Today’s Question by the reader : Ken

by Paulo Coelho on February 4, 2009

How significant will the arts play in world relations and shedding light in a dark world?

Dear Ken,

I believe that the arts – and in particular storytelling – are one of the rare bridges left between cultures.
There are so many divides between people nowadays but I believe that a story has this immense power to bring people together. This is because it basically speaks to something that never alters in people : their hearts and imagination.

When we were children we did not think about differences, black or white, etc. We just played, enjoed our life, feeled the pleasure in all. When we grew up, we started to see differences, maybe to exaggerate them in our minds.

I agree with Paulo Coelho, in case that story unites us. And I think it is because story wakes sth childish in our heart, sth innocent and pure.

Story telling is the most widely used form of spreading the word. It not only tells us of ones culture but if heartfelt, it will make your sense go on overdrive as well. It is the most used way of communicating both to the young and old alike and it is still used to this day to make us closer to one another.

Art is definitely important to expressing and addressing the problems and solutions to things in creative ways. However, will the role of art become greater in the future? I’m not sure to be honest. The current mentality I see is everyone focusing on what will make money in order to “fix” the global economic crisis. It’s funny how this crisis came about at the same time that we are finding proof of global warming. It’s as if the planet is freezing the destructive force of consumerism. I truly hope there will come the day when a painting painted by someone as a gift is seen as more beautiful then a large watch. Or when we do not look at what materials we have but how we can all dream together. Maybe I sound like a liberal hippy… oh well at the moment I think it doesn’t sound like a bad idea.

i believe that art , books stories, play, movies can bring people together. and i believe that if we open our minds to the culture and we can feel the quality of these happening, it might help a lot to many people and society to be more united- specially if the polititians dont get involved!!!!!!!!

I believe the arts are crucial to the evolution of our world. Its a form of communication that allows each individual an opportunity to view an ‘image’ or perception through the interpretation of another.

An example of this is the movie Slumdog Millionaire. I was tremendously influenced by this film whereas my soul and mind made a connection. In that connection I am able to look at my past in a different way now. I also have a glimpse into the slums of Mumbai. What I found amazing is that the people who lived in the slums didn’t allow their environment to crush their will to live. This movie shows the spirit of an enterprising people, daily working, adjusting and living amidst conditions that seem unbearable. I found strength, faith, love, all communicated through this form of art. Books, films, dance theatre, paintings, all communicate some form of the human spirit that connects each of us to one another.

I believe the arts communicate the soul of a people that transcends, race, gender, socioeconomics, etc.

Homer was a legendary epic poet in Ancient Greece. His is the author of the epic poems Iliada and Odyssey. It was an .. oral story telling.
As a child I used to enjoy my Grandmothers and Grandfathers stories.. Most of the traditional stories were told ..from mouth to mouth.. Beautiful rich fantasy worlds full of ..heroes, dragons, fairies, magicians. gods and goddesses. I remember myself being three years old telling stories to …my sister although she was older than me!!
Then at school the History lesson and the books that we used to read secretly : ‘LOLITA’, Lady’s Chatterley Lover’ but also Anna’s Frank diary, that made me cry and the Greek literature.
Every book, for me, is a wonderful new world. Another perspective of life.., new emotions, new ideas that can reach every ‘thirsty’ and ‘open’ heart. It is said that many wars were won with ..the PEN.
Your … weapon, dear Paulo Coelho.
LOVE,
Thelma

I really like stories,is wonderful how many varieties of the same story one might find.Practically, the phantasie of people has no boundaries. The nice thing is comparing the phenomena to that of the oral story tellers, who were adding each time one or more details to the previous form of the story.
