Sarah Michelle Geller is an amazing actress. to those that judge her for Buffy: this is typcasting, but she was amazing in Buffy. She is such a compelling actress, definitely Veronika is the perfect role for her to display her range of emotion. She is a professional actress for many years, not some up and coming, or some unknown wannabe. I can’t wait to see her in this. that she hasn’t had luck is not liely, she had years of success

I believe if this movie is a success at all, it’s because Paul Coelho has a following of avid readers and not because Sarah Michelle Gellar is in it. She hasn’t had much luck in the past few years with her average one note acting (monotone voice with confused, deer in the headlights expression) but as middle age sets in she may not have many choices. She is extremely lucky to be in this film and we’ll have to see how it turns out.

Mr. Coelho,
I’m the American-Croatian screenwriter who sent you and your agent my treatment for the adaptation, as well as the first 30 pages of the script over 5 years ago. You enjoyed it so much that your agent flew in from Spain and met with me in LA. I was saddened and disappointed when Muse Films picked it up, since I didn’t have the money to buy the rights myself. Although I have a literary manager now, I wished to post my disappointment on your blog. Since your agent stressed to me that no one before me had such a cinematic interpretation for your book, and because I was so passionate about the story, you and she decided she should meet w/ me in Los Angeles. When we met that one afternoon in Santa Monica, she told me you were both so moved by my interpretation and vision and what I had written so far, that she gave me a verbal promise that I would be the best choice for screenwriter if a production company ever did eventually express interest. Later, when I contacted Muse Films several times on my own, as well as tried to get back in touch with your agent, my messages and emails went ignored and unanswered, but my interpretation of your book and those pages were both in the hands of Muse Films as well as your own. I was surprised I wasn’t contacted to collaborate on the project, after I was the one who initially brought the project to your attention.
Regards,
Ivana I

Cannot wait to see the movie… One of my fav books and finally it’s here. I just hope they didn’t ruin it. Sarah Michelle wouldn’t have been my first choice but it beats having Kate Bosworth like it was originally planned.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is my favorite actress of all time, and to see her star in an adaption of my favorite book is justing thrilling.

I’ve watched this trailer and the teaser trailer over and over again. at least 50 times.

That was a very nice comment you made, Paulo, about Sarah Michelle.

I read the book when they were filming th movie, they already had the cast out, and I dont think its possible for me to picture Veronika anyway else besides Sarah Michelle.

You wrote a fantasic book, I hope the film will do well with critics….it would be amaing to see Sarah Michelle to recieve an Oscar nomination for her role. And witht he looks of the trailer, maybe a Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay as well.

Wow! Finally, I’m going to see my favorite book on the theater screen!!

But I feel kind of anxious about it…

I just hope that the movie will be basically the same as what it is in the book… We cannot deny the fact that most people get disappointed when the film is a little too “modified” in such a way that they edit or change the supposed-to-be scenes into far more different ones.. Really different from what is written on the book.

But in spite this anxiety, I’m really excited! I think that Sarah Michelle Gellar will be able to justify her role as Veronika.. (I’ll keep my fingers crossed for that)

More Power to you, Paulo!

I have mixed feelings about this particular book becoming a movie, but if Paulo gives it his blessing I will see it.

Of all of Paulo’s books that I have read, this one has most moved me, followed me, and become a cornerstone of my current study. Maybe it is the connection I learned about Paulo’s personal past. Maybe it is my lifelong struggles with suicidal ideation. Maybe it is both my mother’s and my own time spent in mental institutions and reflecting on the reasons behind both.

Whatever the reason, my reading this book has accompanied an upheaval in my life. Major shifts in my livelihood (or lack thereof). Questions about my future and my purpose. Thank you, Paulo, for your commitment to sharing your life and path with others. It reminds me that my path is meant to be shared. For only in sharing can we receive and only in sharing can we heal.

A book that is very well written and greatly presented. I know I have “Veronica Decides to die”. It is a hard work and great art of a brilliant author. It is you “Paulo”.Well done.

After reading your book, I started serously thinking on the question which needs real research by great researchers in the world. Only one question which researchers should answer is that-

1)Why do people commit suicide?

Let me go through some of the things that I have figured out till date. There are many answers to the same question by many people and I may sometime agree on the issue and sometimes I may not agree at all.
The point is all do one thing which is “suicide”, although the execution and implementation of the suicide might be different. What causes the humans to commit for suicide? I think the suicide is higher in Women than in Male but why do people have to think that they are going to quit the life?

One common cause is that,

Humans
|
Problems
|
Sadness
|
Depression (Extensive)
|
Lack of purpose in living
|
Kill yourself

The process is Six step phenomenon where these six step phenomenon works like this.

1) Humans
We all are humans and we know there are our needs, our desire, career, life, relationship, friends, family, culture, country and our vision and motto for life. We know that we are going to achieve something or want something in our life. We have this quest and search for living happily ever after and smiling all the times (especially even in worries)

2)Problems
We all face problems. Our problems can be same and at the same time it can be different too. A personal problems such as lack of skill, lack of knowledge, divorce, physically obliged, sexually dissatisfied, displeasure, also work problems, career problems, struggling to make enough money, dreams and vision which results into self problems, distress, stress, anxiety, irritation, anger and grief and many more. These are all common problems that we face in daily life.

3)Sadness
The problems are the root cause of Sadness. The problem can result into Sadness. You feel sad, because you are going though divorce. Or, let us say, you feel dissatisfied because your friends earn better salary then you do, or let us say, you are facing career problems with no position offered for higher studies and so on. Therefore, the problems can result into Sadness in our lives.

4)Depression (Extensive)
(Why?) Well, Depression because this is root cause of making you think that you should quit your life. The depression especially extensive. It might come when you are alone, when there is nobody around you. When you feel lonely and you are in darkness. This might give you enough reasons to think that you should “check out” from your life.

5)Lack of Purpose in Living
We are humans and we live on purpose. We have a good purpose to live our life simply because we are either Engineers earning a good salary and we have a nice job or we are doctors serving patient daily, or we are professor giving lecture to the student, or we are authors writing and telling our stories all around, or we are artist who is painting his vision. Life is full of purpose and without purpose we lack everything. When there is feeling of lack of purpose in living then we think well, now I do not have anything to do. What if, you imagine that you do not have anything to do? what will happen when you do not have anything to do ?

6)Kill yourself
This is the best solution when all of your previous five steps are ready. When you are gone through above five steps or even few of them then you are finally ready to “check out” from your life. You do not feel anything in this state. You do not have any opinion on any body. You cannot take any lessons inside. Nothing can go inside you. Only thing that is going to make a mark in your life NOW-Kill yourself. Now, you want to see how would “I” be after I killed myself? Where would I go? Since Nobody wants me, why should I live anymore? There is NOBODY for me? I am alone and I was alone, why should I live? What is the purpose for me to live any longer? I am a burden in this earth? a

These question will drive a human to finally quit the life.

Therefore, when a human goes through these six steps they can really go for a long long holiday. The root cause of problems should be discovered early in the life. There are many ways to avoid it. Unlike going through these problems one should actually think about doing something positive and good.

1)Everybody in this earth are unique. They are made for some purpose.
2)All humans are born special and they should die special. (Not like a coward by committing suicide.)
3)There are never any reasons for “love”, there are never any reasons for you being alone.A man who loves his aloneness is capable of love, and a man who feels lonely is incapable of love.
http://mybheja.blogspot.com/2007/08/being-alone.aspx
4)Live not for yourself, live for others.
5)When you decide you want to kill yourself, first decide to smile at 1000 child.
6)Learning never stops and imagine being old writing book, telling your story to your grandchildren or your children, Everyday event adds to one page of journal in your life.
7)Think, Learn, Educate, See and Feel the world with similarities. Hope is the best medicine in darkness.

Good luck and live your life.

I have not read the book ” was decides to die” ( but I hope that the cinematographic adaptation remains faithful to book , that it does not change what you wanted transmit by the words , Paulo) As regards the topic, I would say ( like a singer disabled, called “grand corps malade”, said about the love “the love and its sister half hatred”): the life and half its sister death a small anything and everything can quickly switch … but good LIFE , the LIFE , vive la real life ;and that each one finds the path that leads to this real life…good holiday to all , good holidays and good year 2009 with the good resolutions , Love and Peace

(sorry oli, Here’s the translation, on the road to st Jacques , my thoughts will accompany you ALL )

I started reading ‘Veronica decides to die’ at 4 o’clock yesterday and I sat reading it until I … finished it at eleven, breathless! This is my way of ..discovering a book! Now I will take my time .. enjoying it. It is as in … ‘prima vista’ in music!
It is a valuable piece of art. Our minutest and most ‘secret’ emotions are in there. I am looking forward to watching the film. I believe that we will have it in Cyprus simultaneously with the international premiere.
I have noticed in the trailer that the have changed the … age of Veronica. In the book it is written: “At the age of 24″. I am sure that in the film we will listen to beautiful piano music. ‘Beethoven’s Moonlight Sonate.
Love,
Thelma

Sexual matters is one of our gifts we humans are given from our creator, and the true in our hearts, hav learned us to us it in the correct way. Sexuality is a language of the world to to souls witch are in true love. Nature is lovely

If the purpose was that we where going to share emotions to several people then we would be born different. Dance is that language.

Today I am angry, because I Norwegian layer, claims that children understandings this language so nice to show children sexual behavior. This layer is against, a new law that about to be written that a minimum punishment for abusement of children is three years. The pain of the child is much more than that so I should be lifetime punishment.

Dear Jules,

I read both books….Bernhard Schlink “the reader” and “Veronika decides to die”. I agree with you and your idea concerning the “actress”. Of course it is possible to learn a lot about different nations and their history, the way of living and feeling in different countries. And many good actors are able to reflect this.

But when certain books are transferred to a “movie” I like it, if complete “new” faces of unknown actors appear.

Merci.

I am going to see this film when it comes out, and I am trying not to make judgements.. Veronika decides to die is my favourite book but I was so disappointed when I heard “buffy the vampire slayer” was going to play the lead part… But then I haven’t seen it and it is rare of me to make such judgements…I so hope I can see the soul of veronika and of a woman who is about to face taking her life, the real soul not a dramatised one….as for the book fantastic….

They made a movie? Ups, I did not know that, how interesting.

I am personally very sceptical when books are transferred into the media form of movies.

I mean for me to see that Sarah Michelle Gellar is going to portrait Veronika is already dividing my mind. I mean, she is an American actor that is going to present an Eastern European figure (I mean isn’t the storyline set in Slovenia? Sorry, I haven’t read the book in quite a while?)

It is the same thing with the upcoming publication of the movie “The Reader”, which is based on the book itself, written by the German author Bernhard SChlink about a German societal confrontation…and who plays teh main part? Kate Winslet a British actress. Don’t get me wrong, they are all great actors but for me it correlates with the story of the book itself.

Just a thought.
