Funny - I was just reading this tale to my daughter a few days ago, from a children’s book of mythology. My favorite element is the dragon that is the final obstacle this hero must face and conquer.
To stretch the subject a bit, I have a couple of tattoos. I think I’ve mentioned one of them here before. The other is a red dragon (not a Western dragon, but an Asian dragon) tattooed over the center of my chest, a sort of shield to my heart. Both of these tattoos are not mere “mistakes of youth” left over from wilder days. I got them both when I was quite mature, and quite sober, in every sense of the word. For me, it was a very personal decision, a sort of private ritual marking certain points in my spiritual journey. People who do not have tattoos have asked me why I would ever do this. First of all, it is not for show. Both are in places that are generally for my eyes only, not easily revealed by everyday clothing. These tattoos for me are very strong, like personal talismans; I would even go so far as to say that they are imbued with a certain energy that does in fact have a power in my life and over my person.
At any rate, I like that idea of the World Tree (the Axis Mundi, “heart of the world”) - the heart in my case, my own heart - guarded by the dragon. The hero, like the Shamans in the ancient pre-Christian times, has to climb this World Tree in order to bring back the great wisdom and magic of the gods (in this case the golden fleece) and thereby reclaim his right to rule the kingdom.
Mythology is such a powerful force when we allow it to enter and take root in our lives.

Greek mythology is full of Gods, Heroes, wars, jealousy,love..
I have learned the history and mythology at school, and in my fantasy all those Gods and Heroes were my true.. friends and relatives! None of them was … an ordinary man!
