Changing the perception

by Paulo Coelho on November 10, 2008

Everybody is talking about crisis, the end of the world, the crash of the stock markets, etc… But in my generation, the hippie generation, we didn’t have money as our ultimate goal and I think that now we have adapted ourselves, or were forced to adapt ourselves to a new reality.

Don’t you think that this is a new beginning, a new beginning for us to see the world differently from what society has forced us to see?

I am looking forward for your opinion.

you mr.coelho truly are someone who has taken self awareness to a whole new level.
the whole world is nothing but a perception of human mind, even if they perceive the same or different.

Yes. I thing it is a new beginning. People in the Islamic have started to ask for their rights, to live freely under a democratic systems. National boundaries, have in some places, have somewhat started to blur. People are getting more mature, except American politicians and somehow started showing their feeling for anyone in the world. After the catastrophe in Japan there has been outburst of goodwill messages from people of all countries and mostly unknown to the Japanese.
The people of this world are coming to realize that we all belong to only one community, Humanity, with just different in upbringing in different places, which caused difference in language, body built and culture but inherently we all belong to only one community. Humanity is bigger than our religions, cultural beliefs & even our GODs.
We should thank internet for this & for bringing the world closer. Whether you are in Brazil or India, you can be in touch with anyone unknown to you just trough internet.

I’m 22 years old and I feel extremely sympathetic to my previous generation. For them, it’s like growing from age 0 to 40 in a day!

I believe strongly that my generation is completely stuck satisfying our own fancies while assuring that the previous generation is not left out. I’m sure the coming generation will feel the impact lesser as we are the transforming ones.

There is a need for people to change the way they perceive to fit in. Soon there’ll come a time when our present need to change the way we look at things become the routine.
Then will come the need to change it again cuz of possible future growth.

Yes, we adapt to the changing trends to ‘survive’!

Change is the name of the game.

as said by you in Veronika decides to die: all the people of the world hav drank water from the same well. and so they have the same perception; money as prime importance. but it takes a lot of courage to act “normal” in this mad world. may be we all will end up drinking water from that same well and end up being like them “very normal” with our souls dead.

When I was 5 years old (1964) I sat on the kerb outside my neighbours house and Mr Dixon came home for lunch and parked his car by me. I smelt the car exhaust fumes and said to myself one day we won’t be able to breath as the sky will be full. It came true, I work for a policy research institute supporting developing countries to have a voice on the global stage and adapt to climate change. There is a race towards a green economy – can we protect the vulnerable people and resources around the world? I hope so, we have communication and technology. Or will it be just more of the same?

I do find it difficult, people don’t act, they just think of themselves, lives and their fears.

I hope they prove me wrong.

Yes, absolutely. It can be a time for re-identifying truth and purpose. It can be a time to allow ourselves the opportunity for introspection and to re-set directional goals. If nothing else from the world economic crisis is learned, at least it should have been seen how greed and ego have and are such strong drivers in identifying what society thinks we want and should have. Perhaps it is never a bad time for this type of exercise, but now the global spot light is lit, and everyone should be looking closely.
