  • Paulo: This is so neat, to be able to comment on your blog of today. Is today a special day, April 24? It's special, to be the second to pose an entry!!

I think it's so important to travel to see other places and find out about other people. If you can't, then there are books, thank God!, that can take you to other places and to read others' thoughts, and experience what they have seen or know.

You are the second Brazilian reader that I have read. The other is the incomparable Jorge Amado, who I find was a great romantic. Does anyone write like that anymore? Your styles are so different, but you are now the great Brazilian realist. Am I wrong?

  • My theory on caring (my blog post on October 19, 2007 – 4:16am)

“When I witness the few times when people care, I feel hope. Like the other day, a co-worker I hardly know, voluntarily picks up packets of sugar with me after I spilled hundreds of them on the floor…or maybe the time my parents’ neighbour, Brad along with his dog Niko, stops to chat with me on the street about random things. Usually, I encounter co-workers who are too busy complaining about how their life “sucks” or worse, I get unwelcome stares or none at all from strangers I say “Hi” to on the street. It seems like people in our society have turned a blind eye to their neighbours and made our world an impersonal one.

For me, caring was always something I wanted to do…not because something great came out of it in the end. It’s because I feel like there isn’t enough in this world and people who don’t care – deserve to be cared for the most. I’ve always been lucky to be loved so much by family and friends that the act of caring is kind of like an outcome. It’s like a feeling of so much love that you have enough to give. Maybe that’s what the world is missing… ”

Today my father has his birthday. He made me laugh, telling that is approaching the worlds end. How? I asked him. He said because all the beasts are loving each other, in tv he saw the news that the enemies parties now are like friends…

  • A quote also from my blog :-)
    ——————————
If we listened to our intellect, we’d never have a love affair.
    We’d never have a friendship.
We’d never go into business, because we’d be cynical.
    Well, that’s nonsense.
You’ve got to jump off cliffs all the time and build your wings on the way down.

  • Hi, thank you for this wonderful opportunity!

I would just like to share my thoughts about your lovely book The Alchemist, as excerpted from an article I wrote in my blog. These are, of course, merely my own thoughts and others likely have had a different experience with the book, and so I would enjoy hearing other people’s thoughts about what the book meant for them.

Coelho stated that The Alchemist is a “metaphor” of his own life. Much like the story’s protagonist, he already had a job from which he took pride and pleasure in doing, a woman whom he surely loved, and as well as other necessities in life for which to be content with. What he didn’t have, however, was the fulfillment of his dream. His “Personal Legend”, as it’s constantly called throughout the book. I guess for some, the idea relates to their concept of destiny, or for others perhaps their so-called purpose in life. Others might simply call it their ambition, or lifelong aspiration. But whatever it is, Coelho’s story endeavors to inspire the reader to pursue it. And this is what the novel is ultimately all about—to have the passion, the courage, the faith and the unfailing determination to follow something you believe in. The book also teaches that in our pursuit to find our life’s treasure, what we pick up along the journey—the people we meet and the experiences we get—is sometimes even more valuable than what we had set out to look for, and the original treasure becomes more of a trophy for what we’ve already accomplished.

In any case, this of course does not make the book unique. Coelho’s allegorical novel is essentially a romanticized self-help book. What actually makes it good, however, is the story itself. The story of Santiago’s quest is simple and pleasant. But like any good fable, the book’s simplistic form is only somewhat of an innocent deception that masks its highly philosophical quality. The short prologue by itself is a lovely story. Retelling the tale of Narcissus with an amusing twist, the book begins with a wonderful lesson from an unlikely story—the lesson that if we reflect the beauty of others, allowing them to see through our eyes that they are special, we too in effect make ourselves beautiful and special.

    My full review.

  • Today, April 24th.

In remembrance of the 1.5 million Armenians killed during the genocide by the Turks in 1915!

I pray this stops everywhere and never ever happens again!

  • No love at first sight!

After 3 years of a beautiful and lovable relationship with her, i have understood one thing very interesting,if not others. To me there is no love at first sight. The first sight only causes an impulse to be in other person’s company. The company grows into a relationship. And with the growth to that relationship, love evolves. Love is not the impulse because if it were, it would end as soon as it comes into being.Love takes time to grow.

    Love grows.

Its you and the person on whom your love depends. You both have to be, so that love is there. The efforts of both are needed in order that love may find expression. Its always there in your heart, you just have to bring it out.

  • REFLEXÕS AMBIENTAIS

    A IN-SUNTABILIDADE HUMANA PROMOVENDO SOLIDARIEDADE
