With its roots firmly planted on the earth and its branches soaring towards the skies, the tree embodies both man – as a being between two worlds – as well as Creation linking the below to the above.
Many ancient cultures held trees as sacred. Even more deeply, they would consider them as the axis of the world, around which the Cosmos would intertwine. The Mayas for instance believed that a sacred tree – Ceiba – held the world together.
There is a specific symbol of the inverted tree – present in Alchemical writings as well as in one of the oldest books of Manking – The Rig Veda. This tree that has its roots descending from the airs and its branches plunging towards the earth symbolises the divine nature of Man. This image invites Man to understand that he has to torn the veil of illusion of matter in other to attain his inner heaven.
Now you take the floor – what do you associate with the Tree?

For me, the tree symbolizes the evolution of spirituality. From the root which is God and one unified belief (the main branch). Then, it branched out to different religions, these religions branched to various sects – the twigs, and so on and so forth.
The evolution of spirituality, however, is like a Banyan tree where there are roots coming out of the branches and fall down to the ground symbolizing the gradual return of all religions and sects to one God… and the cycle continues…
Beautiful and thoughtful ;o)
I associate the tree with the connection between the heavens, the earth and the underworld. It is associated with the number three and also is associated with the Kabbalistic “Tree of Life” which outlines the many names of God and its connection with Adam.
In addition the Norse had a world tree which held all the many dimensions of reality together. It is fitting that during the Christmas season that the North Star is placed on a tree which symbolizes Jesus’ birth/dominion over the ‘world tree’ or all the upper and lower realms. (It is an evergreen to denote the resurrection and rebirth, which is both a Pagan and Christian symbol)
Books could be written on the subject of the tree, but these are but a few examples. Great Question.

When I am among trees I feel a sense of peace. It is like their spirit surrounds me and uplifts my own spirit. There is hardly anything better than walking leisurly in a natural woods.
The tree is for me a symbol of hope. It survises storms even pollution it can transform. It gives makes it posible for us to breath. A tree is life. It gives me grounding and its whspering trees teel great stories. My work is with children and I do projects with them in teh parks and woods of Amsterdam. We climb trees make huts and play with nature. Children love trees and hug them, feel their power and play withhtem. Trees and people a great combination. Trees are green friends , so lets be real friends to them too.
When I think of a tree I think of Jesus with his arms spread out. The quote of how we are all of one body. I think that the population of the world builds up that tree with its roots in the ground and its head in the skies and how if we were to break the branches of one part of the tree, the whole tree would be affected.

In a local wood there are favourite trees.I visit these trees they seem like cathedrals of song , islands in the sky.I can almost hear the tides as leaves whisper into the wind. There was this piece of wood near a stream, I never wanted something so much as this piece of wood.I saw so many shapes in this piece, so many stories.A woman sitting in meditation. It was too heavy so we took a photo.I am glad we did because it was gone after a bit.I read Wildwood and I think it might have inspired me.I took a eye shaped piece of wood from a beach after that I call it my eye of Neptune. I like to think of all the waters in which it has been washed.
“Once there was a tree . . . and she loved a little boy.” So begins a story of unforgettable perception, beautifully written and illustrated by the gifted and versatile Shel Silverstein.
Every day the boy would come to the tree to eat her apples, swing from her branches, or slide down her trunk . . . and the tree was happy. But as the boy grew older he began to want more from the tree, and the tree gave and gave.
This is a tender story, touched with sadness, aglow with consolation. Shel Silverstein has created a moving parable for readers of all ages that offers an affecting interpretation of the gift of giving and a serene acceptance of another’s capacity to love in return.
Small axe by Bob Marley :
Why boasteth thyself
Oh, evil men
Playing smart
And not being clever?
I said, youre working iniquity
To achieve vanity (if a-so a-so)
But the goodness of jah, jah
I-dureth for-i-ver
So if you are the big tree
We are the small axe
Ready to cut you down (well sharp)
To cut you down
These are the words
Of my master, keep on tellin me
No weak heart
Shall prosper
And whosoever diggeth a pit
Shall fall in it, fall in it
And whosoever diggeth a pit
Shall fall in it (… fall in it)
If you are the big tree, let me tell you that
We are the small axe, sharp and ready
Ready to cut you down (well sharp)
To cut you down
(to cut you down)
(to cut you down)
These are the words
Of my master, tellin me that
No weak heart
Shall prosper
And whosoever diggeth a pit
Shall fall in it, uh, bury in it
And whosoever diggeth a pit
Shall bury in it, uh (… bury in it)
If you are the big, big tree
We are the small axe
Ready to cut you down (well sharp)
To cut you down
If you are the big, big tree, let me tell you that
We are the small axe
Ready to cut you down (well sharp)
To cut you down

a tree is Mother’s love to us. Always giving, never asking anything is return. I feel sad when I see a mango tree caged up, have you ever seen such a pitiful sight?
Tree is (my inner) Life, ancient, omnipresent, it breathes, it bleeds, it weeps. Cut a Tree and I weep. Trees take care of the Earth, without them, Earth dies.
Hi i’m from India and according our culture we had always given sacred place to trees and nature. when talking about trees it is to be noted that they have always served us by giving fruits, providing shade…even if man finally chopped them down. we throw stones at trees when trees are full of ripe fruits and they bear the stone throw and give us fruits and provide us with shade. they make the atmosphere pure and cooler and is of great support to the variety of birds living around. we should look at the trees at learn fron them how they help others even if we treat them bad.
I associate tree with FAMILY, one root one relative…
Tenho 53 anos e sou autodidata. Um grande abraço.

The tree is pure growth
a symbol also of mystery
with it’s branches reaching out and up
A tree always reminds me to “reach out”, and reach up….
Nature is never wrong…..
ALL LOVE=cat
for me tree is timeless, strong, misterious and respectable.
Helpless against human and yet face us with our mortality.
Here is the translation of what I wrote above (by hoping that it is just):
I pass on to you an e-mail sent through myspace on November 25th of this year when I met Paulo Coelho’s site which brought me on this blog mail sent to coelho paulo to say to him that I was delighted to find him:
” When I look at the area(extent) and at the beauty of a landscape of mountain, sometimes I see the tree which is present, and one day it will appear to me and one day I shall understand that I looked for it eyes while I had to find it with my heart simply the research is not vain, but necessary and finally the light for me and in my heart will be made because any search a day will see rewarding and will give a new sense to the life of light, to every road of meeting, to every route of life which enlightens the area(extent) of a landscape of mountain … ”
I had sought and received, and receives thank you
i associate it with inner peace…tenderness, firmness. and if it’s a palm tree then it represents patience, pride, and wisdom
As I look out of the window, there is a fog gently rolling in, shrouding the trees to the point of invisibility. As the mist rolls on glimmers of a tree trunk, the odd branch, some leaves and then within seconds, there are the trees again, strong, deeply rooted, branches swaying with the breeze. The old bark, dark, grey and brown strips shedding, mulching the ground beneath. New smooth, almost pink wood taking its place. Their roots strongly anchored in the rich surrounding soil. Trunks and branches exposing age and resilliance. Leaves – green with life.
Tomorrow these trees that touch my soul will be different again depending on the light of the sun, and the time of the day. They will reveal colours of pink, grey, brown, red, green and gold. They will be still or sway with the wind. The smell of eucalyptus will pervade the air, and I will sit, humbled by their beauty, and their strength. I will be reminded to be grounded, to reach deep, but to be flexible, to blow in breeze, to give of myself and my home and that I am part of the cycle of life they clearly represent.
If you lean against a tree, after a while you can feel it breathing. It is such a moving experience.
Finally, I have seen your pictures and read about you.I just heard about you from my sister who was so excited to see you for a book signing in Dubai last year.
Anyway, a TREE for me represents physical and the divine life. It starts out in the dark, as if non existent, but it is there. Seed germination is likened to our 9 months in our mother’s womb. Breaking soil, physical birth, springing of buds, branches and roots as our growing up years where we have to weather a lot of storms and seasons. The divine is when it meets it fate, being sawed for lumber or other mundane purposes…as we die we are reborn, and only our faith will know where it will lead us. Thus another cycle of life begins yet again.
According to Christianity trees are related to the inferior, terrestrial and celestial worlds. How ever I find that trees are a privilege, a necessity. They represent history (at least those who survived it). They are field with energy, wisdom. They are the roots.
I hope you can see the visual I added to this message…otherwise where can i send it?
Tree is breath, air, endless arms.
Sound of a strong freedom.
i wud like to associate tree wid a story book…which has many anecdotes to tell…which keeps a track of history…for generations to come it provides a detail of their ancestors…wid a strong foundation..however it does keep a level of privacy by shielding its stem wid new bark evry season
I associate the tree with stability, permanence, growth, and healing. According to Doreen Virtue who writes about fairies and angels, there are such things as tree people (like fairies and gnomes) who can provide wisdom and answers. Maybe that’s why people like hugging trees. I love the idea of a tree house, a tree fort, a branch to sit in and read, the changing with the seasons, the shade, the sheer beauty and massive size of trees. The Powder Puff tree is my favorite.
I associate with the tree, life. And beautiful, ever changing, yet always the same, life. Something immovable that keeps on growing. It represents to me, from its form as a seed, the fight against challenges… to achieve its whole potential. May be it has to do with my environmentalist views, but a tree will always represent life to me and when I see the deforestation, the forests being burned, it makes me cry… because I feel a part of me dies with it, a part of my life, the life of this earth that flows through me, it’s gone.
Just sharing my humble insights, sorry if I make no sense. :D
the tree brings me back over the years and to this chilhood song..

With the tree I understand life, connectivity with everything, its leaves give us O2, his body protects us from winds, floods, it’s roots tell us of a pozition in the planet, its beauty..everything that’s beautiful in life..it’s changes..like life changes, its age – time.
“The Giving Tree” by Shel Silverstein, on of mine and my daughter’s favorite books. Here is a reading of it I discovered on YouTube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=up7-xHm6jlA
There is a hollow tree that I have gone to since I was a little girl. She is a glorious old Bay Laurel tree – a Mother Goddess – that sits beside a small babbling creek, and I still go and check on Her in my hometown. She calmed me, whispered words of wisdom and soothed me when no adult in my lonely childhood was able. Now She smiles upon me and is silent, leaving me to conjure up my own wisdom.
I live hours away as a grown child ;>, in Northern CA amongst the majestic Redwoods – an intense Guardian energy that is intense. Now They speak to me, share with me words of wisdom, send message through the rich earth back to my Tree Mother.
Trees to me are a race all their own, and they feel very wise and full of grace to me. It has never surprised me that so many cultures have a “Tree of Life” that connects the world. I adore Them.
Blessings,
Kimberely

In the early spring time, after a heavy storm of ice, walking in the forest, I hear the trees awake with crying.

The tree of Good and Evil, in Paradise.
The Tree of Life.
The Sacred trees in Ancient Greece.
The Olive trees mountain in Jerusalem.
The tree of Judas, the fig tree.
The tree, under which, Buddha had his revelation.
Now we have to … decipher our dear-est Paul’s from Austria comment above! He seems to be happy with… roots and … flying spirit!! God bless him.

strength, spirit, beauty, survival of our planet
I love trees.
First and foremost, the great god, Odin, who hung upside down, for nine days and nights, from the world-tree (World-Ash), Yggdrasil, in order to attain the wisdom of the Nine Realms of existence. At the end of this period of torturous self-sacrifice (as he, not unlike Christ, chose willfully to assume this role), he fell from the tree and, in a sudden flash of insight, was granted the wisdom of the Runes, which was later passed on to humankind.
Yggdrasil, as the center of the world in Norse mythology, is a huge ash tree, in which dwells, among other things, the great serpent Jormungandr, who guards it. (Sound familiar?) Meanwhile, at its base lies coiled the mighty dragon Nidhogg, also a fierce guardian of this ladder between the Nine Worlds.
An image of Yggdrasil:
http://altreligion.about.com/library/glossary/yggdrasil.jpg
From beneath the roots of Yggdrasil issue three springs: Mimir (the well or fountain which can grant, to one who is worthy, the ability to see the future), and Hvergelmir (the wellspring of the cold that encompasses Neflheim or Hel, the eternal abode of those who do not die a hero’s death) and Uroarbrunnr (the well of fate).
The interesting thing about Uroarbrunnr, also called the Well of Wyrd (“fate”), is the Norse concept of “fate” or “destiny,” which is much akin to the concept of karma, though somewhat different. This term, is known to most of us from Old English “wyrd,” as in the “wyrd sisters” (“weird sisters” – the three witches) of Shakespear’s Macbeth. By the term “fate,” however, in the Norse concept, there is no sense of predestination, as we think of “fate.” There is, instead, the idea that all intentions, actions and events in the present coalesce to form the future – so there is “free will.” One is not simply destined to a certain predetermined “fate,” although one’s fate is bound up with the intentions and actions of others. What is unique, however, is the idea that the future likewise reflects back upon and influences the reality of the present (or past).
On the whole, the The Well of Wyrd makes me think of your concept Paulo, of “personal legend.” There is a certain element of Divine Will or imposition of a specific “destiny” or “life-purpose” by a higher power, and yet the individual retains his/her free will. Likewise, there is this concept at play which is often expressed in the phrase “no man is an island” – our future and our personal destiny is not a thing apart from the society, the culture and the people with whom we share our lives. All is inextricably intertwined – the past, the present, the future, our will and the will of the Gods, our intentions and actions and the intentions and actions of our fellows – as intertwined as the twigs and branches of Yggdrasil, the great World-Tree which stands at the center of the Nine Worlds.
My daughter has a puzzle. (Sometimes we enjoy working puzzles together.) It is not a child’s puzzle really, but is challenging even for an adult. It depicts a tree which, to my mind, is Yggdrasil (the mighty World-Ash, The Tree of Life). It is a most amazing picture. The tree, so large, so expansive, is home to a universe – an unending parade of birds and reptiles and mammals. Its branches, the color of fire or the sun itself, a never-ending maze of color and form, aspire toward the sky while, at the same time, forming an inviting umbrella of shade and safety for all that rest below. beneath it, outlined by the horizon itself are two human figures dancing on the hilltop, oblivious to all but the music of the spheres.
Trees are magic. Some trees surely are. In my back yard is a very special tree, an “axis mundi” of sorts, certainly the center of my small world. The first time I laid eyes upon it, it was just a sapling, not much higher than my head. I came to look at this house, and the person who showed it to me told me, “There is something very special in the back yard that you have to see.” It was this young oak, or should I say, two young oaks, sprouted either side-by-side or perhaps from the same root system – it was impossible to tell. The two trunks had begun to intertwine, wrapping themselves around one another like a twist-tie from a bread wrapper. As this tree, or trees, grew, they became one. The trunks continued to intertwine and eventually wrapped so tightly around one another that the bark grew together and formed one skin. The only evidence that this is actually two trees is a sort of corkscrew crevice, the seam between the two barks, that runs from the base of the tree all the way up its trunk to a point, near the very peak, where the trunks again split into two. Now, this great oak, which sits at the center of my back yard – the only tree around which is not a pine – is, in my mind, more than just a tree. It is not merely an object under which I seek shade or shelter; it is both a living spirit, which presides over and protects my life here, and a sign, a sort of promise from above. I never sit beneath it but that I am aware of its presence in the most profound manner. That tree, for me, is not only the center point of my turning world, it is the ladder between the realms.
Sincerely,
Savita
The tree for me, is what the desert is for you, Paulo. Thank You so much for posting this.
Tree-friend, different sizes, shape and type, bark, leaves, branches, one of nature’s workers, my Oak tree at the front.
For me a tree symbolices strength yet vulnerability…
where no matter how big they grow and how strong they seemed there will be a bigger power ready to bring it down. Making it like us,showing the beuty of our own mortality and once we understand that we beging to be more humble and thankfull for what we have
Trees are divine, manifestation of the Love that we are all made from. Trees are innocent like prophets and like children. Trees have souls, their souls are connected to the Soul of Universe. Trees have their own agonies, pleasures and secrets. As many as the types of humanbeings are, that many are the trees, each one is different from the other. There are the tall and long ones that stand in line like a band of determined soldiers, there are very wide and old ones that have a shadow for everyone who sits under them, and the short crooked ones that stand in solitude in the far far away fields. Trees are sacred because birds live in them, and they are sanctified becuase lovers inscribe their names on them.
Sorry, the first sentence of my response should read as follows:
When I read your post, I think of how I have always loved trees.
When I read yourI think of how I have always loved trees. When I was a young girl, we had four willow trees around our house. Every day I would be up in one or another of those trees, sitting, watching the world below, the sky above.
I think of my mimosa tree, felled three years ago by a winter snow, and how we had to cut it up and remove it from the yard. Two years ago, during the late spring, a tree began to grow in the exact same spot. This year, during the late summer months, this little tree grew pink feathery flowers and grew even taller. I look out the window now and see a mimosa sapling, four feet tall, that grew from the roots that were left in the ground.
I remember thinking about how a tree branches out, not only above the ground but below the ground as well. It reaches for light at the same time it explores the dark.
cant wait to answer this one.. but my internet session is just ending ;o((
Tree?
Tree symbolise for me a historie.
Routs like our ancestors, on whoes foundation we are growing.
Trunk like our grandparents.
Branches like our parents .
Leaves like us,
Fruits like our kids.
Sometimes our lifes is difficult we don’t know why. We suffer. We try but is dificult to change our life.
The christians many time say it is our destiny.
But it is right?
All the trees has destiny to be fruitfull.
Just sometimes the soil it isn’t good.
If you are gardener, will you give up and say this is the destiny.
You will change the soil.
Same in our life.
Even our roots was not good , we must try to bear good fruits.
We try to recognise a wrong soil (historie) and change it to good root.
Then our tree will give a good fruit .
We will give a good root of new historie .
Well, first as you mentioned already,I see as axis mundi, that is a link between human -divine.But,in my mind a tree symbolise nature. How I notice the passing of seasons,if not seeing the trees on bloom, with green leaf,or without ,when winter comes. And as many tree,as many assotiations, for exampla fir is symbol of steadiness. In my country,it is a custom to cut a tree ,a fir,for a weding ,adorned,or at a funeral of a young person.the fir is put at the young tomb. But we have so many poems that link the faith of the forest to that of men.And of course reminds me the mith of Charon, for a trunk of tree is made a boat for the ultimate voyage…bye
well a few things come to mind when I think about trees.
How we breath , how we eat from them ,how the earth feeds us ..also I think of things like Tarzan in the jungle swinging from trees,I think of paper ,and also love -how when people carve there name into a tree with a heart around it ..furniture ,and also how rich in amber, myrrrh, frankicense there sap ,rich in resins ,also some trees are as old as creation.Plus it reminds me of a question that the Queen of Sheba had asked Solomon ..she carried in a tree trunk with neither roots or branches ,and she asked him -which end of the trunk sprang the roots and which end held the branches
..??
Solomon ordered them to throw it into the water and soon discovered the trunk sea sawed for ages but it soon showed that the roots sank and the branches where buoyant .
Sheba replied with “It comes from the earth ,like the dust which feeds and enriches it.But ift flows like water and lights up the home .
Blessings Tania
I associate the tree with healing. When in the forest i place my hands on the trees. The energy of the tree flows through me uplifting my spirit and i feel at peace. My mind feels joined with the tree.
J’avais sollicité et reçu , et reçoit ..merci
I associate Man with the tree.
When the leaves fall and you think it has died, new sprouts start to appear and it begins its cycle again. The Tree of Life.
I also associate the tree with Nature Spirits and Protective Guardians.
