Changing the perception

by Paulo Coelho on November 10, 2008

Everybody is talking about crisis, the end of the world, the crash of the stock markets, etc… But in my generation, the hippie generation, we didn’t have money as our ultimate goal and I think that now we have adapted ourselves, or were forced to adapt ourselves to a new reality.

Don’t you think that this is a new beginning, a new beginning for us to see the world differently from what society has forced us to see?

I am looking forward for your opinion.

Yes.. we need to change our perception cuz things are changing and the point of view of people about things is also changing.
Today, as the resources are getting scarce but the demands are increasing, the prices of many of the products are also increasing. So we need to take financial care these days….

In my opinion, we are passing trough a new beginning. People today must to learn how to live with less, and it is the case of the American people, for instance. On other hand, other nations are learning how to live with more, like China . I do not believe in super heroes, today I believe that each one of us, having less or more, must learn how to do our part in order to have a better world.

Many people are looking for miracles or magic, someone or something that will solve their problems for them, and yet magic is just a shift in conciousness.

Hello Paulo and friends,

Here some very interesting pictures that are really worth seeing (there are a lot more than these 2 mentionned and also very interesting to explore). They are taken by the telescope VISTA. It shows the true beauty of the universe and how divers it is. It made me feel very joyeux:-)
I decided to post them under this subject because perhaps this is a new beginning for us to see the world differently from what society has forced us to see if we can see the force of the universe.

The way I look at, this crisis and the end of the world is a crisis of a certain system of thinking, it reaching its limit and encountering its own paradoxical foundation. All these things that are clad in such serious terms as international economy, stock markets, politics…all of that which we have been socilazied into believeing is somehow immutable and grand and serious simply because it has built fortresses for itself – all of this seems now to be exposing itself and its inability to serve the new, arising humanity. In fact it never could – these systems and practices so often cut rught through the veins of life because life was never the primary issue anyway . Politicians are a few otherwise powerless people whose power rests on all our belief in their authority, economy is a system which takes our belief in this relation of numbers for granted. But deep, neither are rooted in anything eternal but a presumption of their own grounds. And one has been taught not to ask because it may appear unknowledgable and stupid – but seriously, does anyone get it? I have studied for 5 years politics and political philosophy…and no matter how hard-matter the guns and the tanks – what I came to cocnclude it is all thought and belief in what is true and what should be, . All of this is from thought, ideas and a certain consciousness – an idea of who we are as humans and what our moralkity is produces countless structures, practices, relations and very very physical and real manifestations for people. But it is consciousness…
This is the most powerful place of human liberation and transformation. Not the hard protests and violent revolution against (imagined) authorities, but insistance to put one’s energy where life flows and serves life . Consciousness about power of our consciousness. All who pretend they are “simply describing” crises, ends of the world and producing horrible scenarios are equally engaged in creational task – creation of a collective imaginary without hope. I think this time is exposing to everyone that there is no “them” with resposnbility, because we increasingly have new tools to act and to influence and to know that the most significant influence is within human mind, and that all solutions can be found in minds connected for the same purpose.
So in a way…this crisis is the best indicator of what it is: an idea of itself. people started acting right away AS THOUGH there was crisis as soon as they heard about it, and thus made the whole wheel slow and then testified to themselves that there indeed was a crisis, and then serious journalists and politicians talk about it as it being “it” and not a dynamics created by us. But it is good to see…it is us, our doing…and all thse things we fight against are increasingly losing their power over life. Life is happening and overflowing all these borders, in people seeking their dreams, in seeking new ways of producing, sharing, communicating and co-creating…I feel in fact our very own practices and doings are what produces constant openings to new futures. We no longer live in a society where only some can have their words heard…We both have the power and responsibility to share ourselves. And for those that have ears – they will hear and it will matter. And so it comes down to this same thing: it is within oneself. We can no longer ideologically imagine futures that are encircled by a view from here and that will capture and discipline life. People beginning to look within themselves and seeking the important will and are already creating new futures and communities that are unlike we know them. To me this shows amazing hope for human beings here, for our being together…but really not getting trapped into fixing something that never was the truth anyway…but acting, connecting, responding and organizning according to these intangible yet powerful forces within ourselves that make us feel we life fully. There are so many good places for us to go…and i do think we are going. This here is going…it is lead by a will for better we all feel connected to… For me this is already interacting in a space beyond closure and fear

Totally. But look at them, they are starting it all over again. This is terrible but I think the great revolution will come from the people and soon enough.Because there is “un ral le bol general”it grows and grows,I can feel it everyday.Tired of working to pay taxes, high rent and food way too expensive, tired to work to have nothing left to enjoy.Work to prepare your retirement cause the government gives you peanuts when you are retired, work to prepare your funeral,so that your children won’t have to worry about. That is so sad.We end our life in a box but we are already in a box. There’s nothing new.

I have tried to fulfill my destiny with regards to this crisis, but I have been prevented by the political establishment, the two party system and its toady, the media. Having described a solution to the mortgage crisis with no bailout or stabilization outlays, and warning of the destabilizing effects of the Congress’ “Stabilization Act”, I have been ignored, except by my friends and online correspondents.

After I publish “Popular Capitalism”, I will be selling it and leading a popular revolt against the two-party system and return the free market, lately robbed of nearly $7 trillion, to its rightful place as the avenue of fulfilling the practical aspects of dreams of each of the people.

Hi Paulo,

I think you are absolutely right, I think the credit crisis is going to shake a lot of people to the core and uproot the foundations of their beliefs. It may be painful for a while like any unwanted, unpredicted change, but in the long run very transformational. People are going to be facing the big questions as a result. What is the purpose of all this? Where do I go from here? The veils of illusion will start to crack and I believe people will look for more meaning and purpose rather than just monetary gain and perhaps find careers that are more fulfilling???? Perhaps some will remember their destiny and follow their bliss, as Joseph Campbell quoted.

Dear Paulo,

I agree with you that times are changing because of the economy and the crash of the stock market. People are changing out of necessity. When there is no money in your savings account you have to cut back on spending and change your spending habits. Does that mean we are less greedy and self serving? I f the market suddenly recovers and bounces back due to some powerful magic, wouldn’t we go back to our own old habits?

I think we have to change from the inside out not the other way around, in order to make a long lasting and fundamental change in ourselves and the society. We need to examine our own values. Some of us have to work on our own sense of greed, love of money, shopping and spending. There are people who think that they are as good as their bank account, the car they drive, their house and all other material things. Would these crises make a drastic and deep change in our psyche and our society? I certainly hope so. I do believe in the power of human beings and our collective consciousness.

Perception: How are WE able to see all sides of the spectrum….

How does BEing accountable for what YOU think and choose to believe inpact YOUR life and others lives….

Is the answer this simple…Are we open to listening & learning how to be responsible for what WE choose to Think & Believe….

Do OUR thoughts create OUR reality as well as contribute to the mass consciousness of OUR world (all people) as a whole body… Is Perception a choice, yet easily manipulated by others of greater influence in OUR life….. Who are WE choosing to listen to… What do WE percieve & how will it effect OUR life and the domino effect on others lives…

Do WE Want to create positive change & encourage a movement towards the freedom of exisiting on this Earth beyond the limitatiions of what WE have been persuaded to accept within OUR Belief Systems…

Are WE able to STOP what WE are doing & BE!

Are WE the people able to STOP, even for one moment, simutaneously… & Will WE then know the power of instant change…
Are WE the ones that are keeping the insanity going!

Like seen and heard on a Saturday Night Live skit:
two words to cure all…

STOP IT!

Do WE Realize how power struggles create wars & instead of wanting to control others…How are we finding the power over OUR SELF within and encouraging as well as uplifting others to do the same…

Do WE as the people, have the power to turn this whole system around right now. NOW! Are WE able to WAKE UP NOW!…

Snap!

Are WE able to Snap out of the hypnosis of deceptions And tune into the visualization of percieving OUR highest VALUE of being.

How can WE start going straight to the origin of what IS!!!!!What IS: Ref: to Deepak Choprah… evey decison I make is between a grievance and a miracle!

Have YOU seen Google Earth and witnessed the world from the satelite perpective…maybe this view will help US revaluate what is important for the existance of woman & man kind, US, The People.

Is A group of people who are in aligmnet with their thoughts, able to create massive changes & prevail!…

NOW ask YOURSELF what is YOUR thought process & which group are YOU contributing to in creating change, is it for the betterment of all people & OUR existance or is it for YOUR own advancement in this MONETARISM SYSTEM & BE responsible for it NOW.

OUR children will hold ALL of US accountable!!!!!

Ponder this…is creating bliss up to YOU and ME if WE are to continue to BE!

How are WE CREATING CHI 2 B FREE:)

On changing perception

I believe true romantics
live in a fantasy world.
They have a photographic memory
that permits them to admire sunrises and "moon'shadows",
They know it is an illusion
but heck , it quenches their thirst.
And that is when the magic happens,
When reality kicks in,
-in the space in between-

may all your dreams come true
have a bright sunny day

If The US Stock Market was a person and he had to write few lines about himself, This is how he would do it:
(Let me know what you guys think)

In my deepest sorrow, money I start to borrow
My Soul cries out loud, and they shut me up with a bail out.

Its not me, but the times are changing
On me the whole world is blaming

They say I am the pillar, I am the ideonomy.
They say I must not fall, I am the center of world economy

But I have to go, for times have changed
My time is over, but opportunities will soon be exchanged.

I bought money to this world and kept the bell ringing,
But soon I found out, Money aint happiness bringing

So I am leaving, for you to find another tomorrow.
Just run to where you want to go and soon your heart will follow.

In the meantime, I try to be a better human being. I care for my family, I try to be fair with people. I recycle my garbage, intent to know myself better, and the means for that are numerous : yoga, spirituality, sport, healthy food… But isn't that hypocrisy? This isn't enough! I'll be a better human being when I'll stop travelling, when I'll live without a telephone nor a computor, stop using my car and conform with reality.

We tend to ignore that reality isn't only what surround us. It's also what's in our hearts. That means that every single one of us as the response within himself for a positive change. The problem is that most of us arn't ready to give up their comfort. Rare are the ones who have the courage to go for the real change. Bless you all, Helene

Hello,

Your generation had dreams of changing the world, of peace and freedom… but aren't those very same people the ones who created today's chaos?

The Human Being is such that he seems to have difficulties to put at first the sake of the collectivity before his own. I will always recall the hope the election of Lesh Walesa represented for the Polish people, how the French were full of hope when Mitterand became president, I could go on with such exemples. Years after, only things became more though for them all. Throughout generations, people have remained the same.

well i'm happy to read here that most of people don't go back to the culture of fear..because they knew already that there are big fights around the world for food, water, wars, humans rights, animals, climat ect..they are just conscious, not optimist, not pessimistic.and the good thing is that we are a lot everywhere ready,in india,china,africa,us,europe..to do more day by day,to make better choices,to protect the earth.this doesn't mean that we must go back to old time, we can use new technologies to help us,not to destroy us.the last rules were based only on money, money is just an instrument, like everything, gold, salt, whatever, this is not the real problem..maybe the next rules will be based to protect the earth and the life.more we are individually to protect the earth around the world, more we are to fight in peace ,more this power will grow.

I do believe we are on the brink of a new beginning with a new leader stepping onto the global stage. But I also fear that people (the media, all facets of society) will expect THE CHANGE to take effect from the work of one man, Barack Obama. The over-exposure and human tendency to look toward leaders and celebrities as the controllers of change is pretty remarkable. It's a difficult and complicated task to tell people that they, as an individual, must "be the change (they) want to see in the world." But Obama has a way with words, and inspiring CHANGE and awareness, as our favorite author Mr. Coelho does, is a feat that can be accomplished…

I'm feeling very optimistic.

so new approach to face with new situation is : believing in our soul and intangible wealth. and also thinking about a new Global Accounting System.

hi there..
same as in your book of " alchemist".
The world is getting more and more complicated, and people are greedy and greedy … It is time to stop and re-think what should do, that Integrity is lost.. in most of the greedy businessmen… To me .. the crisis of financial is like the Cycle. when things get worst to the extreme extend… people are forced to Stop and have a clear mind, detached from the evil advocate.. try to reconsider what is important in life… even you lost all your property or money, with Faith and love … follow the heart.. follow the destiny created… everything happened for a reason beyond the understanding of human being in god's will….

this is time for a reborn of a new Era… after industrialization, enlightenment period.. and I am in search of my Alchemist..

thanks for your books and spiritual enlightenment.. I felt my faith is strengthened and I can feel my heart 's speaking again.. and I hope i can hear the Soul of World soon…

Thanks !!

Wow! I feel that we may be on the same wave length or something!! I had just done post yesterday on this topic..as it relates to our perceptions, Fears and our current circumstances. I had cited the recent contact of U.S.'s President Elect Obama, by Iran's president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had how people's perceptions of this are fear-based. I talk about there needing to be a Paradigm Shift to change how we the Americans choose to respond to this.
If interested, I've posted the URL to that specific post as my Blog URL.

You see…I *do* view this as a new beginning! and we need to beable to shif and work towards a different reality that has been present for so long.
Good Topic Paulo.

I'm still working on our relationship (Yes, also on the one with my wive). But, what is beter for the society? Me then – or me know? My contribution to the society is much more valuable today, than it used to be. And I'm still working on it !

Eevereyone has a different relation to money. Some years ago I used to think: "I will not allow you to controll me. You shall not be as important as you seem to be." I allways wanted to keep a safe distance between money and myself. In fact I had huge problems with it. I was about to walk into the dept trap, because of my notoric lack of interest about money. I nearly became a (financial) problem for the society.

Thanks to the loving support of my wife I learned to establish a healthy relationship with money. I never wanted to call money a friend. Instead, I created an enemy. I used to keep something at bay that finaly rolled over me. Fortunately the wave wasn't to high and someone on shore threw a life belt to me.

The worldwide financial crisis maybe reminds us of taught values. Maybe I will think about what is valuable for me. But in the end money is neither good nor bad.

Before there was money, people used to exchange goods on markets. A certain number of egs for a certain quantity of milk, a certain number of chicken for a whole goat. But what if someone wanted to have a few egs and the only thing he possessed was a living goat? That's when money was invented! A purely transactional commodity. (No worries, this is not THE story about the invention of money but a simple explenation)

Money wasn't bad then. It just served a simple purpose: Beeing a value, people could relate too. So, what's the difference to today ? There is no difference: It's still not bad. Money is still money.

There is a beautiful site called "Contes et sagesse" by Charles Brulhart that you might like to visit.
His website is http://www.metafora.ch
"I have written this story "Les 3 portes de la sagesse" "The 3 gates of wisdom" in December 1995 and sent it to my friends and colleagues as New Year's Wishes in 1996. The word spread quickly on the Internet and it has been used in many sites. Sometimes with my name, sometimes without (anonymous) sometimes also with other people's names.
I have written a different version of this metaphora in January 2004 with a few modification.
You can view the diaporama
also the English version, Greek, and Deutsch translation."
There are also various counts and stories all full of wisdom.

I believe that this is a time of change. The fall of wall street was merely the last straw, and even though many are suffering/will suffer from it, it is a wake up call for us to return to our most basic instincts and ways of living that we were forced to believe to be "impossible in the modern age". Now that people have less money, they are curbing their spending, and becoming less materialistic. I am hoping to this leading to societies changing the way people judge each other based on possessions and looks. Something else that I was always told is impossible is communal living. Now with people struggling to find roofs to put their families under, living in communes with others and sharing groceries and bills can make a cheaper alternative.
So basically what i am trying to say is, we're not a generation so different from those before us; the time judges how people deal with everyday life, and the current situation is going to impose a new lifestyle on everyone pretty soon, and I believe it will be more cooperative and collective than before. When money is gone, people realize they need each other.

Mark Goodfellow November 14, 2008 at 3:05 am

I think most definatley this is the beginning of somthing new unfortunatley I do not think we are entering a new golden age where materialistic things will cease to matter. History indicates that after major recessions we have major wars and this recession is only just beginning. The rise of the East and slow decline of the West will inevetable lead to conflict such is the nature of humanity the politcal and economic axis of the world is shifting. It is easy to speak of not being materialist or wanting wealth the reality is there are 1.3 billion Chinese and 1.1 billion Indians who would also like a Western middle class life style the earth has finite resources and we will inevitable fight over Oil, Drinking Water and food as populations continue to grow. My only deep regret is I dont think we have either the political or spirtual will power to change this.

Dear $am,

quantum physics shows us that reality is determined by observation. At the same time there is still a gap between the general theory of relativity and quantum physics. A common interpretation of this gap implies the existence of endless parallel realities. That's dry science and neither love nor spirits. Given this you of course are right – in your reality – and wrong – in numerous other realities – at the same time. Simple.

Guenther November 13, 2008 at 11:20 am

Dear all,

I'm curious whether this crisis will lead to a faster reorientation of mankind. I know that sooner or later this reorientation will actually happen – in any case these heavy financial losses, like every disaster, provide a chance for changes and for spiritual growth. It is known for a long time and on a basis being as broad as beginning at spiritualism and ending at science that the way mankind lives right now is not sustainable.

During the most recent years I noticed increading parallels between what I observed in global economy and what Karl Marx wrote about the development of capitalism in "Das Kapital" – for those not familiar with it I try to put it in a nutshell: He developed an economic thesis illustrating ever increasing accumulation of capital, at the cost of more and more exploitation of labor. These developments have several implications.

One is a growing consolidation of economic players that leads to instability and dysfunctional markets with respect to classical economics – we observed such a development during the last decades and now we even ended up in a big crisis that nearly "killed" some of the biggest multinational corporations in several industries. The "Adam and Smith" of economics, Adam Smith, once introduced the principle of the "invisible hand" – he believed that economy has to be totally free and that under such circumstances the individual intentions for profit maximation of all economical players automatically lead to the best outcome for the economy – and thus for mankind – in total, whereas an "invisible hand" provides guidance in this process. It would be too extensive to discuss the many reasons why this hand doesn't exist, or doesn't exist any longer. However, one of the main reasons in my opinion is that economical players by far do not have to face the consequences of what they're doing and therefore are not required to accept full responsibility for their actions. Many people consider the idea of an "invisible hand" to be romantic, I do not. Accepting full responsibility and therefore facing all consequences would bring this hand into existence as the mechanism behind this idea in my opinion is very similar to way the universe (or God or All That Is or whatever else term one might use) as a whole in considered to work by many people once they begin to walk on the spiritual way. I have some ideas on how full responsibility could be implemented into the "rules of the game", but this would lead too far right now.

Back to Karl Marx: Another implication are increasing social tensions, driven by the economical developments as described above. Marx considered this to be a natural development of capitalism, in the end leading to major changes in societies and to a way of living together which he called socialism. Try to forget about the "socialism" or "communism" we observed this far: Lenin denied the necessity of a natural development and believed that the "end product" could be brought into existence artificially – we learned that he was wrong. However, we see increasing social tensions. As tensions itself never will directly lead to a "good" result, they very well might lead to people rethinking their approach to life. It is necessary that each one of us lives unconditional love and accepts full responsibility for his own life in order to reach a state I then would call real socialism.

The current crisis for sure will force more or less people to reconsider their concept of life. Thus it contributes to reaching the "critical mass" of warriors of the light that Paulo Coelho wrote about in "Am Ufer des Rio Piedro saß ich und weinte" (I don't know the english title, it might be "At the banks of Rio Piedro I sat and cried"??) and that – once it is reached – will lead to significant changes on the whole planet.

Love

Günther

I totally agree with you Paulo, we have learned to walk through the forest and not appreciate the beauty which is surrounding us. It is time now to let go of all that we thought was important and commit to a new transformation of our Self.

To Mr. $am, if your purpose is for the children, then you are a good person. Without knowing it, you are giving out your love to them. its a spiritual love that transcends what you are trying to say or act. I might be a loser in denial for you, its ok to be tagged as one. but please tell me who is the real in denial? reading it again, this question bothers my mind: why would you accumulate and pass on to your children if you can accumulate it for yourself alone?…

Mr. Coelho's book made me escape from the anguish that this world has, creating a wiser and stronger individual who can face, with grace and compassion, people who don't believe and criticize. If he gain from his book, I gain more with his book. Simple. Let a person have what he deserve. GBU =D

Maybe when people find it in there heart that they are weak, then this will be the time when they are at there strongest. If change has to happen, it has to start from the people and supported by the government. We have to see the problem, move, learn from past mistakes, be down once in a while arise and continue to move.

ANd to those who have the guts to influence as u are Mr. Coelho, as everyone who speak up in this blog may practice what we preach especially if it brings goodness to other people. I pray that we have enough braveness to stand for what we believe in, shakable but unbreakable, swim with the current of todays generation yet in control and definite and with direction. A small yet blazing candle in the middle of darkness, who knows how many we can inspire to light their own candles.

Nowadays, people are lost but good thing, people are realizing that they are lost. A good sign of progress and hope. The flower garden is blooming, i pray that it wont wither soon, hope that we can endure the storm and bloom beautifully than ever before.

Crisis is our spiritual teacher, so learn students! =D

excuse Mr. Coelho
To Mr. Paul of Austria
Thanks alot, but tears works for me, it gave me direction, it is as if my way of speaking to God, my spiritual communication and peace within. What I am trying to tell is more on people dying a spiritual death. People tend to live as earthly animal, with primitive needs and desires, and so vengence will be upon us in unpredictable ways… we are created uniquely wise yet we regress for the sake of pleasures the world can offer. Then, it is the time when the soul dies… I have more hope that everyone can see the "vision of a generation coming back to God", it might be long and painful, but it's worth it.. =D thanks for the concern, God bless u

Greetings from Guatemala Mr. Coelho

I think that what human beings look for is for having a reward to our actions in life, something that make us feel reach in spirit. Some people use money as a mean to find this reachness and that is why economical crisis is such an important topic; but I don’t think it is the goal. The goal has always been to feed our spirit. In my particular case (and I come from a later age than hippies)I am very clear that money is not even the right mean and therefore I have been happy in the different stages of my life, with or without it.

Good topic, makes you think.

People are talking about the troubles the stock market is causing but I’ve been feeling more of this new beginning that you bring up. I think there are people taking positive steps in the four corners of this world. Individuals and groups of people know that by caring for someone, or the community, or Earth, or a country, or your parents that your actions change, your ideas change, your thoughts change.

CADA VEZ QUE ESCUCHO “nuevo comienzo” ME TIEMBLAN LAS PIERNAS,ES COMO QUE TODO HA ACABADO Y RENACE TODO,PERO RENACER A QUE O DE QUE Y PORQUE?,PORQUE NO ARREGLAR LO DESCOMPUESTO Y SEGUIR ADELANTE,MUCHOS SERES HUMANOS DEPENDEN DE UN CONTINUO TRABAJO,FAMILIA,AMIGOS,VECINOS…SI ACASO EL MUNDO TIENE QUE PARAR PARA ARRANCAR NUEVAMENTE MUCHOS NO PODRAN SEGUIR,TRATEMOS ENTRE TODOS DE SEGUIR ADELANTE, QUE ES UNA UTOPIA? EXACTO!! PORQUE NO CREER EN UN NUEVO COMIENZO DE IDEAS??
ACA MI FAMILIA ME APUNTA: “TE HAS OLVIDADO DE LA BANCA MUNDIAL?”, Y YO QUE HABIA COMENZADO A SOÑAR!!

“Money money money, must be funny, in the rich mans world” This came up long after the hippies. The hippies were sweet, a little bit smelly, but all right… The unfortunate thing is that warm water means having a house, having a house means paying mortgage or rent, so for how long can you forget about money…? Because I don’t like them. Or should I say I don’t like to have my thoughts constantly full of them. As I don’t like to think about food, yet I am obsessed with it. It doesn’t make me really, for a long time, happy, but something in my head says that these things can help me survive untill… a better day… that never comes…

We live in a materialistic world. Even the priests they preach, they preach and when you start seing some angels they start asking you for the tenth of your brutt income… Then you need to believe what Jesus said: “the man can live without food but not without the words that come from God”… But who does? You need to fast and experience it but they won’t let you to, they will skare you with the death… and then you need to believe that there is no actual death but transformation in nature and that a pure soul cannot go to hell and that nothing else really matter. But this is a forbidden knowledge these days and man needs a lot of guts to get it…
