It disturbs me a bit when interviewers seem to be trying to make their own point by manipulating the words of the person being interviewed, or by trying to control the direction of the interview too tightly. I think if you are going to interview someone, you should let them speak, and without imposing an agenda of your own. It was subtle, but it was there. Still yet, it was a great interview. Thanks, Paulo, for sharing it with us. All of your interviews are great, because I’ve seen others (one in particular that I can think of) wherein the interviewer was obviously trying only to get across her own message, and even in spite of this, your sincerity and your passion for your work prevailed and completely eradicated all her efforts to twist the thing to fit her own agenda. When one is sincere and honest and humble as you are, they cannot be manipulated. It’s like placing a serpent next to a dove and saying, “Which one do you believe?”

Journalist:this novel is “The winner stands alone” and it isn’t due to hazard that it’s coming out just few days before the Cannes Festival.The festival that you “have a dig at” in your novel(sorry don’t know how to traduce really)
So is the date of release really due to hazard?
Paulo:No,no it isn’t due to hazard.I think the festival is really important.The book is more about what is going on around that festival.When I was a kid,the Palme d’or was really important and today I think we are talking more about fashion and many things than the movies themselves.
Phillipe Vallet:Mr Coelho,”The winner stands alone” is a tale and so like all tales it is dreadful and captivating,this time,you,who have written “The Alchemist” and a dozen of other books,you have set the action during the Cannes festival,but this is not the world like we think we know it.You are describing a croisette where the powerful are crushing the weakest and where everyone is stuck in their own illusions.So to bring up this universe,you have imagined a serial killer,Igor,who belongs to the russian oligarchy and this psychopath accumulate the crimes in order to have back the woman he loves.Consequences,this novel has the characteristics of a thriller,the rythmic of a thriller,the perfume of a thriller but it isn’t really a thriller because we know the murderer’s indentity from the start.Plus the hero is a bit paradoxal because he’s killing in the name of love.So this novel must be a bit atypical for you Paulo,no?”
Paulo:”You are perfectly right in the sense that it isn’t a thriller.It is a portrait of our time.But it isn’t only about the serial killer who kill in the name of love.We have seen that love is a force that can be dangerous.It can lead us to hell or paradise,so Igor,the serial killer in “The winner stands alone” is also a metaphor to describe the forces of love not really well controlled.
Philippe vallet:so who is this man?Who is Igor?
Paulo:Igor is,like I said,the portrait of our time.We are trying to justify everything by giving a good reason to,but i think we are faraway from the real values of life,the ones of love and work..the most important is to do something that really speaks to your heart and forget about society norms and what they want us to be(sorry about the bad traduction here)
Philippe Vallet:so we could think that we are far from your world the book is also a pamphlet about show business with a real description of the Cannes festival,I would say even like a documentary about Cannes.It’s really accurate.You describe luxuary,fashion and apparences and by contrast cinematographic art.In your novel there are many things colliding.
Paulo:Absolutely.I think collision is really important in our life.I mean if you look now we are in Springtime and the winter is a bit sad because it collides with spring.I think the collision and confrontation is something important in life but to be in confrontation with ourselves doesn’t do us good.
Philippe vallet:you are describing a super class from Cannes.We are few days from the festival now,what are the keys to understand Cannes?
Paulo:I don’t really have the keys to understand Cannes.When I go to Cannes,it’s more to see the movies,but the first time I have been there,I was surprised because I was waiting..
Philippe Valet:are they people who are higher?Who really dominate?
Paulo:of course.Those are people that you don’t know,they don’t stay at the hotels,they don’t go to the parties but I know those people,as a writer I have my contacts,but..
Philippe vallet:Are they the producers?The distributors?Financiers?
Paulo:yes,yes and especially financiers.Let’s say it’s especially the financiers because there,they are the ones who pull the strings.
Philippe Vallet:celebrity is at the center of your book.You are talking about the ones who aspire to be famous like Warhol was talking about 20/30 years ago.But after all you are famous Mr Paulo Coelho.
Paulo:And so are you Mr Vallet.
Philippe Vallet:what is wrong in being famous?We can have a sense of pride in being famous no?
Paulo:You are famous as well..I think that if we have something to say,one day celebrity can come or might not come;But now people are doing the contrary.They want to be famous before saying what they have to say.I think as long as you have something to say,celebrity might come or not but is a consequence,but today people want to be famous just to be famous.We see that in the reality tv shows,how can I put it?
Philippe Valet:we can put it like that actually.

Paulo:people want to be famous just to be famous.We need to have something to share before and then after celebrity can come or not but you will be at least happy that you have shared something.
Journalist:is it why there’s a lot of violence in life?
Paulo:yes I think there’s a lot of violence in the society.
Philippe valet:After all what you write,you are still having pleasure in following the festival.you are living all over those emotions like when you were a kid,as you said,by following the palmares each year.
Paulo:Exactly;I think that the festival is a mark and I think Gilles Jacob has succeeded in maintaining this mark even now.I don’t know how is going to be the next festival because we are in a crisis now.But we see that the mark “Palme d’or” the mark “Cannes festival” has survived to all the tentatives of destruction.
Philippe vallet:Paulo,after some periods of doubt,a long time ago now,You have written books that we can qualifie as spritual tales who are relating about God,christian message but also about meditation even spiritism and about that belief that we have all a destiny.So what are you thinking of the recent declarations of the pope Benoit XVI?
Paulo:I’m disappointed.As a catholic,it’s a bit complicated to talk openly because I think we belong to the same family.We need to discuss family problems between family,but the pope as he has crossed,let’s say the limits,he spoke about social things ect..I’m really disappointed but I continue to be a catholic because i think catholicism goes beyond the pope.

et je me dis qu’un jour de décembre, j’ai été amené devant chez vous pour vous laisser un message….et qu’un jour j’aurai plaisir à vous voir pour vous parler de certaines choses importantes.

Sinon, je poursuis mon livre et je comprends mieux votre travail et le but recherché ( voire demandé ;-D ) et je me sens sur le sable du temps dans un destin un peu dirigé.
Mon ange gardien a mes côtés , et le soutien de Marie qui de temps en temps me permet de mettre ma tête sur son épaule me guide sur l’espérance ; mais je pense qu’il me manque une information ( je pense qu’elle émanera de vous ??! dans une rencontre ) pour orienter mon chemin vers eux pour mieux servir ce chemin de Lumière.
