Saving the Planet

by Paulo Coelho on February 2, 2009

What do you think of this motto save the planet?

For me its quite cynical because, at the end of the day, if we dont take care of the planet it will destroy us. But we put ourselves in a position that we are saving something and this may be good for our ego but it is ultimately unrealistic. If we dont care of the planet, we will be destroyed not the planet.

But this is my opinion and I look forward to hear yours.

It’s true, MANKIND needs to be saved from itself. It’s time to ask for divine intervention from the Masters to usher in change on a global scale.

Dear All,

Do you think Earth is so limited in power that “we” can destroy it?
Mother Earth has life, she is known for her endurance and abundance.

Yes, she would destroy you if you try to destroy her. You get what you give; you show care and love for each and everything in the creation, you will be cared and loved by Nature.

We all are facing hazards of pollution, the reason is not that the Earth is giving up, its because we are giving up. Giving up on love and care.

I pray God to help us all be with Nature. Let us start with ourselves and help others. Let us not force anybody until they realize and take action themselves in their own way.

Love,
Meera

Jessica, Paul
I like both of your ideas.)

Now let me give my opinion on this issue–

Humans and Nature are integral entity which is important to both. Why and how I will explain soon.

There is still lack of proper research on who was the “first human” and who created them. There are evidences from the “relgious texts” and many religious text depending upon the religion a person follows vary.

Well do not make your own conclusion at this very point. Wait a moment,

Now as asked by Paulo, How can we save the planet?

Many of us will agree that, we live on the planet called Earth. We need to save the elements present on this planet called Earth.

Think of this as following metaphor-
“Imagine a Vessel with full of water, Is Vessal or that jar or box which contains water is important or is water important?”

Who is the one who decides if water is important or Jar? We humans, think we are important. The “Water” but think if Jar or Vessal does not exits then, where would you then put “water”?

Think…

Think again …

OK, Now your Brain has given up, We can reach to this conclusion that, Both the Water and Vessal is important. Why? Because without the Vessal there is no water and without Water the importance of value of Jar or Vessal is “0″ or Null or void.

Let us suppose, I am the Creator of the Vessal and the Water. If I am the Creator then I will think both are important to me. I will keep water as well as vessal or jar.

But as the “water” is getting dirty, because of other elements such as pollution or something then what will I do then?

I will try to clean the water and put the next water in the Vessal. This is what I will do.

Because, I have to give the vessal of water to my friends and they are thirsty, they want to drink a pure water.

The same process is what is going on in Today’s world. We are making the water impure, we are in the crisis (Economy, War, Terrorism, Rape, Murder, Suicide, Bombings, Killings, Religion, Politics, Land and Poverty) to name few.

Please do not agree with me, Please.

But since I am the creator atleast I can assume. If at this very moment, I will say that, “I am the messenger of the God”. Every body will laugh at me and say, “You are the idiot and stupid.”

What if, from the bottom of my heart ask me to write- “I am God”.

It does not mean, I can perform miracles as we all expect God to do but that part of my body which says that I am God is invisible.

I think not only me, all of us are God.

We do not have to pray our religious text and religious books to find the God, Please disagree with me and stop reading. But, I will not stop to say that, “We all are God”.

Or, To make things little easier,

Assume We all are God and now our moral, social, religious, enviromental and whatever responsibilites are-

“To protect water and the jar” which means to protect us and mother earth or planet as said by Paulo.

How?

1. Be truthful.
It does not mean, you should be truthful to your partner or in your job. Be truthful to yourself. Listen to your “inner voice” which will guide you to the other side. No body should teach you to be truthful but yourself. Be honest and truthful. Becuase once you start being truthful, all of objects around you will be attracted towards you. Believe me. You will be in different world all together.

2. Smile
To whom?, Smile at yourself. Many of us do not like our own body, our own physical look and we hate ourselves, how can you love others if you do not know to love yourself? To love yourself, you have to smile at yourself too. Not only when you are feeling good but also when you are feeling sad, nostalgic and depressed. Can you do it? Well, this is one God saying to another God. And we all are God so believe me you will understand what smile means.

Now you know how to be truthful, and to smile at yourself. What will happen when all the objects around you trust you, because you just decided that you are truthful to yourself. They will start to smile at you too. Which means, object around you are smiling at you. You cannot see them, you will not feel them but you will get power to attract them very easily. Let us now jump to number 3.

3. Help
Happiness comes with help, goes with pleasure of being helped. Save a penny, save not for yourself but take out that penny and give it to the person who is singing near railway station, who is begging by performing some art, who is begging to you and asking for help. Look into the eyes of those who need them, give it to them. Giving is what we writers do, giving is what Gods do and still do not forget the main theme-”We are all God”. Do not think, please that you cannot give, think how should you give.

Writers give opinion, ideas, books, Philoshoper gives philosphy, Musician gives music, Poet gives poem, Medical Doctor give health checkup, Nature gives care, protection, environment, different climate and seasons. Everything around us, either Nature of humans we are givers and takers.

Therefore, Now we have learned three basic things which can save our plant.

-Being truthful, Smiling and Helping.

Now some of you will ask how can being truthful, smiling and helping will help the entire planet?

(Scientific explantion)
It is simple, as our metaphor of “water and vessal”, water is composed of molecules which are atoms and these atoms are single in the entity. Which could be interpreted with one single human living on this planet. When water becomes dirty of impure then it implies it is not entire community of atoms which are dirty but some of the atoms which are influenced by neighbouring atoms.

Solution: Just try to remove those atoms or give the advice to “change themselves”.

(Other perspectives)

Now, As explained in Scientific way- A general ways is that, WE are the collection of people or individuals living on this planet. Some are good and some are bad, many are changing ourselves and when majority of things increase, evolution of “something different” starts or begins.

Till now, if you have not understood what I wanted to say then contact me personally or write me email.

Remember, you are the creators and it is your responsibility to save the “water with vessal or vessal with water”

Good day!

A long walk begins with one single step. Does it really matter why we decided to “save our planet”? Of course we do it just for us and for selfish considerations. We “have to do it” because it is the “right thing to do”, not because we really want it. We always do good things in order to be appreciated by other people, to make them say we are good men/women/politicians. We save it because we need our planet, for ourselves or for our children, not because the planet is something bigger than us. There is always a “reason” under our decisions, even if we do not realize that, even if we think we are not taking advance from that decision.
It is a complicated topic and my english is not good enough… I just hope that we will be selfhish enough to save it before it is too late.

I think we should save the planet, just because we have a mother…and our mother is the planet. I would do anything to save my mother if she is in danger, as she did anything to save me when I was weak.

We should save the planet because it’s a world, a huge world with many lives and many new-born lives every second everywhere. Because if we don’t Save, the planet will be destroyed, because it takes care of us, if we are not there, who will it take care of..?
So many years ago, when we were not here on earth, it could live without us….but no, you can’t get someone’s love when she just has it in her hand…she won’t let, she will be destroyed if there isn’t any love…

Thank you for this entry! I agree.

So many have lives out of control, especially at this time of global economic crisis. Thinking they can contribute to “saving the planet” gives them the illusion they can control something, when they can’t control other aspects of their lives. They anthropomorphize the planet. “Saving the plant” is politically- and environmentally-correct, a pat on their backs. But it is not realistic the planet needs saving; it is we who need saving.

People often confuse conservation with saving the planet.

Estimado Paulo,

Produce leche.

Mirjam

Aborigines/native tribes of all countries, lived in harmony with the planet. The pagans lived harmoniously with the cycles of the planet. They prayed to gods and goddesses of the sun and the moon, and believed that what they did was connected to what the sun and the moon dished out.

As our populations grew and the struggle for dominance began, humans have been unable to live in harmony with anyone or anything. Religions can’t live in harmony with other religions, cultures struggle with other cultures, races fight with other races, about assets we do or don’t have, for dominance.

Jihan – You are right we reap what we sow, and we haven’t sown anywhere near as much as we’ve taken when it comes to the planet. We continue to take the planet’s minerals, forests, and water, from the ground and deep within. What we give back is our trash, our pollution. But when we take, we have a price to pay, and the price we are paying is obvious.

Pandora – your comment “We are thieving from our Mother’s house, what sort of person does that?” We do that, in our arrogance and our ignorance. We live in a world where we think we must have, have, have. To do this we must continually take. Consumption and consumerism, is what our failed economy has relied on, with no thought of consequences, just greed. Looking at it from your perspective Pandora, we should be discusted in ourselves, for what we have become.

‘Save the planet.’ We really need to save ourselves from what we have become. Perhaps what is happening to our planet is a lesson in humility and the importance of respect.

If one’s pride overpowers one’s compassion then their confidence means nothing. If one considers themselves insignificant- then it will be a self fulfilling prophecy and they’ll become weak.

The world is the world- it is mostly the universe’s problem. We can only do what we can do on a daily basis, this is not to undermine efforts to make the world better, it’s just sometimes people have a lot of ‘platitudes’, but not many solutions.
I agree with the mystic Edgar Casey: Find an ideal. Without ideals we are nothing. Do what you can with what is in front of you, that is the best way to combat what is going on it the world. Otherwise people lose sleep over ridiculous thoughts such as: “People don’t have food, so having food should make me feel miserable…OR…. the world is at war, but here there is relative peace, to enjoy it is a crime…”

It’s all relative. It’s all balance.

I think the three most important words in any language are these, because they will save the world: Love, Gratitude, Forgiveness.

saving the nature by action ….

Today, I opened an email asking me to join my signature to a petition to avoid a disaster:

The Brazilian Congress votes now for a project which will reduce the Forest of Amazonia to 50 % of its size.

The sector which we want to deforest represents 4 times the size of Portugal and would be mainly used for the agriculture and the pastures for the cattle.

All the wood must be sold to the international markets by big multinational companies under the shape of wooden slices. The fact is that the ground of the forest of Amazonia is useless without the forest. it is very acid and the region is inclined to the frequent floods.
This day, more than 160 000 square kilometres, deforested in the meme drank, are abandoned and began a process of desertification. The deforestation and the treatment of the wood in this scale free in the atmosphere of the enormous quantities of carbon, so stressing the greenhouse effect and the climate change.

I thus join my signature to 923 already registered names, because

We live in an economical system which backbone is that we keep consuming. Without that we produce and continue to buy these products this system fall apart. If we want our race to survive we will need to turn this around and start thinking about what we ReallY need. We don’t need more things, but we do need each other.
I think there might be a beginning there – to stop consuming products and start consuming more of services. It might sound cold, but I believe we’re heading in that direction and that it should be more encouraged. Everyone have afterall something to give to society.

To save our planet we should be less selfish and think of our environment. Nowadays, people are shifting away from nature because they are glued to machines (computers, TV, video games..). Children should be encouraged to enjoy outdoor recreation in order to love nature . Once they appreciate nature, they’ll work hard to protect it.

The deteriorating health of our planet is due to our love affair with machines ( computers, TV, video games…). Nowadays, people are shifting away from outdoors recreation to machines. And being away from nature let people become more selfish and narrow-minded. So we should encourage children to enjoy outdoor activities because when they love nature, they’ll protect it.

I think planet needs to rest for a bit, to hibernate, in order to recharge its own creative energies. We eat too much, we consume to much of it, more than we actually need. And for a smal pleasure that we will soon forget, perhaps we destroy half of a forest.

We are so SPOILLED…Yach! I hate myself…

When you force the planet to create or produce, then it’s when you do it wrong. Don’t force anything, just … let it be as God let it be to serve us in its own rythm, the rythm of the planet.

Earth is not enough anymore for us…Humans are like mouses, like garbage bugs that multiply and multiply and eat and destroy, then move to another house and repeat the whole cycle. The problem is that we know that, and still continue to consume…

Well, if I not consume energy, I wont be able to talk to you now on this blog.

Anyway, plannet is forced to produce faster then it was designed to be. That is a sign we force God’s hand.

Paulo! I think you have a remarkable perspective on this that is little mentioned. Basically it should be: “Save yourself by helping the planet” because that is essentially what we will be doing. If we fail in our mission to “save the planet”, then we have ultimately failed in the mission to save ourselves and will be destroyed.

Save the planet = save yourself

Thank you for your insight, wonderful as always.

Dear Paolo,

when we talk about “saving the planet” I suspect we really mean saving ourselves.

Hardly anyone has tender feelings for “the planet” in their heart that are stronger than the feelings they have for themselves or their friends and family.

I suppose rather than “save” the planet, we should be in harmony with the earth. We should examine our own actions in a critical light, always thinking whether what we do is helping or is destroying.

We could start with growing some of our own food, in appreciation of what a little patch of earth, some sunlight and some water, can bring forth. Once we grow our own and our neighbors’ food, we can take pride in having contributed to saving the planet from the excesses of factory farming and from the insanity of transporting food for thousands of miles. That would be a good start.

I don’t know if it’s to late to ‘save the planet’ for us…every time hurricanes are stronger, floods are worst in some places while droughts are getting longer and so on and on. We blame the weather, but the weather is responding to whatever we have made to our earth for a long period of time and still.
Like Rui L. Pires said above, the planet doesn’t need us, we need it!… we are reacting too late to this.
Gracias!

Save ourselves is the relevant action. The planet and its species will adapt to new conditions.

Dear Paulo,

In response to your question, “Save the Planet” is only an expression that implies that if we save the planet or take care of it, we will “save” or take care of ourselves in the process.

Like you say in the Alchemist, everything is connected, and this is the perfect example of interconnectedness. We cannot hurt the Earth, Gaia, and not hurt ourselves back in one way or another.

We must live as one with Nature, and although the modern world makes it difficult, we should strive for this. Perhaps the most accurate expression would be “Let’s save ourselves and our children’s legacy by protecting the environment”.

Earth is a living entity, our Mother. It is spirit manifested! It absorbs all our vibrations and … reacts accordingly. As we need harmony in our three bodies, so Earth needs from us to respect her. We are ONE. One between ourselves, human beings, but One with the Universe.
Once, I was meditating within a metaphysical circle and we were told to use our imagination and ‘see’ ourselves in a white Light, for good health and harmony in ourselves. Then, we were told to do the same, visualizing our country [for peace and well being] and then our planet, the Earth!
So I think, we can … try to save the Earth, using our imaginative power, thinking, energy and LOVE.
LOVE,
Thelma

I’m very into saving the planet, because I’m very concerned of how much is being destroyed these days. My opinion is that even the smallest efford makes difference. I dont know why I believe this, it might be only hope, but after all a person continues to leave because he hopes, and because he dreams.

And I dream of a place, where people are concerned, and care for the environment around them. I hope, and dream that there will coma a day when each one of us will know whats best for the planet we live on. After all its our home, and you have to care about the place you call home. Once everyone will understand what exactly they are doing to our planet earth I hope that they’ll try to save, what’s left to be saved as soon as possible…

And there’s yet plenty more to save on this little planet… I love Earth and I would do anything to save her, even from her own children, us…

The thought of the motto is great, but humans wants to think and act them selves, not told what to do.

Earth is perfect
We are not
Emotions are good
Feelings are in harmony
The world is in peace and love

I agree a 100%. Ultimately the planet is fine… it has a good immune system. If we behave like parasites we will be wiped out. Period.

First of all thanks Paulo Coelho to open this topic. I totally agree with Paulo Coelho. On the further side of words and science, we should look around us at first. I’m intresting in mountain climbing just because of a love for the nature that i feel deep inside of my heart. İf one year i saw an huge icefield, next year when i go that mountain again, that would have already been thaw. This is so sad for me.I think it’s not a problem about becoming conscious. Even though there are so many people who have faced with this problem and try to find another ways and solutions, also there are so many people as much that try to keep themselves away from the nature and problems of the nature. This is about their choice and mentality but i can’t understand how do they think that they are unconnected from the most important problem of our planet. Even if we live in a city, cities were established in the nature. In my opinion, we have two options; we have to take more responsibility or we could give ourselves in our ego and watch “the perfect disaster” of our planet. In fact it would be a big shame for us.

I saw the movie The Day The Earth Stood Still – there was this sentence that Keanu Reeves told to the human race: “The Earth dies, you die. You die, the Earth survives.” That´s true.
And I agree that by saying “save the planet” we give ourselves the feeling that we are noble and better than the rest of us.
But in the end, the Earth will survive, even if it has to kill us all.

“If we dont care of the planet, we will be destroyed not the planet.” so if you just reverse the phrase…

“if we care about the planet, we will be ‘saved’ – together with the planet” – so although it is a kind of egocentric point of view, it also has a “win-win” scent…

Isn’t there an old native American poem which holds the words what we do to the earth we do to ourselves?I think it is about time to see the small wonders of our world( people talk of the 7 wonders but for whom?).To enjoy the rain for the blessings it gives us.To enjoy our trees and gardens. To stop erecting fences and grow green stuff. To plant seeds everywhere and for as long as we love this earth we save her after all we all sleep in her cradle.

We can’t save the Planet and more, the Planet does not need to saved either! The Planet has been around long before we showed up and will continue to exist long after we are gone. We do have the obligation, maybe a moral duty and self-respect, to do everything we can, to NOT be the reason of our own demise.

Dear Paulo Coelho,
It’s funny- but I see the human relationship with this earth the same as I do any relationship of love. Like that between two people, we are of one another. This love we desire and want to desire us is within us. We are damaging ourselves by looking to the earth to fulfill us without our nurturing it as we should nurture ourselves. We are of the earth. We are of the 4 elements and the truth of this is the senses with which we experience it. Perhaps our relationship with the earth is just as good or bad as the relationship we have within ourselves as a whole. As it stands love has always existed and has always brought us exactly what we need. I will trust it to do what it always has, does now, and will do in respect to our relationship with the earth. It is not surprising to me that during this unbalanced masculine period that the world is as un-nurtured as the man and the woman. If we balanced this masculine/feminine we might come full circle so to speak. When we find earth we find that we are standing on it, that we are physical. Deterioration of the earth is deterioration of the body from whence it came and finally returns.

Ear to ear smile,
Alice Faye

I agree completely. I feel the same way about it. We can’t distinguish ourselves from “the planet.” We are a part of the planet.
