The hundredth name (Sufi tradition)

Paulo Coelho

A student asked his Sufi master to reveal God’s fifth name.

“Whoever knows that name is capable of changing History,” he answered. The master asked him to spend the whole day at the gates of the city.

The boy returned the following day.

“What did you see?” asked the master.

“An old man tried to enter the city to sell a sheep. The guard wanted to tax him but the man had no money. So the guard stole his sheep and chased him off. I thought: if I only knew God’s hidden name I could change this situation.”

“You could have prevented this injustice, but you preferred to stand there dreaming of a revelation. Such stupidity! Well, then, I shall tell you God’s fifth name: act on behalf of others. That’s the only way we can change History.”

Collective Worship

The sun is shining and there is light everywhere. As you know the sun was one of the main objects of adoration in humankind – which means that we have to have collective rituals.

That’s I think religion can play a very important role since people are sharing the same respect for the same mysteries. Yet, spiritually, you can’t transfer your path to someone else.

So, I would like to know: Are you engaged in some kind of collective worship?

I’m not talking about religion: I’m actually talking about dance, sports, basically everything that we can do together and that at the end of the day we feel we are part of the same movement. So I would like to hear your opinion on that and hear of your collective worships – outside of religion if possible.

Association of the Week : The Eye

The eye is always associated in traditional cultures with light and spiritual perceptions. According to ancient beliefs, the eye was not a passive receiver of light, but rather a source of light.

It is believed that such was the power of the eye that certain creatures would have magical powers in their eyes. It is the case of Medusa in Greek mythology that would petrify anyone that would look at her. In Ancient Ireland, Balor, the king of Fomorians,, would use in the battlefields his bad eye against his enemies. This belief in the bad eye gave rise in many cultures, especially Mediterranean ones, to many amulets supposed to protect people.

The positive connotation of the eye is nevertheless wider and thus the eye is associated with knowledge and by extension with the power of foresight. But the access to this type of vision – that goes beyond the mere appearance of things – is usually achieved by the sacrifice of this very organ. The wise man Tiresias, Apollo’s priest, was blind. The Scandinavian God Odin also gives one of his eyes to the Giant Mimir for knowledge. In Christianity the All Seeing Eye of God is represented inside the sun of a pyramid – which means that God sees all everywhere and always.

Now you take the floor: what do you associate with the eye?

Paul on the Road from Cacabelos

Manuel from Cacabelos

I headed out early the next morning for Ponferrada only to have somehow lost the signs, finding myself 2,5 kms beyond ;-( This was due to Scottish Doctor David who having filled himself with pain killers, raced off into the sunrise, uttering “I’ve got to get to Santiago”… :-) I wonder how much of the path he’ll remember…;-)?

I decided to go back and it was well worth it, to see the beautiful old town with its Templar Castle. A quick coffee con leche and I was on my way, alone to Cacabelos. There I stayed once more in an hotel because the Alberge was closed. The place was full to the brim with families celebrating Mothers Day & the Bierzo Wine festival. Manuel, my waiter at dinner, told me the story of how he had to first travel to Switzerland, in order to meet his wife, who was also Spanish, coming from nearby… So near and yet so far…

Up early this morning I have now reached Trabadelo and will spend the night to gather energy for the famous O Cebreiro tomorrow.
Till soon…
Love, Paul
