The eye is always associated in traditional cultures with light and spiritual perceptions. According to ancient beliefs, the eye was not a passive receiver of light, but rather a source of light.
It is believed that such was the power of the eye that certain creatures would have magical powers in their eyes. It is the case of Medusa in Greek mythology that would petrify anyone that would look at her. In Ancient Ireland, Balor, the king of Fomorians,, would use in the battlefields his bad eye against his enemies. This belief in the bad eye gave rise in many cultures, especially Mediterranean ones, to many amulets supposed to protect people.
The positive connotation of the eye is nevertheless wider and thus the eye is associated with knowledge and by extension with the power of foresight. But the access to this type of vision – that goes beyond the mere appearance of things – is usually achieved by the sacrifice of this very organ. The wise man Tiresias, Apollo’s priest, was blind. The Scandinavian God Odin also gives one of his eyes to the Giant Mimir for knowledge. In Christianity the All Seeing Eye of God is represented inside the sun of a pyramid – which means that God sees all everywhere and always.
Now you take the floor: what do you associate with the eye?

Maybe the eye is not the mirror of the soul
but the door
to the invisible part of it.
And the only true door
Your soul uses
finding its soulmate
The eyes speak without words
and don´t lie.
The eyes! The visual contact to our and others souls, which can not hide noone.because the soul is naked!

cher Maitre,

Hi Toots,
As I read this morning in the dictionnary : “eyes only” means top secret (ultra- confidentiel).
thanks
Eyes also reminds me of the vision i had seen.I touched a little girl with a mother, with my hand on her eyes and told her to follow the light she sees with her blind eyes, and told her not to stop and when i removed my hand, she ran to an empty space. She had seen the soul of her dead father, who was in the army and had died. She ran and hugged him and they both cried,,for everyone she was hugging an empty space but for them and me,i could see father and daughter.I thought i had opened her physical eyes but her inner eyes were opened too.She gave me a single flower which was in her hand. And then next time as i walking by i saw a small boy passing by me and when he accidenttally touched my cloth he also screamed i can see.
Maybe these things are for future,i don;t know what it means or what it signifies but when i went to the hospital next day,i saw little boy wearing a thick glasses and his eye has patch on it.I was listeting to a doctor talking to us,but i saw that boy staring at me,i dunno what got into me,i just walked away from the conversation from the doctor,w/c might have looked rude to him and others ,coz i wanted to touch that little boy .I just went near him and placed my hand on his head, smiled at him and ran to a toilet before his family asked me what i was doing.
I was just taking chance thats all.I dunno and who knows what i was doing??
My physical eyes are weak, and need glasses all the time, but my inner eyes are sharper, enough to recognize people,i mean much faster than normal people do,w/c explains the eccentric nature of mine,w/c i can’t explain to them. The latter one became sharper when i started looking at things from it all the time.Latter eyes are blunt, takes no nonsense, lets you know things w/c is exacly what they are.
And surprisingly the eye colors of the former started changing from brown to grey to blue to green to hazel, dunno why and how the moment i started opening my inner eyes.
We may open our physical eyes the moment we are born but some of us are not aware of our inner eyes ,until we reach old age or not know at all.Funny things some say my eyes are so big and get scared some says big and beautiful hhahah ya i mean bug eyes.
In association with eyes I find a ocean
One more thing… You know the Alchymist, the part where this boy meets the girl by the well and looks her into the eyes… Well, lets just say I experienced that one time. It was a very stormy day by the pirate bay when eyes met, and the connection was shocking…
I wear a bracelet on both wrists. They were given to me a few months ago by a woman who were in the last stage of cancer. She lives in Turkey – yet she wanted to give me these bracelets for protection against envy. The bracelets have “eyes” all around to protect me against the evil eye. I have worn these bracelets since I received them. I don’t know where her concern came from, but she was very determined that I should have the bracelets and wear them. I found this very touching, and wear them all the time.
Another association is the third eye in the forehead. I can feel this “eye” every once in a while when I am “connected” to people with brain tumors. This “eye” is similar to the energy center in the palm of the hands, and it is about 3 cm in diameter. I usually feel a column of enegy from this third eye into the brain when healing takes place.
The third association is God’s eye. So often we are prepared to pass judgement over other people and how they act. But there is so much that we don’t know about people we meet, why they have become who they are and why they act as they do. So in the end we need God to pass the final judgement. Only God has the “see all” eye that is necessary to give a fair judgement.
I read that the bigger the good you are trying to do, the bigger the demons that are trying to stop you. What does the all seeing EYE have to say about that?
The eyes are the windows to the soul. Yet at the same time, I think the mouth is also the portal to the soul. Life and death in the power of the tongue.
Have you ever made eye contact with a stranger and then notice the smile, or a nod of the head without a single word being spoken? The power of one look, one glance, a stare along with a smile… its priceless.
Querido Mestre,
primeira associação: teus olhos, que são os mais iluminados que ja vi na vida. O olhar de Cristina no dia da festa, que é muito expressivo e muito iluminado. Luz. Verdade. Olhos nos olhos. Clareza. Profundeza. Alma. Imensidão.
Meu amor, meu respeito e minha gratidão.

Now it would be a bit silly if “Eye!” didn’t reply to this one, wouldn’t it! :) ..
The Eye.. good question; where to start…this is what ‘my third eye’ tells me:
The eye reads,
The eye speaks..
The eye can lie
but never disguise
as only the eye can tell
if one is evil
The eye can oversee,
The eye can close
it’s up to eye! to choose
Dear Savita Vega,
Thank you for your post about dogs. Whole my life I was “cat – lover” but lately, beside 5 cats I have two dogs ( one is big riesen schnauzer ) and I by instict comand it just as you described in your post. More than that, I learned lot from your words.
I am one who use eye-contact constantly with everyone every day. It is way how I live it comes from my openess towards people and world.
I use it sometimes, but rarely, as you said, as an answer in hurtful situation and just because “eyes are mirror of the soul” its power is so strong.
Expresive eyes, if not hidden behind veil are something extraordinary ! Yes, we can learn from dogs too ! From their eyes you can read each and every emotion.
We humans are cowards, we hide, be it because of education, mentality, customs, politeness….
The answers I surch in the eyes of my love.

Eyes help me in establishing contact with the other soul that may be my soulmate.
It is said that when a soul departs from the human body at the hour of death, it usually does from the eye. The agony the soul faces before leaving the troubled body will be evident from the eyes.
Eyes reveal the person’s mental state during his/her life.
Eyes are another powerful medium of communication that doesn’t hide anything and when two people are engaged in this communication, they are usually honest.
c’est la raison pour laquelle on dit :
“Loin des yeux, loin du coeur”
Makes sense to me.
1.Genesis 3:5
“For God knows that when you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
Genesis 3:4-6 (in Context) Genesis 3 (Whole Chapter)
2.Genesis 3:7
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves together and made coverings for themselves.
Genesis 3:6-8 (in Context) Genesis 3 (Whole Chapter)
3.Genesis 6:8
But Noah found favor in the eyes of the LORD.
etc etc http://www.biblegateway.com/quicksearch/?quicksearch=eyes&qs_version=31 (concordance in the Bible on “eyes” )
Edgar Alla Poe wrote a novel whoose title was “The tell tale heart”.
It is about a murder, committed by a man because another man had a “bad eye”.
So there was a double meaning in English between the word “eye” and the word “I” (Me).
I found interesting that a double meaning could associate two differnt things.
In Italy we say that “the eye is the mirror of soul”.
So maybe there is also in other cultures the association between these two words.
Jung said that the Big Consciousness of the World never stops, and roam free in our world.
I agree with him.
paulo eu associo os olhos com o estado de espirito de cada um.
Thank you maestro for this very beautiful blog
The eye, it says so much to look to the soul, to look see, the mirror to the soul. I believe this it has power too i wear the evil eye. It remind me of this movie Eyes wide shut.

Savita Vega,
Hi blog fellow! Yes, cultural knowledge is so important when meeting new people. However, I would of course always ask any parents first, never ‘grab’ a baby, without the parents blessed permission. As a mother yourself, you know how most parents are very protective of a new born, and normally they don’t appreciate a ‘stranger’ holding the baby. What I have learned is, South Americans are very social people, and do not keep physical distant as many of us westerns. So, they love when you want to hold their baby. However, working for a program protecting against child abuse, our goal is always to encourage the parents themselves to hold their own babies, and to encourage the parents to bond and attach with their new born. So, normally, (me absolutely adoring and being in love with babies), I normally hold myself back, and praise the parents for how well they themselves interact with their new born. I believe this belief in the Evil Eye, has to do with the first time somebody meets the new baby…I’m not sure. In fact often, Hispanics stay at home in their houses, for weeks to protect their new born from being exposed to any Evil Eye. Very different from some young American mothers, who take new born shopping at Wal Mart when they are a week old!
And, your thoughts about how dogs communicate with the eyes and how we can interact with dogs, is very interesting. Sometimes Friday nights i watch ‘The Dog Whisperer’. I love Cesar Milan, and how extraordinarily well he deal with any dog owner-dog issues.
Several things I associate with the Eye, but foremost is communication – primal and pure. One example of this is the establishment of dominance and control. This is the way that I use my eyes on a daily basis – not with other humans, of course, but with my dogs. Most of these are large, some weighing in at over half my body weight. How do you physically control a 75 – 80 pound dog? The answer is: you don’t. You have to control them in the same way that they and their near relatives, wolves, control one another in the absence of humans – with the eyes. Yes, dogs and wolves do fight, but essentially they are pack animals, and it is not conducive to their survival and thus not natural for one member of a pack to kill another member of that same pack. What they do, rather, is vie for dominance and establish and maintain that dominance with eye contact.
What happens is that one animal will knock another down and once the losing dog is on its back, the dominant animal will stand over it and stare into its eyes until it looks away. The moment that the downed dog breaks eye contact, it has lost – it has submitted to the dominance of the other and it is unlikely that there will be a further challenge. From this point on, the dominant dog controls the other merely by staring it down – by the use of the eyes, even from a distance. If the submissive dog does something wrong, the dominant dog will glare at it, even from several feet away, and the submissive dog will roll over on its back, or at the very least, turn its head, tuck its tail and quietly move away.
It works the same between dogs and humans. In a pack, someone is going to be the Alpha – the one in charge – and it better be you. The way that I establish and maintain this position with my dogs is simple. If they come to me when they are puppies, I hold them on their back a lot from the time that they are very small, either in my arms, or by placing them on their back on the floor and gently putting one hand on their chest, holding it there until they submit and stop struggling to get up. At the same time, I look into their eyes until they break eye-contact. In this way, from the time that they are very small, they learn that I am in control, and even as they grow, this sense of submissiveness holds. With adult dogs, when they do something wrong – if they try to fight amongst themselves or if one dog tries to take another dog’s food, for example – I knock the dog off its feet, actually reaching down and pulling its feet out from under it (like throwing a steer) if necessary, then I place my foot upon the dogs chest, with just enough weight to keep it from getting up, then I glare into its eyes threateningly. Sometimes, I even “growl” while doing this. When the dog shows sufficient remorse, by breaking eye contact and looking away, I let it get up. But even then, I will often follow it, in an almost stalking sort of manner, still glaring, until it shuffles away and lies down or hides somewhere. Again, this is all without physically hurting the dog at all. The only thing that is damaged is the dog’s sense of dominance. Once the dogs are trained in this way – once they recognize who is in charge and submit, they are easy to control, simply through eye-contact. Some dogs, of course, are easier than others, but most will respond to a look, even from across the room. If I just turn my head quickly and glare into their eyes, or, if necessary, stand up or stand over them and do this, they will stop what they are doing immediately and usually look very guilty and remorseful, either staring at the floor, averting their eyes, or sometimes even rolling over on their back, as though to say: “I give up – you’re right, I’m wrong. I won’t do it again.” The technique is very effective and does not require spanking or hurting the dog in any way.
It is also useful to note that it is with these same eyes that I communicate other emotions. When a dog is injured or in pain, I will look deeply into their eyes as a manner of showing empathy and giving reassurance that everything is going to be okay. When there is thunder or some noise outside, I single glance can communicate the fact that there is no real threat and that everyone can relax. When a stranger appears, I introduce my dogs to them with a combination of body language and looks which indicate that this person is not a threat to me or to them. Likewise, from across the room, I may stare into my dog’s eyes and hold his gaze for a moment in complete silence, as a way letting him know that he is deeply loved.
When I consider this and see it in action on a daily basis, it makes me realize just how much power the eyes have. If I can control seven or eight large dogs at one time – any one of which could easily overpower me in a physical fight – merely by the use of my eyes, then I have to conclude that the eyes have more power than mere brute physical force. And I do not believe that it is very different with humans. I think that we simply do not use our eyes in this way because in society we have unspoken rules of propriety that designate how we can and cannot use our eyes in communication with one another. Even if someone offends us, offends us deeply, we are likely to maintain a wholly non-threatening body posture, which includes keeping our eyes to ourselves. We use our words much more often than we use our eyes, even when words are far less effective than a mere look. Imagine this, for example: Someone insults you openly, perhaps even in front of others. Are you more likely to ignore it completely, say something back, or to glare at that person in silence, staring them straight in the eyes? If we ignore it, they are likely to do it again – after all, we have let them get away with it once already. If we say something back, often times we have merely added fuel to the fire, we have given the person yet another weapon to use against us – our own words, which they will twist and turn against us. But what if we say nothing, do nothing, but simply glare at that person in silence – glare openly for all to see? The thought of such is almost inconceivable – it makes the heart pound just to think of it. Why? Because it is so “improper.” It is something that we simply do not do in “polite society.” It is okay to plot revenge in the silence of one’s heart. It is perhaps okay even to spout an insult in return. It is certainly okay to call that person to account for their wrong by confronting them with words. And yet, to simply glare at that person in complete silence, to glare until silence falls all around – to make them know that they have done wrong and to make it evident to everyone looking on that you have taken notice of that wrong – this somehow is highly impolite and totally improper.
I sometimes wonder what it was like to be human before the rules and norms of society took hold and prevailed above all our instincts – what was it like to be alive when we were still at liberty to use our eyes freely, as came naturally to us? Even before there was spoken language – even before we agreed that a certain type of grunt meant “yes” while another indicated “no” – there was the language of the eyes, which said everything. Even now, the eyes can communicate so very much, and yet this is a language that we use, comparatively, so little. For example, if we see a person to whom we are greatly attracted, a stranger, we might like to stare at that person amorously, so as to let them know how we feel. But often we do not even do this, because we are guarded – we are fearful of how that look might be interpreted and what it might lead to, something beyond our control. And, on top of this, what if someone else, some by-stander happens to see us looking in this way? What might they think of us? How will we look in the all-seeing public eye? So, instead, we avert our eyes. We look at the object of our affection, but only out of the corner of our eyes, when we are sure that no one else is looking. In essence, the communication that we make with our eyes is so guarded, so controlled in every way by the unspoken norms we absorb into our subconscious. But what would happen if we stopped averting our eyes? What would happen if we looked even into the eyes of strangers – looked openly? How much time do we spend every day subconsciously averting our eyes to avoid making eye-contact with other human beings? And what would happen if we stopped doing this? What would happen if we just looked – not threateningly, not even invitingly, but just openly, expecting nothing, either good or bad – just looked at one another straight in the eyes, even people we’ve never met, even strangers? Would the world fall apart? Or would we suddenly feel free at last – at home once again inside of our own skin?
Often times, the norms which establish social propriety act as a veil that guards us from danger. But that same veil is also a cloak that we wear which keeps us from experience. To remove that cloak, to use the eyes to communicate freely and openly, is a risk. Yet, to step over that boundary and encounter risk is to step into a realm that is ripe with possibilities. Who knows who you might encounter when two pairs of eyes are free to meet and linger! That man sitting across from you on the subway might be your very best friend in the next decade of your life. That woman in the elevator might be your Soul Mate. But you will never know if you do not open your eyes – quite literally open your eyes – to the possibilities all around you.
Dear Heart,
I will have to keep this in mind, as I have never been overly affectionate toward babies, or children – not the sort to want to pick them up and hold them, except my own, of course (that biological “motherly instinct” kicking in, I suppose). I am always the one to say, “Oh, what a cute baby,” to be polite, but never pick it up unless it is virtually thrust into my arms. Maybe I should be more attentive to this, as I wouldn’t want anyone to think I am giving their child the “evil eye.”
Thanks!
Savita
Visiting Hispanic families with a new born, I make sure to caress or hold the young baby, to avoid the parents from believing the baby get looked at with an Evil Eye (my understanding is this happens if someone approach a baby, and talks about how cute the baby is so on, without physically touching the baby). The magical cure for babies ‘cursed’ with an Evil Eye, is to put a glass with an egg in it, under the baby’s bed, and if the egg turn to a certain color, the curse is gone.
EYE is a well of wisdom
The soul does not see what eyes see (sometimes I feel things without seeing them with my eyes)
-> Sometimes my soul feels, what I call, the energy of the love and also the other feelings of soul of another person (what allows me to feel(smell) that a person arrives home, before she knocks at the door; to know that somebody is well or badly in hundreds of kilometres of me etc. etc.: it is so!)
In the eyes of the other one, I see the mirror of his soul; and sometimes I see myself (because the other one can see me, can see what I do not see of me)
-> Often, when I was small, I said ” why the eyes do not say the same thing as its mouth ” (I did not understand then, because my words were in agreement with my thought and my heart)
For me, the eye represents the truth. They say in Estonia that whatever a person feels or thinks, You will see it from their eyes. You will find the truth out from their eyes, because no matter how good that person is at bending the truth, lying, manipulating or maybe just hiding, it will be revealed in their eyes (the truth).
The eyes can have many looks in them, depending on our emotions, the things we’ve gone through, our outlook to life… but the truth will come out in everyone, if You look in their eyes.
Although – You have to pay attention to the eyes, to recieve the true answer coming out of them. You have to observe them.
~*~*~*~
Eyes, being open, glistening or shining, can have one meaning. Being open to life, having passion for life, if they’re glistening. Seizing oportunities, being true to our life. Doing what we love, doing what is our “destiny”.
Closed eyes can have another meaning – being closed to life. Being closed to opportunities. Just like the door is closed, eyes can be closed. Voulenteerly, or by force (for example if we die). Closed eyes can also mean denying or hiding from the true or important things that we should be doing. Running away from our life.
~*~*~*~
Eyes can show love or hate. Eyes will always show something. They give out information even if we don’t want them to, sometimes. Eyes are the fountain of truth.

for me i can see in one’s person sssomuch by eye contact!!!!!
The eye if has bad negativness in itself may cast bad luck, we say thet bad eye not once has put youngesers to early grave.
So we tend to wear or hang a blue eye to ward off any bad eye spells!
May be we (Libyans) inherited this notion from remote echos of what the Midusa did a long time ago. even though if you leaf deep in history you will discover that the unfortunate Midusa was an old great Libyan Godess -the Greek when coming to Libya- displaced & disgraced porpusely in order to replace her with their Godess Athena.
The victorious always write the history!!
The eye is more than this mythical effect, it is the soul guidance, throgh it as a midum our soul tend to live its illusion of this life!!
God knows better!
Keep your eyes open.

Dear all,

Eye
************************************************
What is eye? Is it a physical organ? Or,
Just a biological one of the senses,
Can we assocociate eyes with
source of light, knowledge and lessons
Or, Should we think eyes for passion?
Great Paulo asked, “what do you associate with eyes?”
Should I associate with pain? Or,
Should I associate with material gain?
Is it a perception?
Is it the mirror of reflection?
Even minds capture images through eyes,
Someone even said, “beauty lies in eyes of beholder”,
What is this eye?
Oh dear God, Oh my humble Soul
Can you let me know,
If eyes is beauty,
Should I associate with hasty?
A human Life without eyes,
Cannot see the beauty of world,
Miracles of universe,
Passionate love,neither
Pleasure to lust
What should I associate with eyes?
I am poor, humble soul
God is me and I am HIM,
Should dear eye, I associate
Should you dissociate?
My poor poem is full of question,
I am curious to find answer,
Maybe you are answer to humans,
Through your sense,
You give us perception
Love, lust, passion, devotion
All is because of you,
All is love and all is you,
Alas, I remain observer in reflection

God bless you all !
The Eye * The Mirror
I associate the eye with perception. In this way it is doorway to the soul, because with changing perceptions you can change your thoughts, words, and actions.
Eye-where biology meets mind through the Light for the Observer.
It is true that we need to become physically blind to see with our spiritual eyes.
The eye can belong to the ego or the heart and soul.
When we are children, our physical eyes see the world through our hearts. But as we get older, the eyes are more and more controlled by the ego.
Our heart and soul have to reeducate our vision, so that our eyes once again become servants of the deeper, invisible spiritual sight.
Blessings everyone,
May we see with our hearts and souls.

My mother has this sort of evil eye thing going on her whole life ,when she gets angry or negative or is talking about something or someone shes not happy with Jan :-) she gets this sqwint and this evil eye – and she becomes quiet animated as well ..Ive spent my whole life amusing my family by taking my mother off …good job she has a very good sense of humor and we all laugh about it – and they say do it again do it again …so as they say never take your eye off the ball ..Or some people say when injustice is not taking place that is should be an eye for an eye …hmmmm there are lots of eye meanings – or sayings but i think the best one of all is that song your just to good to be true , cant take my eyes off you ..love and light from the eye of the tiger – grrrrr..xx

The eyes are mirror of the soul
Oh, cant help. I say a well known phrase. The eyes are the mirror of the soul. I believe hat, because is very hard to hide feelings through gaze, but the rest of the body can easily been controlled. And, the interesting thing is the iris inside the eye, the pupil increased at the sight of the loved one, or in amazement or admiration. The same in case of small child, and thats why we like them ( one of the reasons).
Well, poor Oedip was not wiser ,and if well remember Tiresias had a bad end. But of course sight can be misleading, and we must let other senses tell us what is good, too.
