Dear Fatima,

It seems that you are not the only one. Someone else, just last week, expressed a similar idea on this blog. It is also a delimma that I have struggled long and hard with myself. In fact, I’m not sure that there is an ultimate answer. I don’t know if there ever comes a time, at least for most of us, when the path is wholly illuminated from beginning to end. Rather, we have to feel our way, groping, asking continually for God’s guidance and direct involvement in our lives. At best, if we are very very quiet, we hear this small still voice speaking from within…. Occasionally there are trumpets blaring and angels singing, but it does not happen often – these are the rare handful of moments in an entire lifetime. Mostly there is uncertainty and questioning – is this the right path I am on now?

Maybe God does not require of us the sort of certainty we might assume should dawn upon us at some point. Perhaps all that God wants of us is to be sure that we are still listening – still seeking his/her presence and guidance in our lives.

If you do happen to find the answer, however, please do let me know.

Sincerely,
Savita

Yesterday I watched again the film “The Mission” (1986), starring Robert De Niro and Jeremy Irons. The story is set in the 1700′s at the time of the historical partitioning between Portugal and Spain of the La Plata region of South America, on the present-day borders of Brasil, Argentina and Paraguay. What had been Spanish territory, and a region where the Jesuits had built a number of missions which served to protect the native peoples from the slave traders, was abruptly given over to Portugal. The Jesuits then, as well as the natives who had made these missions their home and the center of their community life, were ordered to leave – the Jesuits were ordered to abandon their quest in the region, and the natives to return to the jungles.

In this particular story, Jeremy Irons is the Jesuit superior over a certain mission, deep in the jungle, which is destined to be overrun by the Portuguese military if they do not surrender it and depart. He, as a Jusuit priest, has decided to remain, to stay with the natives in this mission village, and face whatever fate has in store. Robert De Niro, a former slave-trader converted to Jesuit, decides to stay also, but not to give up the struggle without a fight. He renounces his vows as a Jesuit in order to take up arm and defend the mission and its native inhabitants from the encroaching Portuguese military.

In essence, both men have stayed to defend what God hath ordained – this mission built in the jungle with the intent of bringing God’s message of love, as well as protection, the the native inhabitants of the area. But, one man, Jeremy Irons, has decided to remain in peace, ministering to the people “as a priest,” and suffer what comes; the other, Robert De Niro, has decided likewise to stay at all cost, not to abandon the mission and its aims, but, to the contrary, he has decided to wage war against the enemy, those who come to destroy the mission, and to fight to the death if necessary.

There is a moment when, toward the end, both men confront one another, as well as the irony of their situation and chosen positions. The enemy is near, and Robert De Niro comes to ask Jeremy Irons priestly blessing for the upcoming battle. The priest refuses, however, saying that if the course the warrior has chosen – to fight – is indeed God’s will, then he will have God’s blessing and all will go well with him. If to fight is not God’s will, then a blessing from the priest will make no difference in the outcome.

So, in the final moments of the movie, in the final battle, the tension revolves around the question of which man has chosen the path that is in fact in line with God’s will.

I won’t completely spoil the film, for those who have not seen it (it is well worth seeing), but I will only say that this quote encapsulates perfectly the nature of the struggle each of these two men face in the depths of their hearts. The have struggled – against suspicion of the natives themselves at first to gain acceptance, then against the hardships of the jungle, and, in De Niro’s case, one might say, against the Devil in his own heart – thus they have “offered up their struggles” to God, to do his will, to build this mission. And in the end, when the Church officials say that it is now God’s will that they abandon this effort, that they desert the mission, they must decide whether or not “to obey the One to whom they have offered up their struggle.”

If you haven’t seen this movie, rent it. It is wonderful, so richly compelling, so intensely spiritual! Trailer: http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi502333721/

Savita

But how does one discern the “divine plan”? I find that it is a bit confusing trying to differentiate between fears, impulse, anger and intuition…since it is said that intuition is a reflection of our deeper self, then how do I know when the “divine” is speaking?

It seems I have much more to learn….

YOU SAY: “The warrior of light must obey the orders of the One…” Alessandro Mendini or God, Paulo?!?!?

IF GOD SAYS: “DO NOT KILL!!!”

..’and accept His Will, because he knows that thus he follows the Divine Plan’. Sometimes the real purpose is not obvious and we feel helpless and lonely, but this is just a ‘dark’ moment of trying our faith. Soon the sun appears again and we proceed to our Path with hope and joy, with our companions, the fellow Warriors of the Light and …Paulo Coelho.
