Paul on the road : from Vega de Valcarce

by Paulo Coelho on May 5, 2009

a cup of coffee in a small Pandaria in Vega de Valcarce

I took this photo this morning in a small Pandaria in Vega de Valcarce. Having drunk the cup half full, I suddenly saw the shape of a heart had formed in the milk of my coffee… A sign for my climb to O Cebreiro? Or for the path gone by and that which still remains… A sign for my life… It certainly gives me strength for the climb…
Love, Paul

“I agree with Adrian. Paul – You obviously have a penchant and natural eye for what is going on around you;” Gazza.

I agree with you Gaz and Andrian too.
Paul has a ‘natural eye’ for what is going on around him, but has the Gift of Intuition and ‘knows’ what is going on in the ..metaphysical world, too.
LOVE,
Thelma.

Dear Paul, Isn’t it wonderful to find just the sign you need/want at the perfect moment?

I hope you have many more of these perfect moments as you continue your journey.

I agree with Adrian. Paul – You obviously have a penchant and natural eye for what is going on around you; that, mixed with your extensive experience traveling and multi-lingual capabilities would suit you well for a career in the travel/travel writing business. This is also a growing field with more grey-beards coming into the market looking for something to do with their time and money (admittedly the money part is a bit less now!!)
Cheers
Gaz

Dear Paul,
Having been away to Cyprus, as you know, I wasn’t able to keep up with your blog. But I have just read all your reports from 22 April until today. What a lovely story its become. I’m sorry to hear of your bad ankles but I hope they are feeling somewhat better than they were.
You seem to be meeting some lovely people. What a world away from the business we both know! I don’t think you should ever go (come?)back to it! Perhaps you should take up writing because you tell some very good stories – seriously. Its wonderful how you are documenting this journey; I can’t imagine how you find the energy/time/means to keep us all so involved. Its very generous of you.
And do not rush your journey because you feel you have to be somewhere by a deadline; enjoy the path without so much pain – rest as needed. Glad to hear when you are doing that. You’ll be sorry its over too quickly when you get there!
Wish I could be with you and we could have some good chats too. I think you coud teach me a few things. Walking is certainly good for that. But sometimes its nice to be walking alone to take in the sights, sounds, smells, etc, eh?
So, take care, pass my best on to Vicky & KAren when you next talk to them.
Adrian

Paul, I was reading the web site and saw this question from a reader and Paulo’s response, I thought it very apropo:

How do you make peace with a negative past and with those who have wronged you?

This is indeed a very personal question and there are certainly many ways for a person to deal with this.
I think though that first you need to accept your past and try to forgive those that have wronged you. But forgiving does not mean you have forgotten.

In order to move from the past to the present you need to accept your scars. But you need to do everything in your power in order to heal them so that the ghosts of your past will no longer barge in your present life.

It is a long and difficult process I grant you – but it’s a way out of guilt and hatred in my eyes.

Hi Paul
As you know, I was only made aware of your incredible journey today. I have been catching up this morning with your adventure and I must admit a certain amount of envy that you can just pack up and go as you have done.
It appears your motivation is a genuine need to get out of the rat race and find yourself. I hope you find what you are looking for and come back refreshed and ready to take on new challenges. You have a lot going for you and – obviously from this Blog – a lot of very good friends who are encouraging you every step of the way.

I will follow this blog every day now until you reach your destination.
Good luck and love from us all
Gazza
