, on the merry-go-round, the utter thrill of sitting upon the center post, tilting chin up to the sky and watching the clouds whirl round and round!
And for those interested in workshops. If you live in the US or Canada, you might look into Banafsheh Sayyad, who offers a more postmodern version of sacred dance: http://www.namah.net/default.aspx
One day I am going to catch on of her workshops!
Sufi dance is becoming extremely popular in the US, but particularly in California there are a number of centers at which one can study both the dance and the mysticism behind it.
Love,
Savita

Beautiful! I just saw Sufi dancers live at the Hollywood Bowl presented by Yo Yo Ma. Something I have never seen before. This picture captures it beautifully!

Is this the dance the Witch of Portobello dances? I’m very fascinated with the combination of dancing and music…drums, flute…and people being together in a group, and in the nature, as in pow wow dancing too.
Thelma, what an excellent choice of youtube video. Thank you… you make my day!
