Dear Paula,

I also wanted to say “Thank you” for sharing your pictures with us and for talking to us about them.

You know, it is strange: One can find so much inspiration and wisdom in your work and when I looked at them the first time, I was convinced that the artist was a man, maybe around 50. And there you are, not fitting to my prejudices at all. What a pleasant surprise!

Once again: Thank you!

Love,
Petra

This picture is so magical for me. It’s like a hypnotism where it leads you to another world. I like it. I can call that Different Worlds or Another World. :)

A challenge…Paulo….do you choose these images? Does someone just want to stimulate conversation?

Not what I would have expected.

Time for a wake up call.

Dear Paula,

I saw your video, congratulations !

Still I do not like this Image of the Day, maybe reason is in the fact that I do not wish to have power over anybody and hate even a thought of being under spell or overpowered myself.

Wow, I am so impressed! Paula, you are fantastic! And I am so very glad that I came here this morning a saw your video post. The great mystery is solved at last! Now we know who the artist truly is, and why we couldn’t locate any of these works online. Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with us, as well as all of your amazing collages. I would love to see these in a gallery somewhere, that is, if they have a physical form. If not, then in some cyberspace gallery.

I also have to say that you, with your work, have greatly inspired me. I do collage myself – only as a sort of hobby – but I do it the old fashioned way: with mat knife, ruler and glue. This is somewhat tedious and it definitely has its limitations, but when I learned my art there were no programs such as Photo Shop, and I just never converted over. As well, most of my pieces have a 3-dimensional element: I use a lot of glitter, sequins, and rhinestones (the “glow” of the Divine), as well as the occasional “found object,” glued on or otherwise attached to and incorporated in the image itself. Still, seeing the wonderful works you have produced makes me want to run out and buy Photo Shop and Illustrator, and learn how to use them immediately.

In many ways, Paula, your illustrations remind me a lot of my favorite deck of Tarot Cards, one of the two decks I use most often: The Oracle of the Radiant Sun, by Caroline Smith, which is a collage deck that also incorporates many alchemical images, as well as similar Victorian era engravings. I am wondering, as well, if you have ever heard of the concept of SoulCollage, developed by Jungian therapist, Seena Frost? Here are a couple of links:
http://www.soulcollage.com
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4zw4-WbCd0w

SoulCollage is becoming very popular in the US, and many SoulCollage workshops are springing up all across the country. Though I have never been to one of these, I have read about the process, which is based in Jungian psychology, and find its tenets fascinating. The great thing about collage (this kind of collage) – as opposed to painting, illustration or similar artforms – is that literally anyone can do it! You needn’t have a background in art. No training or particular skill or “talent” is required. Anyone can cut out, manipulate and paste images on a cardboard background. And the goal in this process is not to create “art,” but rather, to discover and reveal one’s innermost self. SoulCollage is a path of self-discovery. The cards are created for personal use and enjoyment alone, and through the process of creating and working with them, one is led to a higher state of consciousness.

This, I think,is very similar to the way the alchemists and other ancient mystics viewed their illustrations. Sometimes they were produced for teaching purposed, or as a means of passing down an esoteric tradition without revealing it to the world at large, but they were also tools which the mystic used to explore and fathom the inner-most reaches of the individual subconscious and ultimately the Collective Unconscious (or Universal Mind of God) – these images, in the very process of their creation, led the seeker to the Divine.

Thank you again, Paula, for sharing both your wonderful images as well as your thoughts with us. Thank you also for your kind comments! You are very talented and an inspiration to us all, I am sure. The Warrior of Light within you shines through your artwork for all the world to see.

Best Regards,
Sincerely,
Savita

Have to say that I agree with Catherine – if I have to decipher something, I prefer Fludd over the Victorian era any day. I’m never sure if the Victorians are serious, or just playing around. Fludd, on the other hand, was divinely inspired. At least I know there is a meaning, even if I don’t quite get it.

Indeed, “The Hypnotist” might be a good title, or, as Marie-Christine suggests, “Spellbound.”

The spell-maker and the spell-bound, in a mystical ambiance created of stars, the moon and the planet Saturn. In astrology, Saturn is known as the Greater Malefic, bringer of sorrows and hardship. It represents the material conditions of life which limit what we can and cannot achieve – powers which hold sway over us and over which we have no say. On the positive side, it represents order (but also known as the “norms” and “rules” of society. The other interesting attribute of Saturn, astrologically speaking, is that it takes 29 years for the planet to make one orbit around the sun, pass through all twelve signs and return to the degree it occupied at the moment of a persons birth. Thus, there is a phenomenon termed “Saturn’s Return,” which occurs first at around the age of 30, then again at around 60, and finally, at 90. Each of these junctures marks a major turning point in the subject’s life. One day you wake up, and nothing is ever the same again. Then, about thirty years later, the phenomenon repeats itself – major changes sweep through your life, like a tornado, leaving very little, if anything that is recognizable in its path.

But the one thing that stands out, of up-most interest to me in this illustration – the most peculiar element – is the icosidodecahedron that floats between the two subjects. What is the meaning of this? I have no idea. I only recognize it from Leonardo da Vinci’s famous geometric illustrations. I think he may have been the first one to draw an accurate illustration of it. Sacred Geometry was at its peak during the Renaissance, and Da Vinci employed it in many ways in his art, but what the icosidodecahedron represented for Da Vinci or what it symbolizes for mathematicians who are able to comprehend it fully, is not something known to me. If anyone else has the answer, I would be curious to know. I am sure, however, that it meant something to the person who created this illustration.

When I just gaze at the illustration, thinking nothing, I find it a rather uncomfortable image: Who is casting the spell on whom? And is it for good, or for evil? It is genuine, or just a ruse devised to exploit a paying audience?
