Peace

by Paulo Coelho on April 27, 2009

What is really the meaning of the word peace?

Sometimes people dont understand why I use the term Warrior of Light since Im engaged in a kind of confrontation with life. I do this because I believe that Nature is also in a state of confrontation: springtime against winter, winter against summer, lions against zebras, etc.

For me peace is an utopia as far as Nature is concerned.

That said we need to strive for peace among ourselves but we also need to keep in mind that absolute peace is an utopia despite the many attempts of peace in the world. Consequently this state of peace may lead to boredom.

In the light of this: Do you really want peace in the world? Have you ever considered that there was never peace in the world and that therefore this goal may simply be unattainable?

I think peace is just a moment in time. We live in a world where the only constant thing is change. Therefore, world peace today does not mean world peace yesterday and tomorrow. Although we could always try our best to fix things among ourselves, war is an inevitable force. Think about it, although today is peaceful time, world peace as we know today also has its other side. Nations spend for military and nuclear weapons. The stronger your military is, the more powerful you are, just look at US. But US is not the only powerful nation, there are others. China is a rising superpower, and a threat to US. There are also the Soviet Union, etc. But they cannot just boss around because we live in a world where we are all economically dependent on each other, where we all watch each other’s actions, and we all judge each other based on those actions. So what happened is that we cannot attack each other because we are surrounded by threats everywhere, which resulted to peace. It’s interesting to see how threat has created a regulating effect, which meant there really has never been 100% peace in this world. For some strange reason, threat works, and we are all still alive. War or peace, it’s just a matter of balance of power. Peace co-exists with threat.

I don’t want peace.
I want more harmony.
Harmony is being in tune with others and Mother Nature.
Harmony is playing our own music in the whole orchestra without disturbing the symphony, but being an active part of it.
But Nature those times does not look like a beautiful symphony any longer. Because of mankind.
So for me, the people living very far from nature can die.
The quicker the better.

War is a natural occurrence, just as the smell of the flower..In Balkans for example we have a war every 50 years or so..Wars displays the worst and best of humanity..However, a lesson to learn is that a protagonist in one war, becomes antagonist in the next..

War is a raw material.Part of nature.
It is a personal challenge.I have met some people in the raw a few times. It is quite frightening. It gives you a sense of not belonging. It churns you inside your stomach. It shakes your whole foundation. It ‘s like being in a cage with the lions with no escape. until one day, you just break the link.Voila.

Dear Sir Angel,

Peace is within oneself!!I believe…when you take good care of the near and dear ones around you…By understanding that “Nobody can be the you”,So…by embracing differences.

To respect other’s views…though i cannot always agree with others!!After some time,i convince myself with the fact that “Perspective of People differs”…So understand the situation…Listen to your heart…cos you told me to!!I did….I’m still…& So I’m the happiest cos i felt the difference!!Thank you for inspiring me…I owe you loads:)

We have children (in development) and this is our problem. In this world between heaven and earth will always occur opposing forces. If people one and all were wise and lived a soul, a spiritual idea, and would know more than it would have been not our world .. and closer to the sky … to the sun, high vibration. The world unfortunately a utopia, what prevents us to be closer to God, to the spirit world. Our world is the boundary of the dead and the living.

i think as long as the materialistic world lives in our minds, hearts and believes, this view will remain right. But, thinking deeply about our pure mission/being in this universe, will droop this view out. thus, peace will always remain a characteristic of our non-savage nature… peace turns us to our real state… one should have a look at the inferno we are living in to avow that peace is much more needed than ever before…thanks Mr P.Coelho for raising the debate :)

Peace happens when humility resides in our hearts. That we do not claim for power or dominion over others. Peace could also be a result of forgiveness coupled with love. The world may continue with the war and all, countries fighting over something they think is right or something that is OF THEIR RIGHTS. The sad thing about is they trick young, naive men in need of jobs and security ~ give them the best compensation and benefits to join an army. Thousands of men sent to war fighting for one nation’s greed. Then those soldiers come back as completely different persons – traumatized and whose views in life will never be the same again. And for me, peace seems to be a place they forgot and could never go back to. I pray not just for World Peace. But I pray that those soldiers who ask for absolution ~ that they may find peace in themselves soon.

i think peace as in world peace will never happen., though i wish it would. I know it utopia is just a “theory” we all know that devil is here and has great powers to prevent that from happening because evil does not work alone, Man helps alot. But every individual can experience inner peace from within, if you believe enough if you just contemplate this great universe and its greater god. When every person achieves this wonderful feeling of peace, life becomes smoother easier and simply peacefull.
To all whos reading this i send you my love. (added by Mobile using Mippin)

Peace doesn’t mean boredom at all. For me, peace represents that feeling of security you have inside your heart, even if in the exterior there are all sorts of changes going on.
Peace is not an idea, but a feeling. You cannot rationalize it, but feel it. Absolute peace comes from the light of the Spirit. When you identify yourself with the divine spark, with the eternal light which never changes its core, but only takes different forms, world peace is not an utopia. Nothing is unattainable unless you want to think it that way. I am convinced that the divine energy which created this world left the possibility for all of us to experiment and understand the true meaning of life but those who don’t love and only rationalize everything cannot be peaceful. Feeling love exploding into all your cells means peace too, that feeling of being a tiny particle of cosmic energy united in the universal dance of manifesting God’s creation. Peace is not brought by anything from the exterior but it’s a becoming of the interior, a realization of who we really are: the Spirit, not different roles we assume in one life or another.
There are many violent manifestations in nature, it’s true, it is real life but this doesn’t mean that Mother Nature cannot be peaceful. I feel Mother Nature so loving, so beautiful, vibrant, powerful and yet peaceful. It is self-sufficient and that gives its sensation of peace.

Have a wonderful week full of love, light and peace! :o)

I agree with Savita Vega April 27, 2009 at 2:03 pm. I like to add that the laws of micro-Physics(Quantum Physics) are different from the laws of the Macro-Physics. Hence the scope for peace of the individual at inner level will not contradict the absence of similar scope for peace at nation/world level. Also the peace attained at individual level will NOT BE STATIC but dynamic and complex and hence will not lead to boring. In fact that dynamic and complex peace will involve a warrior within that individual. I think in that way Paulo Coelho is a warrior , who also try to influence others to become warrior like him to experience the inner peace.

do i want world peace? yes, absolutely. but i want peace without boredom.
the meaning of world peace? it is difficult to answer.
it might not be an answer but i would just say it is a good cycle versus bad cycle like conflict and war.

Paulo,

When I think of Utopia, I think of perfection, including a world full of perfect and complete peace. Is this possible? Yes. But is it probable, that every human in the world could, and would, unite to create a world of peace? Unfortunately, probably not.

I agree that there are two sides of things…without some form of conflict, we would not know what peace is. But I feel troubled when I consider the depth of conflict and destruction in our world. Such cruel deaths, tyrants, and wars exist at the hands of man. In such cases we wish for peace. I think every person is confronted with various personal conflicts or problems they must overcome and learn from. I think the desire for peace among these personal conflicts helps us through our problems as individuals. But when the larger forces of politics and nations inflict such pain on others, that is when I become troubled and wish the most for peace.

If there is a pendulum that swings between the two sides of peace and conflict, and it swings so far to the side of conflict that thousands and millions of people suffer needlessly, I desperately wish for it to swing the same distance in the opposite direction. But, I think it best that this pendulum remain balanced in the middle.

Paz … e amor !

Peace in the physical world is a must, always there. That means we as human beings need to be fair to one another, west vs east, developed vs developing vs under developed, black vs white etc., as all our actions manifests into situations we have to deal with. We are designed to function as societies, however small ( village) or large (global) in a peaceful manner. Change is part of life and dealing with change is very much part of human survival. That doesn’t mean that we are not peaceful.

The experience that I have had so far with the political side of my country when living abroad has been the absence of communication.

The only correspondence I have received from the French government in 38 years was in time of election or when my passport expired. A two pages letter was sent to me once in a blue moon.By that time I had made my decision – not to vote – (Voting is not compulsory in France).
I think I received a letter asking me if I wanted to participate or not in the elections and I replied “No”
Since then, I have reviewed my position. Even my little vote can make a difference.
I believe more and more that the experience you have abroad can serve your country immensely.
First of all, when you live abroad, you suddenly find yourself a “foreigner” in a different land. Things that you took for granted in your own country do not apply there.
You have to learn the language for a start and that is of so much benefit to you. It stretches your mind and enriches your vocabulary.
That is one of the reasons why teaching foreign languages from an earlier age is so important. You have a common goal , you understand each other better, there is no walls in front of you.

Recently, I read an article on the newspaper that President Nicolas Sarkozy of France wants to use the experiences of his citizens abroad. I welcome this with open-arms.
When you live abroad, you observe the way people live and behave – there are things that you like, others you don’t – It is human. The experiences you acquire make you change your mind about different aspects of your life.
You are witnessing a change in your make-up(your DNA). You are more open-minded.(even sometimes you dont’ want to admit it – when you are in a bad mood only).:)
As you go along, you are making progress, in my case my progress have been very very slow.
As I ponder about all the years gone and wasted, arguing about the same things over and over, my conscience is telling me that there is a better way to approach this. I want my children and my grand children to benefit from my mistakes and choices.
I believe this can be done through education. Education at an earlier age.
I see a way of approaching this problem is by collaborating with other countries and see what is being done there and take the best from it so that your own country and its citizens continue to learn and grow and prosper.

Dear Paulo,
Is not it a part of peace to inform of what is happening and to be aware of it?
For me, a Warrior of the Light is like a social Entrepreneur – someone who has done their sums – additions and subtractions; in other words is aware of his weaknesses and his strengths.
He has learned to take the blows, still keeps going for an “encore” because he knows deep down through his research that what he wants to do will benefit the community at large.
A warrior of the Light is a person who is prepared to put his neck out.
Who, through their experiences and the experiences of others is able to compare. He does not believe anything until it makes sense to him.
He checks and re-checks and when he is satisfied, he goes for it.
He is committed to his vision.
In my opinion, any one who is seeking the Light is capable to make his dream comes true.He just has to believe.
The day he realises he is on equal term with everyone, he then knows that is soul is talking to him.

As you said, Paulo
“We have to remember that we do not possess our creations. They do not belong to us, True creativity arrives from an Union with the Divine with the mystical and the unknowable. This is both a joy for the Creator and a blessing to others.”

To me peace is the thing that I am most interested – personal peace and world peace. It we are going to survive on this planet we can no longer waste our resources on making war. The destruction of countries and peoples homes is too costly! I am surprised that anyone could think of peace in terms of “boring”. The big lesson ahead for man to learn is that we really are our brother’s keeper.
When we hurt others we are really hurting ourselves. Our core self is the same as every other person’s core self(the Soul, essence or animating force that gives us life).

I am disappointed in the number of people who think Peace or anything else for that matter, is unattainable and impossible…

What ever happened to following our dreams, believing in the impossible?

To Dream, The Impossible Dream… To Fight, The Unbeatable Foe… To Bear, With Unbearable Sorrow….

Mr. Coelho is proof of this himself. His dream, to become a writer, what only seemed an impossibility for so many years, one day became his reality!

Hi again… this is getting interesting. :)

I´ve thougt about this for quite a bit but it only made me less sertain of my wiew on the matter.
But there is a song lyric from a swedish band Imperiet (meaning “the Empire”, i’m swedish myself) that i didt really get, or actually disapproved of, until i saw the bush war in Iraq..

It goes something like this (my translation):

Is it really peace that we want?
To every concidrable price?
Are we completely sure about that?
That the worst thing of all is war?

With law the country will be built anew,
and the law demands peace.
So that those whos given power and gold,
will gain even more.

[...]

With peace comes silence,
and all will be put to order.
And people and contries will be split apart,
in the name of unanimity.

No real answer… but who can have one universal answer to this question?

On the other hand… why shouldnt you aim for the unobtainable, just because it unobtainable?

And the great dragon was thrown down, that ancient serpent, who is called the Devil and Satan, the deceiver of the whole world – he was thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him..” (revelation-12:7-12 ).
Peace is a state we all want to reach, but perhaps we are striving so much because deep down,at another level of our consciousness we are well aware that we cannot achieve it.

‘Peace’ is really the meaning of my name.
In Korean it sounds ‘pyeong-hwa’. (Also you can write ‘평화’ in Korean. – from ‘平和’ in chinese letter) It`s very unusual name in my country. but more unusually, I`ve met already two girls who got utterly same name. Sad to say, one of them loved me.

From now on, you know my name(& her name). So the word peace has new meaning to you.

As a graduate student in the biological sciences, I can attest that Mr. Coelho’s views on Nature are certainly profound. Nevertheless, there are a few points that I would like to bring up:
1. Often, in religion especially, humans are referred to as separate from nature. Of-course, we are not, but we ARE distinct. We have huge brains, an upright gait, etc. So, even if it is in our genes, for example, to walk on all fours, we do not. Based on this, I can say that we are part of nature, but maybe we can use what nature has given us to create a better future for ourselves and our earth.

2. I agree that peace is a utopia. It is an unstable equilibrium that is unattainable. Peace, as an outcome, needs to be redefined towards a version that embraces the inherent dynamics of life.

My best,
Anna

Sorry by the way, I watched the video about forgiveness and forgetting, I commented on that and it came into a wrond section.

But about peace, I do think that people are evolving. Nature is doing the physical evolving for us, although human is trying to slow it down by inventing all kinds of medicine and stuff like that, that’s against natures true will. But we’re humans, that’s what we do, we try to preserve life.

The problem now-a-days is that humans have build up a system, that is no longer controlled by humans, but large corporations, gun manufacturers and politicians. I don’t know to laugh or cry when I think about this.. Only humans could build up a civilization that puts some invisible companies above the price of human life (witch is priceless).

But I do believe, that we’re in a turning point here. 1900-2000 has been a time of war, maybe if will continue 50 or hundred years. it propably will.

But evolution, if we talk about individuals and spirituality, is growing. Or atleast that’s what I think and want to believe. People these days have much of the neseties of life that we didn’t have before. Before, western people didn’t have the time to think about spiritual things so much, because just staying alive was hard enough. Now, there are lots of people who are putting effort on to how to grow spiritually. And for one person who gets on higher level of consciousness, he affects lots of more people to follow his route then “the average joe”. People want to be good, and do good inside. Most of us have just been let down so many times that our heart has died, in many ways. Many of the people who watch lots of television and listen to the mainstream media, like it’s the word of god, are thought not to think with their own brains in the process. They just accept is as a fact that nothing can be done, and just sit at home, doing things that don’t really matter and don’t make people happy in the long run.

Also, I feel that organized religion has done many bad things to people. I mean the kind of religion that judges all other religions, tells their people that GOD is coming to fix everything, just sit and relax, read the bible, go to church and you don’t need to do anything. And most “believers” do just that.

Jesus didn’t tell us to build fancy churches. Nor did the other prophets. They had pretty much the same message. Develope yourself and do good to other people. Do the things that you would want people to do for yourself.

Many younger people I see in my country, I think, are beginning to realize the importance of self developement, and the fact that they don’t need church to do that, because god is inside everyone. Jesus actually told us not to make “images of god to worship”, and that’s just what most of the religions are doing.

Buddha statues, that many people bow to, jesus on a cross and so on. That leads to the fact that they’re missing the point and are worshipping the messanger instead of doing what he teached us to do.

Things can go the other way too, but this is my view, and this is what I hope that things can evolve in this direction, before corporations and goverments pollute this place to the point of no return. If that happens, there’s two ways out. Either human is going to have to be pushed so far that we are so miserable that we all realize that something has to be done, and maybe we can fix it.

the other way is that “god”, “mother nature”, “universe”, what ever you wish to call it, WILL balance things. It might wipe away most of the human race during the process if things go too far.

I hope this doesn’t happen, but I must say, that things are not looking too bright. Because of corporations running the world, there’s lots of talk about things to be done, but we can’t really do much because THEY are the ones in control.

Maybe, if I’m lucky, I’ll see witch way the events will start to turn in this world in my lifetime.. I just hope that people could somehow take world back to the people.

Quoting Kungfutse: Wise men thinks and acts on what is right while ignorant thinks how he can make more money.

Unfortunately it’s the latter these days, and it will be, as long as corporations are put above humans, and are basicly above the law in everything.
