Delta will always mean this place out of time and space, where river and sea meet and they do not clash … they unite. I’ve spent few days and nights in Danube Delta, on Sachalin peninsula where it is just a few metres of sand between the sweet and salt water … it was surreal. The places where two worlds meet are the places of revelations.

Delta

Without regret the river arrives at her destination
transforming the surrounding landscape, herself
taking on a new form, becoming
an ocean – an invitation
to travel…?

For me the Delta has always been that vast area where the Mississippi flows into the Gulf. It starts far north, in Minnesota and draws the substance of all that land into its broad water course. As it nears the end of its run, it spreads out over the land and deposits that substance as it disappears into the broad reach of the Gulf. It is in that alluvial fan, of canebrakes and thickets, that mystery arises.

That drawn substance of the country is both the essence and the trash of America come lodged in the Delta before it disappears. The Spirit of America twists and turns over and through that mysterious country.

One of the hallmarks that resonates is the delta blues, haunting, dark, threatening, consoling, the cry of the human spirit, with hellhounds on the trail, with judgement day in mind, with loss and longing uttered before the sky.

Gathered in that is the sound and rhythm of Africa, the spirtuality of the Native American, the conflicted urge to mastery of the white immigrants, the need to tame and subdue what is greater than any one man or woman. It is the sound of longing driven by aspiration of the heart ascending out of that thicket, yearning.

A Delta is a hypdrogeologic formation, a landform, where the mouth of a river flows into an oacean, sea, lake or another river.
The most famous delta is that of the Nile River and it is this delta from which the term is derived, because the Nile Delta has a very characteristic triangular shape, like the upper-case Greek delta, Δ.
Nature the great Mother!
